Before accepting, check the phone’s full price and payment schedule, the credit amount and duration, the plan and other requirements, and what happens to remaining credits or the device balance if you pay off early, upgrade, change plans, or cancel. The exact promotion terms and installment agreement—not the advertised “free” price—determine your obligations.
Why the installment can still appear on your bill
Many carrier deals finance the phone at its full price and apply a promotional credit separately over time. Verizon describes monthly credits during a promotional term; AT&T describes equal monthly discounts during an installment term, often 36 months; and T-Mobile says recurring credits can offset some or all of the equipment installment. These are different carriers’ descriptions, not a single industry-wide rule. Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile explain their respective programs.

Read the installment and credit as separate bill items. The installment is the scheduled device charge; the promotional credit is a separate reduction that may depend on continued eligibility. A phone described as “free” may therefore still have a device payment listed each month, with credits intended to offset it over the offer period.

What to compare before accepting an offer
Compare the whole commitment, not just the headline savings. Put the following details side by side for each offer you are considering:

A larger credit is not automatically the better deal if it requires a more expensive plan than you would otherwise use. Compare the added plan cost over the credit period with the net device savings you expect. There is no universal calculation: the plans, offer conditions, taxes, and fees depend on your specific account and location.
How payoff, upgrades, plan changes, and cancellation can affect credits
Do not assume every carrier—or every promotion from the same carrier—handles these actions alike. Verizon says paying off early or moving to a nonqualifying plan can stop promotional credits. AT&T says discounts may stop if you upgrade or pay off early. T-Mobile says cancellation can affect eligibility and directs customers to the specific promotion terms for what happens to the device payment plan. Payoff is not necessarily the same as cancellation. T-Mobile says credits may continue through the remaining promotional period after payoff for some offers, which can run up to 24 or 36 months; the terms of the particular promotion control. Verizon and AT&T describe early payoff as a possible reason credits stop. Do not count on future credits after payoff unless your offer explicitly confirms they continue.
Before making a change, ask the carrier for the expected payoff balance and whether remaining credits continue, stop, or are handled another way under your offer. Check early upgrade, plan change, line cancellation, number transfer, trade-in, and account changes separately: one action’s treatment does not establish the treatment of another.

Checklist: verify the terms and the first bill
- Read the installment agreement. Confirm the full device price, scheduled payments, and remaining balance. Verizon says its device payment agreement contains payment amounts and terms; the bill’s device details show the remaining balance and credits. Verizon device deals FAQs.
- Record the credit amount and duration. Find out how much is credited each month, how many months it lasts, whether it covers the whole installment, and when it starts. AT&T says some discounts are applied in equal amounts monthly during the installment term, often 36 months. T-Mobile says offer periods may be up to 24 or 36 months; those examples do not establish the length of your promotion. AT&T bill discounts; T-Mobile promotional offers.
- Confirm every condition in writing. Check the required plan, line and account status, trade-in conditions, and any other eligibility rules. Ask whether changing the plan or account affects the credit.
- Ask about each possible exit. Get answers for early payoff, upgrade, plan change, cancellation, number transfer, and other account changes. Ask for the payoff balance and how the remaining credits are treated under this exact offer.
- Inspect the bill after activation. Find the device installment and promotional credit as separate entries, then compare the amounts with the offer. AT&T says credits may appear as one-time or monthly discounts; Verizon identifies where device promotion credits appear on the bill. AT&T bill discounts; Verizon device deals FAQs.
- Calculate your own total. Include the net device cost after credits, any extra plan cost over the offer period, checkout taxes and fees, and the balance you might owe if you leave before all credits arrive.
Use the exact offer terms as the final word
Carrier support pages describe common mechanics, but promotions can have different conditions and can change over time. The offer’s written terms and your installment agreement govern your specific deal. If a support-page summary and the offer documents appear inconsistent, ask the carrier to explain the terms for your account before agreeing or making a change.
