Reading Scripture on a phone in church is not automatically disrespectful. If your congregation permits it, use the device for the Bible or another worship aid, silence notifications, and follow the service without switching to unrelated apps. Because expectations differ between congregations, follow local guidance or ask a church leader if you are unsure.
What makes phone use respectful in church?
The key distinction is whether the phone is helping you take part in worship or drawing your attention elsewhere. A Bible app open to the passage being read is different from checking messages, email, or social media. The Roman Catholic Parish of Osterley, for example, permits devices for worship aids such as Bible and missal apps while advising against unrelated messages, social media, photos, videos, or games during liturgy. That is one parish’s guidance, not a rule for every church. Osterley Parish’s church etiquette guidance

Attention is a useful standard beyond any one parish’s policy. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints’ Missionary Standards for Disciples of Jesus Christ Supplement 2026 says, “Checking email, answering texts, or scanning social media when you are with others is disruptive and disrespectful.” That statement concerns attention when with others; it is not a specific policy about Bible apps or conduct during a worship service. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints’ 2026 supplement
Does every church allow Bible apps?
No single rule for all Christian congregations is established by these sources. Churches may set their own expectations, so posted instructions and local guidance take precedence over assumptions based on another church’s practice. David Cloud’s 2015 article recommends that churches explain their mobile-device policies; it allows Bible study on a device where that is the church’s practice and advises against unrelated use. This is the author’s recommendation, not a denomination-wide rule. David Cloud’s article on cell phones in church

- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
If you cannot find a policy, ask a pastor, usher, or other church leader before the service. You can also choose a printed Bible if you would rather avoid uncertainty or prefer not to have a phone in hand.
Phone Bible or printed Bible: how to choose
| Consideration | Phone | Printed Bible |
|---|---|---|
| Local expectations | Use it when local guidance permits phones or worship apps. | A straightforward choice if the congregation discourages device use. |
| Distraction | Notifications and other apps can pull attention away; silence notifications and keep the Bible open. | A dedicated book avoids phone notifications and app switching. |
| How your activity appears | Others may not be able to tell whether you are reading Scripture or doing something unrelated. | The activity is more visible. Reformed Worship’s author prefers a physical Bible for public worship partly because it signals the special nature of the book and activity; that is a preference, not a prohibition on phones. Reformed Worship’s discussion of devices in worship |
| Readability and convenience | May suit your reading preferences or be convenient if you already use a Bible app. | May suit you if you prefer reading from paper or want a dedicated book. |

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
How to use a Bible app without distracting others
- Check the congregation’s expectations. Follow posted guidance, or ask a church leader if the policy is unclear.
- Silence alerts before the service. Use Do Not Disturb or another silent setting so messages and calls do not interrupt worship.
- Open the passage before the service begins. This reduces tapping and searching during readings.
- Keep the screen on Scripture. Avoid switching to email, texts, social media, games, or unrelated browsing.
- Adjust the display discreetly. Set brightness and text size so you can read without creating a bright distraction for people nearby.
Do church rules about displayed or reproduced readings ban Bible apps?
Not necessarily. The USCCB permissions page addresses permissions in the United States for reproducing certain liturgical readings and texts in worship aids, as well as projecting texts on screens. It says that, as of November 29, 2020, licensing is again required to reproduce Sunday and major-feast readings in digital or paper worship aids. It also says the Committee on Divine Worship’s current policy is not to grant permission to project readings and liturgical texts on screens during liturgy. Those permissions concern reproduction and projection; the page does not state a general ban on an individual reading Scripture in a Bible app. USCCB copyright and permissions
The Vatican’s 2010 apostolic exhortation Verbum Domini discusses Scripture in the liturgy and in devout reading, and emphasizes prayer accompanying Scripture reading. It does not address smartphones. Verbum Domini
