To move, it still needs a chassis, wheels or joints, motors, motor drivers, a power system and software that connects those parts to the handset. The strongest documented examples are a wheeled Android rover and PhoneBot, a research humanoid that uses a smartphone alongside a separate actuator computer.
That makes an old phone useful for a DIY rover, telepresence camera or robotics experiment. It does not, by itself, become a general-purpose housekeeper, security system or manipulation robot. The practical choice is between building a body around a compatible phone and buying a dedicated kit whose mechanical and electronic parts were designed together.

What an old phone contributes to a robot
A modern smartphone combines several expensive robot subsystems in one small device. PhoneBot’s authors describe a camera, inertial measurement unit (IMU), wireless connection, onboard processing and a user interface. In their platform, the phone handles perception, locomotion-policy inference, cloud-connected services and human–robot interaction, while a separate mini single-board computer sends commands to the joints. Read the technical description in the PhoneBot paper.
- Perception: The camera can provide video for person following, telepresence or visual navigation. The phone’s IMU supplies acceleration and rotation measurements that help estimate movement.
- Computing: The processor can run an Android application and, when the project supports it, machine-learning inference or navigation code.
- Connectivity: Wi-Fi, Bluetooth or cellular data can carry video, telemetry and control messages, although the project’s software determines which connection is supported.
- Interaction: The screen, microphone and speaker can provide a control panel or conversation channel. That does not make the phone an autonomous social robot; it is an interface attached to a larger machine.
- Power and mounting: The phone battery powers the handset, not necessarily the motors. A robot body normally needs its own battery and a safe way to hold and charge the phone.
The division of labor is important. Motors and actuators create force; gearboxes, wheels, legs and joints turn that force into motion; motor drivers regulate current; and a controller translates software commands into electrical signals. An old phone can send commands or calculate what should happen, but it cannot replace those physical components.

What the phone cannot do alone
There is no evidence in the documented projects that a bare handset can walk, navigate a room, clean a floor or pick up objects. Those abilities come from a complete platform with mechanical parts, power electronics, control software and safety design. A phone resting on a table is a camera and computer. Put it on a powered chassis and it can become the brain of a rover; attach it to a humanoid body and it can participate in a research robot.
Compatibility is also not universal. The sources do not establish that every old iPhone or Android handset will run every robotics app. Check the project’s supported operating system, processor, camera access, wireless APIs and physical mounting requirements before buying a body. PhoneBot reports validating its Android application on four devices, which demonstrates a limited test set rather than a guarantee for all older phones.
Documented phone-powered robots
OpenBot: the practical wheeled pattern
OpenBot is the clearest example of turning a phone into a small mobile robot. Its 2021 paper describes a small electric vehicle costing $50 for the robot body, explicitly excluding the smartphone. The Android handset acts as the robot’s brain and sensory system. Reported workloads include person following and real-time autonomous navigation in unstructured environments. Those are capabilities demonstrated by the OpenBot platform, not a promise that any arbitrary phone and chassis will perform identically.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The project’s README separates the work into a mechanical body, Arduino firmware, Android applications, a controller and programming or training options. That list tells you what “phone-powered” really means: there is still a build, embedded code and an app to configure. A generic two-wheel chassis may have incompatible motor drivers, wiring or phone dimensions, so verify those interfaces instead of assuming that every “robot car chassis kit” will work.

The $50 figure comes from the 2021 research design. It is a historical body cost, not a current retail price and not the total cost of a working robot. A complete build also needs a compatible phone, battery, electronics, structural parts and time for assembly and software setup.
PhoneBot: a research humanoid
The 2026 paper presents PhoneBot as “a low-cost, open-source humanoid robot platform that repurposes commodity smartphones as its primary sensing and computing unit.” Its lower body has 13 actuators, and a separate mini single-board computer handles actuator communication and joint commands. The reported demonstrations include walking, following a person, recovering from a fall, filming, conversational interaction and mobile telepresence. Read the authors’ description at arxiv.org/abs/2610.08737.
PhoneBot is therefore a research platform, not a repurposing app that turns a phone into a finished household helper. The phone supplies high-level sensing and computation; the humanoid body supplies the 13 powered joints, structure and control electronics. The paper’s validation on four Android devices is useful evidence that several low-cost phones can work with the software, but it is not a universal device-compatibility list.

A 2012 PCWorld report described an Android phone used as a camera and interface on a LEGO NXT robot. The project could provide remote viewing and mobility, but the article says coding was required. It is a useful illustration of the concept and its limitations: the phone supplied the camera and connection while the LEGO kit supplied the drive system. It was a project, not a professionally tested alarm or security product.

Dobb·E: using a phone as a data-collection tool
The Dobb·E project shows another role for a phone. Its demonstration-collection tool combines an iPhone, a $25 reacher-grabber stick and 3D-printed parts. Researchers collected 13 hours of data from 22 homes and reported 81% success across 109 tasks in 10 homes for the resulting research system. Those numbers describe that experimental setup: the iPhone and grabber helped gather demonstrations for a separate manipulation robot. They are not a success rate for an old phone acting as a household robot.
Phone-powered build versus a dedicated home-robot kit
A dedicated kit starts with purpose-built mechanics and electronics. The TurtleBot project page describes a personal robot kit with open-source software intended to drive around a home and see in 3D. That description establishes intended capability, not a benchmark for chores, reliability or autonomy, and the page cited here does not provide a current price or setup-time figure.
| Comparison | Phone-powered DIY build | Dedicated personal robot kit |
|---|---|---|
| Computing and sensing | The phone may provide camera, IMU, wireless networking, processing and the interface, depending on supported hardware and software. | The kit supplies purpose-designed robotics hardware; a phone may be optional or simply serve as an interface. |
| What creates motion | A separate chassis or body, motors or actuators, motor drivers, batteries, controller electronics and control software. | The kit’s own mechanical and electronic components, matched to its software stack. |
| Documented tasks in these sources | OpenBot reports person following and navigation; PhoneBot reports walking, following, fall recovery, filming, conversation and telepresence. | TurtleBot describes indoor driving and 3D vision as intended capabilities; no household-chore benchmark is supplied. |
| Build and programming | OpenBot lists mechanical construction, firmware, Android apps, a controller and programming or training. The LEGO example also required coding. | It is presented as a kit, but the cited page does not specify current assembly time, skill level or every included component. |
| Cost evidence | OpenBot’s 2021 paper gives $50 for the robot body, excluding the phone. That is a historical design figure. | No current price is established by the cited TurtleBot page. |
| Best fit | Learning, experimentation, low-cost wheeled mobility and reusing a handset you already own. | A buyer who wants a coordinated platform rather than selecting and integrating every mechanical and electronic part. |
Neither source set provides a head-to-head test of reliability, battery runtime, privacy, safety or total current cost. Treat the table as a design comparison, not a ranking.

- Sturdy Material: The robot car chassis kit is made of sturdy PCB material, which is stronger and more resistant to falling than other acrylic material chassis. Robot wheels are made of high quality rubber and contain sponge inserts. The tread is flat, the contact area with the ground is large and non-slip.
- Large platform: The size of the robot car chassis is 256*150*2mm, which is larger than the ordinary chassis platform and very easy to expand. Environmentally friendly chassis is stable and flexible in rotation. Maximum load: 500g
- DIY Education Kit: Smart Robot Car Chassis is a good product for DIY enthusiasts. It is an integrated solution for robotic learning and education. Chassis kits can extend electronic systems like Raspberry Pi or Arduino to achieve functions like tracking, obstacle avoidance, distance measurement and wireless remote control.
- Build your own robot: The chassis is mechanically simple and consists of a platform with 4 DC geared motors and wheels. You can build your own robot car using Arduino/Raspberry Pi or other controllers and some modules. High degree of freedom, very suitable for DIY themes, popular science education, interest training, educational kits for adults.
- Support for technical questions: Chassis kits are practical learning packages for beginners, ideal for hobbyists, education, competitions and research projects. You can contact our technical support team to solve technical problems.
- Inventory the handset. Record its operating system version, processor, camera condition, battery health, Wi-Fi or Bluetooth support and whether it can run the required Android application. Remove a swollen or damaged battery from service; a robot’s vibration and heat are poor conditions for unsafe hardware.
- Choose a documented body and controller. Start with the body and electronics specified by the project, such as the OpenBot design, rather than an unverified generic chassis. Check wheel size, motor voltage, driver board, controller connection and the physical dimensions of the phone mount.
- Build the mechanical platform. Install the motors, wheels, battery holder and phone mount securely. Keep the camera’s field of view clear. Route wires away from wheels and gears, and add a physical power switch that you can reach without touching moving parts.
- Install firmware and the phone application. Follow the project’s repository instructions for the Arduino firmware, Android app and controller. Use the exact release and configuration that the documentation supports; do not assume that a current app will run on an unlisted old operating system.
- Pair and calibrate. Connect the phone to the robot controller using the project’s supported link. Calibrate steering, wheel direction and any sensors while the wheels are lifted off the floor. Confirm that a stop command cuts motor power rather than merely closing the phone screen.
- Test at low speed. Begin in an open area with no people, pets, stairs or loose cables. Test forward, reverse, turning, braking and loss-of-connection behavior. A camera feed is useful only when latency is low enough for the operator to stop before an obstacle.
- Add autonomy gradually. Try person following or navigation only after manual control works reliably. Keep a physical or software emergency stop available, and supervise every autonomous run until you understand how the robot behaves when lighting, flooring or Wi-Fi changes.
- Plan charging and cooling. The phone and drive battery may need separate charging. Avoid leaving either battery charging unattended inside a moving platform, and check temperatures after a sustained run.
Can it be a home-security or telepresence robot?
Remote monitoring
A phone on a mobile chassis can stream a view of a room and let an operator drive toward a sound or visual event. The LEGO example demonstrates that camera, interface and mobility can be combined with coding. This is suitable for a supervised project or occasional check-in, provided the network, power and camera placement are reliable.
It should not be described as a replacement for a professionally designed alarm or security system. The historical project was not security-tested, and the evidence here does not establish encrypted storage, tamper detection, guaranteed uptime, emergency response or compliance with any security standard. Keep the camera away from spaces where recording would violate another person’s privacy, and secure the account and network used for remote access.
Telepresence and conversation
PhoneBot reports conversational interaction and mobile telepresence on its research platform. A phone’s display, microphone, speaker and camera make those functions technically natural, but the experience depends on the robot body, network delay, audio feedback control and software. A phone-powered rover can carry a conversation endpoint; it does not automatically understand a home, avoid every obstacle or navigate safely around people.
What the documented numbers actually mean
| Figure | Context and qualification |
|---|---|
| 13 actuators | PhoneBot’s 2026 humanoid platform; these are the powered joints in the robot body, not components supplied by the phone. |
| Four smartphones | Number of devices on which the PhoneBot Android application was validated in the 2026 paper; not a universal compatibility claim. |
| $50 | OpenBot’s 2021 research-design cost for the electric robot body, excluding the smartphone; not a current complete-project price. |
| $25 reacher-grabber | Dobb·E’s data-collection tool used a reacher-grabber with 3D-printed parts and an iPhone; it is not a core rover component. |
| 13 hours from 22 homes | Dobb·E demonstration data collected for its research system; not a measure of an old phone’s endurance. |
| 81% across 109 tasks in 10 homes | Dobb·E’s reported experimental result for its resulting manipulation system; not a general household-robot success rate. |
Compatibility and buying checklist
Before ordering a body or downloading software, answer these questions:
Best Value
- PRE-ASSEMBLED 2WD ROBOT CHASSIS: Fully pre-assembled 2WD chassis with dual DC motors durable acrylic frame and battery holder ready to use out of the box saving assembly time and ensuring no missing components
- MOTORS WITH SPEED ENCODERS: Built-in encoders on both DC motors provide real-time speed feedback for precise motion control in line following autonomous driving and RC robot applications
- ARDUINO ESP32 COMPATIBLE: Works with Arduino Uno ESP32 ESP8266 Raspberry Pi and other 3.3V and 5V microcontroller boards for easy robot programming and rapid project development
- TUTORIALS AVAILABLE: Step-by-step tutorials available online by searching DIYables RC 2WD Car Chassis Kit ideal for STEM education robotics learning Arduino programming and coding projects
- Is the handset’s operating system explicitly supported, and can it install the required application?
- Does the camera work, and can the app access it without a manufacturer-specific restriction?
- Is the phone mount wide and deep enough, with the camera unobstructed?
- Does the body include a motor driver and controller compatible with the project’s firmware?
- Are the phone and motors powered separately, and can each be switched off safely?
- What happens when Wi-Fi or Bluetooth drops: stop, coast or continue the last command?
- Can you obtain replacement batteries, wheels and structural parts?
- Does the project documentation identify a supported release, build process and calibration procedure?
- Will the robot operate around stairs, pets, children or fragile objects without creating an unacceptable risk?
If any answer is unknown, treat the project as an experiment rather than a ready household appliance. The sources do not establish current support, reliability or safety for every old handset, chassis or operating-system version.
Common failure modes and practical fixes
The app will not install
Check the required Android version and processor architecture first. An old phone may be too old for the app, while a newer phone may expose a camera or permission behavior the project did not test. Use a handset listed by the project when possible; otherwise, expect to adapt software rather than simply changing a setting.
The robot moves in the wrong direction
Lift the wheels, verify motor polarity and run the project’s calibration routine. Swap a motor’s leads only when the controller documentation permits it, and keep the emergency stop within reach during every test.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Video is delayed or drops out
Reduce distance and interference, confirm which wireless link the project expects and test the robot with a direct local connection before attempting remote operation. Do not use a lagging video feed for unsupervised autonomous motion.
The phone overheats or shuts down
Inspect the mount for blocked vents, reduce sustained camera or inference load and separate the phone from a hot motor controller or battery. An aging battery can lose capacity under load; replace the handset or battery only with parts and procedures appropriate for that model.
Navigation works in one room but not another
Lighting, reflective surfaces, floor texture, Wi-Fi coverage and furniture layout can change perception and control. Re-test at low speed after every environmental change and keep manual control available. A platform report of navigation does not guarantee performance in your particular home.
Which approach makes sense for you?
Choose a phone-powered build when
- You already have a usable handset and want to learn robotics, computer vision or embedded control.
- You are comfortable assembling a body, installing firmware and diagnosing connections.
- A wheeled rover, supervised camera or telepresence experiment meets your goal.
- You accept that the phone, body and software may require separate upgrades.
Choose a dedicated kit when
- You want mechanics, electronics and software selected as one platform.
- You prefer documented 3D vision or indoor driving features over designing a chassis.
- You need a supportable system and are willing to verify the exact generation, included hardware and current price.
Do not choose either as a promise of household autonomy
PhoneBot and OpenBot demonstrate what integrated research platforms can do, while TurtleBot documents the intent of a personal robot kit. None of these sources establishes a consumer appliance that reliably cleans, manipulates arbitrary objects, replaces an alarm system or works with every old phone. Define one task, select a platform that documents the necessary hardware and software, and test it under controlled conditions before allowing it around people or property.
