Phone Link and KDE Connect solve different problems
Both utilities connect an Android handset to a computer, but their centers of gravity differ. Phone Link is Microsoft’s Windows companion experience. Its documented Windows features include reading and replying to text messages, making and receiving calls, viewing recent phone photos, handling phone notifications and using selected mobile apps. The available features depend on the Android model, software versions and the Windows capability being used.

KDE Connect is a cross-platform device companion. KDE lists Linux, Android, iOS, macOS and Windows for the project and highlights clipboard sharing, access to files across devices, using a phone as a computer remote control, finding a phone and viewing phone notifications on the computer. That platform list does not guarantee that every function behaves the same way on every operating system.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →This is therefore not a simple winner-takes-all comparison. A Windows user who mainly answers messages and calls may get more value from Phone Link, while the same user who moves snippets and files between devices or uses a phone as a remote may prefer KDE Connect. Someone on Linux or macOS generally starts with KDE Connect because Phone Link is a Windows product.

Which operating systems can you use?
Phone Link: a Windows-first choice
Microsoft’s requirements describe Phone Link for Windows 10 with the October 2022 update or later, or Windows 11, paired with Android 10 or later. However, Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. In 2026, do not treat Windows 10 as a normally supported, current platform simply because the older requirement page still names it; verify the support position for your installation and plan around Windows 11 where possible.
Phone Link is not a general-purpose Linux or macOS desktop client. Its value comes from Windows integration, including Windows settings and Microsoft account services. Android support is also selective: Microsoft identifies eligible experiences on devices from manufacturers including Samsung, HONOR, OPPO, ASUS and vivo, but that list is not a promise that every model from those manufacturers exposes every feature.
KDE Connect: broader desktop reach
KDE lists Linux, Windows and macOS alongside Android and iOS. That makes KDE Connect the natural candidate when the computer is not running Windows or when the same companion concept needs to span several desktop operating systems. Availability does not establish feature parity, so check the function you need on the specific desktop and phone combination before depending on it.
What each app can do for everyday work
Messages, calls and phone apps
Phone Link is the stronger documented fit for a Windows user who wants phone communications in the desktop workflow. Microsoft describes reading and replying to text messages, making and receiving calls, managing phone notifications and using favorite mobile apps. “Selected” matters: running an Android app on Windows is device-dependent, not a universal Android capability, and the set of supported apps can vary.
KDE Connect’s official feature summary emphasizes notifications, files, clipboard and remote actions rather than a Windows-style catalog of phone apps or a dialer-and-texting workspace. Do not assume that installing KDE Connect gives you Phone Link’s app streaming or calling interface.

Notifications
Both products describe notification access. Phone Link presents phone notifications as part of its Windows integration. KDE Connect lists seeing phone notifications on the computer. In either case, Android permission choices influence what can appear; a denied notification or companion permission will look like a missing feature rather than a software failure.
Photos and camera-related functions
Phone Link can show recent phone photos. Windows 11 also has a separate Mobile Devices settings workflow for a linked Android 10-or-later phone. Microsoft lists showing the device in File Explorer, using its camera as a connected camera and receiving new-photo notifications. That workflow requires Windows 11 and Link to Windows version 1.23112.189 or later, and its availability must be confirmed on the particular setup.

KDE Connect’s product description does not establish an equivalent connected-camera mode or a Windows-style recent-photo gallery. Its file-access and transfer features may still cover a photo workflow, but do not substitute one product’s named feature for the other’s.
Clipboard, files and remote control
KDE Connect is the clearer match when the handoff itself is the goal. KDE highlights sharing a clipboard, accessing files across devices and using the phone as a computer remote control. It also lists a find-phone function, useful when the handset is nearby but misplaced.
Phone Link has documented transfer routes, but those routes are conditional. Microsoft describes file sharing through Phone Link and Link to Windows, drag-and-drop for selected devices and cross-device copy/paste for selected devices. The supported operation can depend on the phone, Windows edition, app version and the type of content being moved.

Phone Link requirements and setup
Check the prerequisites first
- A Windows PC running Windows 11 is the safer current target. Microsoft’s older requirement also names Windows 10 with the October 2022 update or later, but Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025.
- An Android phone running Android 10 or later.
- A Microsoft account for the normal pairing flow.
- The Link to Windows app on the Android phone, or the device integration supplied on an eligible handset.
- A network connection. Microsoft’s requirements page names the phone and PC on the same Wi-Fi network as the baseline. Its consumer guidance also describes Wi-Fi, mobile data or an instant hotspot in some configurations, so follow the current instructions for your exact setup rather than assuming one network mode always applies.
Pair the phone and PC
- Open Phone Link on the Windows PC and start the Android-phone pairing flow.
- On the phone, open Link to Windows or the handset’s built-in Link to Windows entry and sign in with the Microsoft account requested by the PC.
- Follow the pairing prompt, which may use a displayed code or QR-style confirmation depending on the version and device integration.
- Approve the Android permissions requested for notifications, messages, calls, photos or other content you want to expose. Permissions are functional requirements: declining one can remove that category while leaving the rest of the link active.
- Return to Phone Link and wait for the selected sections to populate. If a section is absent, check the phone’s permissions and eligibility before reinstalling anything.
The exact onboarding screens can change with the Link to Windows app and the handset manufacturer. Treat the labels on your current phone as authoritative, and do not infer that a successful pairing unlocks every Phone Link feature.

Phone Link file transfer: what is actually documented
Microsoft describes more than one transfer mechanism, and they have different limits. The documented drag-and-drop route for selected devices allows up to 100 files in one transfer and limits each file to 512 MB. Those are product constraints for that documented route, not a performance test and not a guarantee for every Android phone.
Cross-device copy and paste is also device-dependent. Microsoft describes support for text and images; images larger than 1 MB are resized when copied through that feature. If preserving the original image is important, use a file-sharing route instead of assuming clipboard transfer is lossless.
How to choose a transfer route
- Use the documented drag-and-drop path when your phone is eligible and you are moving a manageable batch of files within the 100-file and 512-MB-per-file limits.
- Use copy and paste for short text or quick image handoffs when resizing images above 1 MB is acceptable.
- Use another file-transfer method when the phone is not eligible, the file exceeds the documented limit or preserving the original image is essential.
Do not describe Phone Link as unrestricted file browsing. Microsoft’s guidance distinguishes file sharing, drag-and-drop and copy/paste, and each is tied to supported devices and versions.
Windows 11 Mobile Devices features are a separate capability
Windows 11 includes a Mobile Devices settings workflow for linking an Android 10-or-later phone. Microsoft lists three possible conveniences: displaying the linked phone in File Explorer, using its camera as a connected camera and receiving notifications when new photos arrive. The stated requirement includes Link to Windows app version 1.23112.189 or later.

This should be checked independently from ordinary Phone Link pairing. A phone can connect for messages or notifications without exposing every Mobile Devices option. Open the relevant Windows 11 settings area, add the Android phone, and confirm which toggles are offered on your account and handset. If the camera or File Explorer option is missing, verify Windows 11, the Link to Windows version and device eligibility before treating it as a fault.

Install the matching components
- Install KDE Connect on the desktop operating system you use: Linux, Windows or macOS.
- Install the companion app on the Android phone (or the iOS app if that is the mobile platform you are pairing).
- Open both apps and let each discover the other device. The exact discovery and pairing labels vary by desktop and app version.
- Select the intended computer on the phone, select the phone on the desktop when it appears, and approve the pairing request on both sides.
- Review the individual plugins or permissions offered by the current versions. Enable only the functions you need, such as notifications, clipboard, file access, remote control or the find-phone action.
KDE’s product page establishes the supported platforms and feature categories, not identical implementation details for every combination. If a plugin is unavailable on your operating system, regard that as a platform-specific limitation rather than evidence that the entire connection failed.
When KDE Connect is the better workflow
- You routinely move copied text between the phone and computer.
- You need access to files from either side instead of only a recent-photo view.
- You want the phone to act as a remote control for computer actions.
- You misplace the handset and want a computer-side find-phone function.
- Your computer fleet includes Linux, macOS and Windows and you want one cross-platform concept.
Decision guide by user profile
| Your situation | Start with | Reason and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Windows 11 laptop; priority is replying to texts and taking calls | Phone Link | Those communications features are explicitly part of Microsoft’s Windows experience. Confirm Android eligibility and grant the required permissions. |
| Linux workstation; priority is clipboard and file exchange | KDE Connect | KDE lists Linux support and names clipboard and file access. Verify the specific plugin behavior on your distribution and phone. |
| Mac desktop with an Android phone | KDE Connect | KDE lists macOS and Android; Phone Link is not a macOS desktop companion. |
| Windows PC; priority is a phone remote and locating the handset | KDE Connect | Those are KDE feature highlights, whereas Phone Link’s documented emphasis is Windows integration. |
| Windows 11; priority is recent photos, File Explorer access or a connected camera | Phone Link plus Mobile Devices check | Microsoft documents these as Windows 11 and device-dependent capabilities requiring Link to Windows 1.23112.189 or later. |
| Mixed Windows/Linux/macOS household | KDE Connect | The listed desktop reach is broader. Do not assume every function is identical across platforms. |
Troubleshooting: diagnose the missing feature
The phone pairs, but messages or notifications are empty
- Recheck Android notification, message and related permissions for Link to Windows or KDE Connect.
- Confirm that the phone is still connected through the network path required by the current app configuration.
- For Phone Link, verify that the Microsoft account and the intended phone are the ones shown on the PC.
- Do not use a missing category to conclude that the whole pairing is broken; permissions are granted by feature.
Phone apps or calls are unavailable in Phone Link
Phone-app access and calling are not universal Android functions. Check the model’s eligibility, Android version, Windows version and the Link to Windows integration supplied by the manufacturer. A successful basic connection does not imply support for app streaming or every call control.
File transfer fails
- Check whether the selected device supports the transfer route you are attempting.
- For documented drag-and-drop, keep the batch at 100 files or fewer and each file at 512 MB or less.
- For copy and paste, remember that the documented content types are text and images and that images above 1 MB are resized.
- Try a different documented route rather than repeatedly retrying an operation the phone does not expose.
KDE Connect pairs but one plugin is missing
KDE’s availability list does not promise feature parity. Check the desktop and mobile app versions, then inspect the available plugins and permissions for that operating-system pair. A missing remote-control or clipboard option can be platform-specific even when notifications work.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minutePrivacy, permissions and support changes
Both tools can expose personal content because their useful functions depend on permissions. Phone Link may request access to messages, notifications, calls, photos and app-related data. KDE Connect may request notification, clipboard, file or remote-control permissions depending on the plugins enabled. Grant the narrowest set that matches your workflow and remove permissions when you stop using a feature.
Best Value
The available official descriptions do not establish a comparable, end-to-end data-flow analysis for the two products. It is not supportable to label one categorically more private from these feature pages alone. For a privacy-sensitive deployment, read the current Microsoft and KDE privacy documentation, review Android permission screens and consider whether your organization permits clipboard or notification synchronization.
Compatibility is time-sensitive. Android releases, Windows builds, desktop packages, Link to Windows versions and handset integrations can change. Before relying on a specific capability, check the current requirements for the exact phone model, operating system and feature you intend to use.
The practical verdict
Phone Link is the focused choice for a Windows user who wants the phone’s communications and selected content represented inside Windows. Its strongest case is messages, calls, notifications, recent photos and eligible Android apps, with additional Windows 11 Mobile Devices features on supported setups.
KDE Connect is the flexible choice when the desktop is Linux, macOS or Windows and the work revolves around clipboard and file movement, notifications, remote control or finding the handset. Its cross-platform listing is a major advantage, but individual functions still need to be checked on the devices you own.
If both could fit your Windows computer, decide by the task you perform most often: choose Phone Link for integrated communications and selected phone apps; choose KDE Connect for cross-platform control and two-way device utilities.
