Phone Link can show and reply to messages, handle calls, display recent photos and notifications, send files, and mirror selected Android apps. It is not documented as a general remote-power or full-desktop control tool. A remote-desktop application gives you a Windows desktop session for opening programs, working with files, administering the machine and restarting it, but it requires more setup and exposes a host computer to remote connections.
For Microsoft’s built-in remote-PC workflow, the host must run a supported Windows Pro edition. A cross-platform full-control tool such as AnyDesk is the better fit when unattended access or documented remote restart is the deciding requirement.

The short decision
| If you need to… | Choose | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Read or reply to texts, make calls, view phone photos or notifications | Phone Link | These are documented phone-integration features. |
| Use an Android app from a Windows keyboard, mouse, pen or touch screen | Phone Link Apps | The app is mirrored from the phone while it continues running on Android. |
| Open Windows programs and manipulate Windows files | Remote-desktop app | You receive the Windows desktop and its application session. |
| Connect to a Windows Home PC with Microsoft’s built-in remote-PC host | Not Microsoft Remote Desktop’s consumer host workflow | Microsoft documents a Windows Pro requirement for the host. |
| Administer a computer when nobody is present or restart it remotely | Full-control tool such as AnyDesk | Its documentation covers unattended access and remote restart. |
| Keep setup and network exposure to a minimum | Phone Link, if its limited features are enough | It is a companion connection rather than a Windows remote-desktop host. |
What Phone Link actually controls
Phone Link is Microsoft’s companion connection between a Windows PC and supported Android or iPhone devices. Its purpose is to bring selected phone activity into Windows, not to turn the phone into a general-purpose remote keyboard for the PC.
Documented phone features
- Read and reply to text messages.
- Make and receive phone calls through the PC.
- View recent photos.
- Read and manage phone notifications.
- Send files through newer Windows mobile-device integration.
- See device status and recent activities where the newer integration is available.
Availability of the newer Start-menu mobile-device integration depends on the Windows 11 version and Microsoft’s rollout requirements. A feature appearing in one installation does not establish that every Windows 11 PC has it.

- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
Android app mirroring is not a Windows installation
Phone Link’s Android Apps feature mirrors apps from the phone. The Android device continues to run the app; the PC supplies mouse, keyboard, pen or touch input and displays the result. That distinction matters when you are deciding whether you have remote access to Windows: you are operating an Android app session, not installing or launching a native Windows program.
Some Android apps do not work with the feature, and some app interactions require a touch-capable PC. App compatibility can therefore be narrower than the list of apps installed on the phone.
Basic requirements
| Requirement | Documented baseline |
|---|---|
| Windows PC | Windows 10 with the October 2022 update or later, or Windows 11 |
| Android phone | Android 10 or later for Android use |
| Connectivity | A network connection between the phone and PC |
| iPhone support | Supported by Phone Link, with exact device and software availability dependent on Microsoft’s current compatibility requirements |
Can Phone Link shut down, restart or put the PC to sleep?
Microsoft’s current Phone Link pages do not document a generally available command for shutting down, restarting or putting a Windows PC to sleep. Do not treat a notification, device-status panel or Android app mirror as evidence that Phone Link can send those power commands.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
You can still reach Windows power controls through a full remote-desktop session. Once connected to the desktop, you use the normal Windows Start-menu or command-line actions available to the logged-in account. Whether the action succeeds depends on account permissions, policy and the host’s state; this is fundamentally different from Phone Link exposing a dedicated power button.
What a remote-desktop app gives you
Microsoft defines Remote Desktop as a connection from Windows, Android or iOS to a Windows PC where you use the remote computer’s apps, files and desktop as if you were sitting in front of it. That is the right category when your task starts with “open a Windows program” rather than “check something on my phone.”
Microsoft Remote Desktop
Microsoft’s consumer remote-PC workflow requires the host PC to run a supported Windows Pro edition. The connecting device can be another supported Windows, Android or iOS device. A Windows Home computer is not a supported host for this built-in consumer workflow, even though it can run a Remote Desktop client.
Enabling Remote Desktop is an administrative decision. Microsoft documents that setup opens a port and makes the PC accessible to devices on the local network. The setup guidance also covers Network Level Authentication (NLA) and limiting which users may connect. You should review both before enabling the feature, rather than treating the switch as a harmless convenience setting.

Cross-platform full-control tools
Tools in the broader remote-control category can cover operating-system combinations and host editions that do not fit Microsoft’s built-in host requirements. AnyDesk documents file transfer, clipboard sharing, session recording and cross-platform remote control. Its unattended-access workflow uses a password so a permitted user can connect when nobody is present, and its Remote Restart documentation covers restarting a remote device during a session.
Platform support, unattended-access behavior and licensing can change. Confirm the current client versions, host operating systems and terms before deploying a tool for regular administration.
Feature comparison
| Capability | Phone Link | Microsoft Remote Desktop | Full-control tool such as AnyDesk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Texts, calls, photos and notifications | Documented core features | Available only by operating a phone-related app on the Windows host, if one is installed | Available only through software present on the remote computer |
| Windows desktop session | No documented full-desktop session | Yes | Yes |
| Android app use from the PC | Mirrors selected Android apps; the phone runs them | Not its defining function | Can display whatever is running on the remote device, subject to that tool’s platform support |
| Unattended access | Not documented as a general Windows-host feature | Requires the host and account to be configured for remote access; the documented consumer workflow is a Windows Pro host | Documented by AnyDesk through password-protected unattended access |
| Remote restart | Not documented as a standard Phone Link command | Possible through the Windows session when permissions and host state allow | Documented by AnyDesk during a remote session |
| File transfer | File sending is part of newer Windows mobile-device integration; scope depends on rollout | Operate files in the remote Windows session | Documented file transfer |
| Network exposure | Companion connection between phone and PC | Enabling the host opens a port and requires access and authentication review | Requires a configured remote-control service and its security settings |
Choose by the task you actually have
“I only want messages, calls and photos on my PC”
Choose Phone Link. It is designed for exactly that phone-companion workflow and avoids configuring the Windows machine as a remote-desktop host. Check the Windows and phone requirements first, then pair the devices and grant only the notification, call, message or file permissions you intend to use.

“I need to open a Windows program or edit a file from my phone”
Use a remote-desktop application. Phone Link does not document a general Windows desktop session. Microsoft Remote Desktop is appropriate when the host is a supported Windows Pro edition and you are comfortable configuring access. A full-control alternative may be more suitable when the host is another supported operating system or when you need a documented unattended-access workflow.
“I need to restart an unattended machine”
Use a tool that explicitly documents unattended access and remote restart, such as AnyDesk, and configure it before the machine is left unattended. Phone Link should not be selected for this requirement because Microsoft does not document a standard Phone Link restart command.
“I only need to lock or power off the PC”
There are two separate questions. If you need a guaranteed, repeatable remote power action, Phone Link is not the documented solution. If you can open a full Windows session, you may use the normal Windows lock, sign-out or power controls available to your account. For an unattended machine, choose a remote-control product whose documentation explicitly covers the action and test the behavior on your exact Windows edition and hardware before depending on it.
Set up Phone Link for phone-to-PC features
- Confirm that the PC runs Windows 10 with the October 2022 update or later, or Windows 11.
- For Android, confirm Android 10 or later. For iPhone, check Microsoft’s current compatibility requirements for the specific device and software versions.
- Make sure the phone and PC have a network connection to each other.
- Open Phone Link in Windows and follow its pairing instructions; install or open the companion Link to Windows experience on the phone when prompted.
- Approve only the permissions needed for messages, calls, photos, notifications or file sharing.
- If Android Apps is offered, start a supported app from Phone Link and test mouse, keyboard, pen or touch input. If the app does not respond or is unavailable, it may be incompatible; some interactions require a touch-capable PC.
- If the Windows 11 Start-menu mobile-device panel is available, check its device-status, messages, calls, photos, recent-activity and file-sending options. Rollout and version requirements determine which of these appear.
Set up Microsoft’s Remote Desktop host
- Confirm that the computer you want to control runs a supported Windows Pro edition. Do not assume Windows Home can host the consumer Remote Desktop workflow.
- On the host, open Windows Settings and go to System > Remote Desktop. Enable Remote Desktop only if you accept the resulting access and administration responsibilities.
- Review the listed users and allow only the accounts that need remote access.
- Keep Network Level Authentication enabled unless you have a documented compatibility reason to change it. NLA requires authentication before a full remote session is established.
- Confirm that the client device is on the permitted network and that Windows Firewall and other network controls allow the connection.
- Install and open Microsoft’s Remote Desktop client on the Windows, Android or iOS device you will use to connect. Add the host name or address and the authorized account, then connect.
- After connecting, test the exact tasks you need: launching a program, opening files, locking the session and restarting. A successful login does not prove that every administrative action is permitted.
Because the host becomes reachable through a remote-access port, document who can connect, which network can reach it and how credentials are revoked. Disable Remote Desktop when it is no longer needed.

Set up unattended access with a full-control tool
- Install the host and client components for the operating systems you need to connect between.
- In the host’s unattended-access settings, enable unattended access and create a strong password. Do not reuse a normal email or Windows password.
- Limit access to the people and devices that require it, and review any account, address-book or permission controls the current client provides.
- Connect from the remote device and test file transfer, clipboard behavior and the actions you need while someone is available to recover the host.
- Test the documented remote-restart procedure. A restart will interrupt the current session; verify that the host service starts again and that you can reconnect after Windows returns.
- Review session-recording and privacy settings before using the tool on a shared or sensitive computer.
AnyDesk’s documentation covers unattended access and remote restart, but current platform support and licensing should be verified for your deployment rather than inferred from an older installation.
Security and privacy trade-offs
Phone Link
Phone Link generally has the smaller host-configuration footprint because it is a companion link rather than a documented full Windows remote-desktop server. Its permissions still matter: messages, call history, notifications, photos and app content can all be sensitive. Remove permissions or unlink the phone when the PC is shared.
Microsoft Remote Desktop
Remote Desktop changes the host’s attack and administration surface. Enabling it opens a port for network access, so use NLA, restrict allowed users and keep Windows and the client software updated. Do not enable it merely to obtain a phone-style power button; the configuration is justified when you genuinely need a Windows desktop session.
Unattended remote-control tools
Unattended access is powerful because it works without somebody at the host. Protect the unattended password, restrict who can connect, review logs or recordings where available and remove the configuration when the machine is retired. Remote restart is useful for maintenance, but it can interrupt work and leave unsaved files behind.
Troubleshooting by symptom
Phone Link pairs but shows no messages or photos
- Check that the PC meets the Windows baseline and that an Android phone is running Android 10 or later.
- Confirm that both devices have a network connection and that the phone’s companion connection is active.
- Review the individual notification, message, call and photo permissions instead of assuming pairing granted all of them.
- For Start-menu mobile-device features, check whether your Windows 11 version and rollout status support the panel.
An Android app will not open or accept input
- The app may not be compatible with Phone Link mirroring.
- Try a touch-capable PC if the app requires touch interaction.
- Remember that the phone is still running the app; check its connection, lock state and battery-saving restrictions.
Remote Desktop refuses the connection
- Verify that the host is a supported Windows Pro edition.
- Confirm Remote Desktop is enabled and that your account is included in the permitted-user list.
- Check that the client is on the network allowed to reach the host and that firewall rules are not blocking the connection.
- Review NLA and credentials. A user who can sign in locally is not automatically authorized for Remote Desktop.
An unattended session cannot reconnect after a restart
- Wait for Windows to finish restarting before trying again.
- Confirm that the remote-control service starts with Windows and that the host has network connectivity.
- Recheck the unattended-access password and any device or account restrictions.
- If the restart left an update, sign-in prompt or hardware confirmation screen, arrange a local recovery path; a remote tool cannot bypass every boot-state problem.
Which option is right for common scenarios?
| Scenario | Recommended approach | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Checking a text while working at a Windows desk | Phone Link | Grant message access and keep the phone connected. |
| Answering a phone call through a laptop | Phone Link | Call features depend on the paired phone and its permissions. |
| Copying a recent phone photo into a PC project | Phone Link | Recent-photo and file-sending availability varies by the Windows integration and rollout. |
| Running a Windows accounting or design program from an Android phone | Remote-desktop app | Phone Link Apps mirrors Android apps; it does not provide a Windows desktop. |
| Maintaining a Windows Pro workstation from another room | Microsoft Remote Desktop | Enable the host deliberately, use NLA and restrict users. |
| Maintaining a mixed-device fleet with no person at the host | Cross-platform full-control tool | Verify current operating-system support, unattended-access controls and licensing. |
| Occasionally locking or shutting down a PC without opening a desktop session | A tool with an explicitly documented power-control feature | Phone Link does not currently document a general shutdown, restart or sleep command. |
Bottom line for this comparison
Phone Link is the low-complexity choice when your endpoint is the phone: messages, calls, photos, notifications, file sending and selected Android apps. It should not be described as a remote Windows power controller or full desktop.
Choose Microsoft Remote Desktop when you need the Windows desktop and the host is a supported Pro edition. Treat enabling it as a security and administration change because it opens a port and requires authentication and user-access decisions. Choose a documented full-control tool such as AnyDesk when unattended operation or remote restart is central, especially across a broader mix of host and client platforms. In every case, test the exact Windows edition, phone, client version and permissions before relying on a remote action during an outage.
