Neither approach is a proven universal winner. A phone-based detox changes the cues, notifications, and access controls on the smartphone you already own. A distraction-free device changes the device itself by removing many functions that invite checking. Start with built-in controls if you want a cheap, reversible experiment. Consider a dedicated minimalist phone when you repeatedly override software limits and are willing to give up apps and convenience. No head-to-head study in the available evidence shows that one strategy works better for everyone.
The right choice depends on the distraction you are trying to interrupt, the phone functions you cannot lose, how much friction you want, and whether you can live with a less capable device.

What the two approaches actually change
Phone-based digital detox
A phone-based detox keeps your current smartphone but changes how easy or attractive it is to use. Common measures include grayscale, disabling nonessential notifications, moving tempting apps away from the first home screen, using Focus or Do Not Disturb modes, and applying app-use limits or blocking controls.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →These measures operate at different strengths. Grayscale changes the visual reward of colorful feeds while leaving every underlying function available. Notification controls reduce interruptions before they become a checking session. App pauses and blocking tools create a more direct barrier, although the owner can usually change or disable them. Treat “digital detox” as an umbrella term rather than a single intervention.

Distraction-free device
A distraction-free device is a separate or replacement phone designed around a narrower set of functions. The restriction is structural: instead of asking a general-purpose smartphone not to run certain apps, the device may omit the browser, app store, or email entirely.
One example, Light Phone III, is described by a secondary overview as using LightOS without a general-purpose browser, email client, or app store. That overview lists calling, messaging, an alarm and timer, calculator, calendar, camera, directions, contacts, hotspot, music, notes, podcasts, and gallery. The manufacturer’s product information should be checked for the current feature list, carrier support, and regional availability before purchase because those details can change.
A limited phone is not automatically impossible to bypass. You can keep another smartphone, use a computer for web access, or switch devices when a task demands it. Its advantage is the extra friction and the deliberate separation of essential communication from entertainment and feeds.
What the published evidence says about changing your current phone
Grayscale can reduce measured use, but results are not uniform
Dekker and Baumgartner’s 2024 paper describes grayscale as a “self-nudge”: it changes the visual cues on a phone without removing the phone’s capabilities. In that paper’s discussion of earlier work, Holte and colleagues’ 2023 study of 133 participants was reported as finding 22 fewer minutes of objectively measured daily screen time during grayscale periods. Zimmermann and Sobolev’s 2022 study of 112 participants was reported as finding 50 fewer minutes per day.

Those numbers come from the 2024 paper’s summary of prior studies, not from its own sample. They should not be treated as a guaranteed saving for a new user, and they do not show that every distracting app will decline by the same amount. One earlier study found less internet browsing and social-media use but no reduction in video use. Another found lower game use but no difference in entertainment or social-media use. Differences in how researchers classified apps may partly explain the disagreement.
The 2024 grayscale intervention had narrower benefits
In their own one-week grayscale study, Dekker and Baumgartner observed reduced screen time but no perceived improvement in productivity and no self-reported improvement in sleep quality. Their paper also describes evidence for stress, sleep, and productivity benefits as lacking or mixed. A lower usage number is therefore not proof that grayscale improves wellbeing, work output, or rest.
The authors write that, because grayscale is readily available on smartphones, it “has the potential to be an easily implemented intervention to improve digital well-being.” That is a statement about accessibility and potential, not evidence that the setting works equally well for every person.

The broader design literature treats notification reduction and home-screen changes as ways to alter the triggers that start habitual checking. A randomized-trial result describes small changes to phone settings or the surrounding environment as nudges that may reduce smartphone use. The retrieved material does not provide a dependable effect size from the primary full text, so use the idea as a design principle rather than a promise of a specific reduction.

A 2022 review search result classified digital-wellbeing tools into limits on phone or app use, offline-focus tools, tracking, minimalist launchers, and notification controls. Its reported counts were not independently verified in the available full text, so they are not a sound basis for estimating how common or effective any category is.
Evidence for stronger restrictions is related, not a device comparison
MinimalistPhone app study
A 2025 experimental study of the MinimalistPhone app reported reduced habitual behavior and lower overall screen time in its surfaced abstract. The available material did not include the complete methods, sample description, or effect sizes. This is preliminary, app-specific evidence about a stronger interface intervention, not proof that a particular physical phone beats ordinary settings.
Mobile-internet blocking study
A separate 2025 study blocked mobile internet for two weeks while leaving calls and texts available. The search result reported reduced smartphone use, better sustained attention, and improved subjective wellbeing; internet access remained possible on other devices. This demonstrates that a more powerful access restriction can be studied experimentally, but it was not a trial of Light Phone III, and it did not compare a dedicated device with grayscale, app limits, or notification changes.

Phone settings versus a minimalist phone
| Decision factor | Existing-phone detox | Distraction-free device |
|---|---|---|
| Restriction strength | Ranges from a visual cue change to app pauses or blocking. Core smartphone functions remain available. | Can remove whole classes of functions, such as a general browser, email client, or app store, depending on the model. |
| Reversibility | Usually reversible in seconds or minutes, which makes testing easy but bypassing easy too. | Requires switching phones or keeping another device, creating more friction but not an absolute barrier. |
| Essential functions | Retains maps, banking, authentication, work apps, accessibility features, cameras, and other apps already on the phone. | May retain calls, messages, directions, calendar, camera, hotspot, music, notes, and similar basics, but the exact list varies by model and software version. |
| Cost and commitment | Uses hardware you already own; built-in controls generally add no purchase cost. | Requires a second or replacement phone and may require a compatible carrier plan. Current prices and availability are variable and should be checked before buying. |
| Best match for the trigger | Grayscale suits visual temptation; notification changes suit interruption; app controls suit a specific app or category. | Best suited to someone who wants particular app classes unavailable on the everyday device. |
| Evidence status | Some studies address grayscale, nudges, or blocking, with mixed outcomes and no universal effect. | No retrieved head-to-head trial establishes that a minimalist phone outperforms settings. |
How to run a phone-based detox without buying anything
Use a staged experiment rather than changing every setting at once. That lets you identify which intervention affects your own behavior and prevents a failed all-or-nothing attempt from teaching you nothing.

- Record a baseline. For three to seven ordinary days, note total screen time, the number of unlocks if your phone reports it, and the apps that consume the most time. Also write down the situations that trigger checking: waking, waiting, work transitions, meals, or bedtime.
- Choose one primary trigger. If colorful feeds pull you in, begin with grayscale. If alerts start the behavior, begin with notification changes. If one or two apps dominate, begin with app limits or a blocking control rather than treating every app as equally problematic.
- Enable grayscale. Open your phone’s Settings and use its built-in search for “grayscale,” “color filters,” or “color correction”; the label and menu path differ by operating-system version. Keep a note of how to reverse it so the experiment remains voluntary and safe for tasks that depend on color.
- Remove nonessential notifications. Leave calls, messages, calendar alerts, authentication prompts, accessibility alerts, and other genuinely important notices enabled. Silence promotional, social, news, and game alerts first. A notification that is merely less frequent is still an interruption if it appears during focused work.
- Change the first screen. Move high-trigger apps off the home screen, remove widgets that display feeds or counts, and place tools such as maps, banking, transit, or work apps where they remain easy to reach. Do not hide an essential safety or accessibility function just to make the screen look minimal.
- Add an access barrier where needed. Use the phone’s app-limit, Focus, or blocking feature for the specific app or time window that causes trouble. Because these controls are usually editable by the owner, treat them as friction rather than a lock.
- Measure experience as well as minutes. At the end of the trial, compare screen time and unlocks with your baseline, then record whether you felt less interrupted, more focused, more anxious about missing messages, or inconvenienced by the changes. The 2024 grayscale study shows why subjective outcomes should not be inferred from usage data alone.
If one setting helps, keep it and test the next change separately. If grayscale changes nothing, that does not disprove notification controls or app blocking; it may simply mean visual appeal was not your main trigger.

You keep overriding software limits
Repeatedly extending an app limit, disabling Focus, or restoring notifications indicates that a reminder inside the same device may not create enough friction. A separate phone moves the decision earlier: you choose which device to carry before the urge appears.
Your required tools are genuinely basic
A limited phone is more practical when your daily needs are mostly calls, messages, a calendar, directions, music, notes, a camera, and hotspot access. Verify every critical requirement before switching: work authentication, banking, transit tickets, medical or accessibility apps, two-factor methods, emergency features, and the ability to reach services in your region.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesYou accept a two-device or replacement-phone routine
Decide whether the minimalist phone will replace your smartphone or work beside it. A replacement demands a migration plan for contacts, authentication, photos, and carrier service. A secondary device can preserve access to demanding apps at home, but carrying both phones may reduce the intended friction. Check carrier compatibility, network bands, eSIM or SIM requirements, and current software support before ordering.

Understand what a model does and does not remove
For Light Phone III, the secondary overview cited above describes the omission of a general-purpose browser, email client, and app store alongside a set of communication, navigation, productivity, media, and camera tools. Treat that as a starting description, not a permanent specification. Manufacturer documentation should settle current features, supported networks, regional limits, warranty terms, and software changes.
A practical comparison trial before you buy
A short self-observed trial cannot prove which strategy works in the population, but it can expose mismatches between your habits and your requirements.
- Week one: ordinary phone with targeted controls. Keep your baseline phone, apply the smallest intervention aimed at your main trigger, and log screen time, unlocks, missed communications, and how often you bypassed the control.
- Week two: stronger separation if available. Borrow or use a compatible limited phone, or simulate the same separation by leaving your smartphone at home during defined periods. Keep calls and messages available if those are essential. Record tasks that forced you back to the smartphone.
- Compare friction and outcomes. Look at actual checking behavior, not just whether the device felt austere. Count interruptions avoided, essential tasks delayed, workarounds created, and any anxiety or safety concern.
- Set a maintenance rule. Choose the least restrictive setup that reliably addresses your trigger. If a setting works and you can maintain it, a purchase may add cost without adding useful benefit. If settings fail because they are too easy to undo, the extra friction of a dedicated device may justify its inconvenience.
Common failure modes and fixes
“Grayscale did nothing.”
Your trigger may be alerts, habit, boredom, or a particular app rather than color. Keep grayscale only if it has another benefit, then test notification reduction or a targeted block.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minute“I missed something important.”
Review notification categories instead of silencing everything. Preserve calls, direct messages from key people, authentication, calendar, health, accessibility, and emergency alerts, and create a clear check-in schedule for lower-priority communication.
“The minimalist phone cannot do a required task.”
List failures before abandoning the experiment. Some can be handled on a computer or at planned times; others, such as authentication, workplace software, medical tools, or accessible interfaces, may make a replacement phone unsuitable. A two-device arrangement or a less restrictive setting may be safer.
“I simply switched back.”
That is information about friction, not a moral failure. Move from a reversible setting to a physical separation only if the purchase, carrier setup, and loss of convenience are acceptable. A dedicated device is not unbypassable if another smartphone remains readily available.
“Lower screen time made me expect better wellbeing.”
Track sleep quality, productivity, stress, and attention separately. The one-week grayscale study found lower screen time without perceived productivity or sleep-quality improvement, so do not use one metric as a substitute for the outcomes you actually want.

Quick Recap
Decision guide
- Choose existing-phone controls first if cost, reversibility, maps, banking, work apps, authentication, or accessibility are priorities.
- Choose a stronger settings combination if you can identify a specific trigger and are willing to tolerate planned inconvenience without buying another phone.
- Investigate a distraction-free device if you repeatedly override limits, want whole categories of apps absent, and your essential tasks fit the model’s verified feature list.
- Keep expectations modest because the available studies cover individual interventions and adjacent restrictions, not a direct contest between a normal smartphone setup and a specific minimalist phone.
