Phone Gaming Controllers Compared: Backbone One vs Razer Kishi V2 vs GameSir G8

The right phone controller is determined first by your phone’s connector and physical dimensions, not by the logo on the box. For a Lightning iPhone, buy only a Lightning-specific Backbone One or Razer Kishi V2. For a USB-C phone, compare the USB-C versions and then verify length, thickness, camera clearance, case fit and operating-system support. GameSir’s G8 Galileo is the most completely specified example here, with published fit limits, a headphone jack, Hall Effect sticks, analog triggers, back buttons and charging passthrough. Neither the available manufacturer documentation nor independent testing establishes a universal winner for comfort, latency or durability.

This comparison covers Backbone One in its USB-C and Lightning variants, Razer Kishi V2 in its USB-C and Lightning variants, and the wired USB-C GameSir G8 Galileo. GameSir’s X2s Type-C appears separately because it is a different controller with different size limits.

Start with the connector and exact phone model

A controller that uses the wrong connector cannot be made compatible with an adapter without potentially changing fit, clearance or reliability. Identify your phone’s port before comparing buttons or software.

Controller model Connector variants covered here Documented phone platforms or use

GameSir G8 Galileo Wired USB-C USB-C phones within the published physical limits
GameSir X2s Type-C Wired USB-C iPhone 15 series and compatible Android phones within its separate limits

Backbone’s Lightning version is for iPhones with a Lightning port; its product guidance directs iPhone 15 and 16-series buyers to the USB-C version. Do not assume that a Backbone One bought for an older iPhone will fit a newer USB-C iPhone.

Razer likewise sells separate Kishi V2 connector versions. “Kishi V2” without the connector suffix is not enough information to establish compatibility.

The GameSir examples in this guide are wired controllers. The G8 Galileo and X2s Type-C are not interchangeable names for one product.

Will the controller physically fit your phone?

Measure the phone, not just the screen

Use the phone’s overall body dimensions where the controller grips it. Screen size alone does not account for a thick chassis, a protruding camera island or a protective case. Measure with the case installed if you intend to leave it on.

GameSir publishes the clearest numerical requirements for the G8 Galileo: phone length from 110 to 185 mm, body depth no greater than 13 mm, camera depth no greater than 5 mm and a case up to 1 mm thick. These are manufacturer limits for that model, not a universal standard for mobile controllers.

The X2s Type-C has a narrower 110–168 mm length range and a 1 mm case allowance in its connection tutorial. Its FAQ separately identifies iPhone 15 series support and Android phones, but the FAQ displays inconsistent units for the length text. Use the 110–168 mm figure from the connection tutorial and check the current manual before buying.

Cases and camera bumps are common failure points

  • Remove a case temporarily if the phone will not seat fully or the connector cannot reach the port.
  • For the G8 Galileo, a case thicker than 1 mm exceeds the published allowance.
  • Check whether the camera module extends into the controller’s upper rail. The G8’s published camera-depth limit is 5 mm.
  • Do not transfer the G8 or X2s measurements to Backbone One or Kishi V2; comparable limits were not stated in the cited pages.

Will your games work?

Native controller support is the safest route

Mobile games must be programmed to accept a physical controller. A controller does not automatically convert every touch-only game into a gamepad title. Check the game’s own support information and the relevant cloud-gaming or remote-play service before purchasing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Backbone describes native mobile games, cloud services and remote play as use cases. Its pages name Xbox Game Pass, Apple Arcade, GeForce NOW, Amazon Luna and PlayStation or PC remote play as examples. Those names indicate possible pathways, not a guarantee that every game, subscription or region supports the controller.

Touch remapping has operating-system and game limits

Razer documents a remapping feature in the Razer Nexus app for selected mobile games. Treat this as a software function with per-game and per-platform caveats, not universal compatibility.

GameSir support documentation for the related G8+ MFi model says its Android touch-mapping functions are unavailable on iOS because of platform restrictions and advises iOS users to choose games with native controller support. That is an OS-level warning from a related model, not proof that every G8 Galileo or X2s feature behaves identically. Verify the exact model’s current support information before relying on remapping.

Hardware features that can change your choice

Charging while playing

Razer Kishi V2 documentation describes USB-C passthrough charging. GameSir lists passthrough charging for the G8 Galileo but qualifies that not all phones support it. Backbone’s cited pages do not establish a like-for-like passthrough specification, so verify the exact Backbone version if charging during play is essential.

Headphones and wired audio

The G8 Galileo specification lists a 3.5 mm audio jack. A comparable headphone specification was not established for the Backbone One or Kishi V2 material cited here. If you use wired headphones, confirm the port arrangement on the exact product before ordering.

  • Cushioned and Durable Membrane: The X5 Lite is equipped with cushioned and durable membrane triggers and buttons. The cushioned feedback provides a comfortable experience while ensuring quieter operation

Sticks, triggers and extra buttons

GameSir lists Hall Effect sticks, analog triggers and two rear buttons on the G8 Galileo, along with software customization. The X2s Type-C FAQ also identifies Hall Effect sticks and analog triggers. These are published hardware descriptions; they do not establish better latency, accuracy, comfort or durability than the other controllers.

For Kishi V2, the documented differentiator in this comparison is Nexus software remapping rather than a measured control-performance advantage. The cited Backbone pages identify gaming use cases but do not provide a complete, directly comparable control-specification table.

Which model fits each buyer?

Choose a Lightning controller for a Lightning iPhone

Limit your shortlist to a Lightning-specific Backbone One or Lightning-specific Kishi V2. Confirm the exact iPhone model and the controller’s current compatibility list. A USB-C version is not the correct connector choice for that phone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose among USB-C models after checking measurements

USB-C Android phones and USB-C iPhones can use the corresponding Backbone One or Kishi V2 variants, while the G8 Galileo and X2s Type-C are wired USB-C options. Compare the phone’s measured length, depth, camera bump and case against the selected model’s published limits. The G8’s 185 mm maximum accommodates a longer phone than the X2s tutorial’s 168 mm maximum, but that fact alone does not establish better ergonomics or universal fit.

  • Hall Effect Joysticks and Triggers

Prioritize charging or a headphone jack

If charging passthrough is mandatory, the cited documentation supports it for Kishi V2 and G8 Galileo, with the G8 qualification that phone support varies. If a 3.5 mm headset connection matters, the G8 Galileo is the model in this comparison whose specification explicitly lists that jack. Verify the physical port location and audio behavior for your phone.

Prioritize remapping for a touch-only game

Check the game and operating system first. Kishi V2’s Nexus remapping is documented for selected games, while GameSir’s related-model documentation warns that iOS touch mapping can be unavailable. Native controller support remains the least ambiguous path.

Prioritize cloud gaming or remote play

Backbone explicitly presents cloud and remote-play pathways and names several services. Check the service’s region, subscription requirement, supported games and phone operating system separately. On Android, Backbone states that the official PS Remote Play app supports the Backbone One PlayStation Edition, while other Backbone controllers are not supported there. Do not generalize that exception to every remote-play app.

How to check compatibility before ordering

  1. Record the connector. Write down Lightning or USB-C and match it to the controller variant name.
  2. Measure the phone. Record body length and depth with the intended case fitted. Note the camera bump’s height and position.
  3. Compare the model-specific limits. For G8 Galileo, check 110–185 mm length, 13 mm maximum depth, 5 mm camera depth and 1 mm case thickness. For X2s Type-C, use the 110–168 mm and 1 mm case figures from its connection tutorial.
  4. Check the game. Confirm native controller support, or verify that a legitimate remapping feature supports the exact game and operating system.
  5. Check the feature you cannot compromise on. Confirm passthrough charging, a headphone jack, rear buttons or other requirements in the exact model specification.
  6. Check current stock and price locally. Prices and availability vary by country, connector variant and date; no stable cross-model price comparison is established here.

Basic setup and first-use checks

Wired USB-C models

  1. Remove a case if it exceeds the model’s allowance or prevents the phone from seating flat.
  2. Expand the controller, align the phone’s USB-C port with the plug and insert it without forcing the connector.
  3. Confirm that the phone is held evenly and that the camera housing clears the upper rail.
  4. Launch a game known to support controllers and test both sticks, triggers, face buttons and any rear buttons.
  5. If you need remapping, install and configure only the companion software that supports your exact controller and operating system, then test the target game before a session.

Backbone One and Kishi V2 variants

  1. Confirm that the connector model matches the phone before attaching it.
  2. Seat the phone so the connector is straight and the body rests on both sides of the controller.
  3. Open the manufacturer’s companion software if you want its library, settings or supported-service shortcuts.
  4. Test a native controller game first; this separates a physical connection problem from a game that simply lacks controller input.

Troubleshooting common problems

The phone does not connect

  • Recheck Lightning versus USB-C and confirm you did not buy the other variant.
  • Remove the case and reseat the phone so the plug is fully inserted.
  • Try a game with confirmed native controller support before diagnosing the hardware.
  • Restart the phone and reconnect the controller if the operating system does not detect it.

The phone fits but the camera or buttons are obstructed

  • Compare the camera bump with the model’s clearance requirement; the G8 Galileo limit is 5 mm camera depth.
  • Check the phone’s position in the rails and remove a thick case.
  • If the body exceeds the published length or depth, do not force the controller; choose a model with a suitable range.

Charging passthrough does not work

  • Use the controller’s specified charging port and a compatible charger.
  • For G8 Galileo, remember that the manufacturer says passthrough is not supported by every phone.
  • Test charging with the game closed to distinguish a phone or charger limitation from a controller connection issue.

Buttons work in one game but not another

This usually indicates game-support differences rather than a failed controller. Use a title with native support, or confirm that the exact remapping feature supports the game and operating system. Do not assume that an Android mapping function is available on iOS.

What the available evidence can and cannot prove

The specifications above come from manufacturer product pages, FAQs and support material. They establish connector variants, stated fit limits and listed features. They do not provide a controlled head-to-head test of comfort, input latency, durability, battery impact or long-term reliability. A fair buying decision therefore depends on your phone, games and required features rather than an unsupported overall ranking.

Prices and retailer availability were not established as a stable comparison. Check the current listing for your country, verify that it names the correct connector and model, and confirm the return policy in case your phone’s case or camera module prevents a proper fit.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
