Identify exactly where the crash occurs
“Startup crash” can describe several different failures. Record the last screen you see before changing anything, because the failure stage determines which test is most informative.

Write down whether the problem happens every time, only after a particular save, or only on one map. That distinction is more useful to support than a general statement that the game “does not work.”

Check the published PC requirements
Steam lists Pharaoh: A New Era as a 64-bit Windows game. The remake of the 1999 city builder includes the Cleopatra: Queen of the Nile expansion, contains 50 missions, and was released on February 15, 2023. The requirements below are the published baseline, not a guarantee that every configuration will be crash-free.

To check your Windows edition, open Settings → System → About and look for the system type. In the same page, note the processor and installed RAM. Open Task Manager → Performance → GPU to identify the active graphics adapter. In File Explorer, right-click the drive containing Steam and choose Properties to confirm that at least the required free space remains.
If your installation is 32-bit Windows, the operating system itself does not meet the published baseline. If the processor, graphics adapter, memory, or free space is below the table, software troubleshooting cannot make that configuration compliant. If it meets the baseline, continue with the software checks; the listed minimum is not evidence that a purchase is necessary.
Use this troubleshooting order
1. Restart and create a controlled test
Restart Windows before testing again. Do not launch a browser, recording utility, tuning tool, or mod manager at the same time. Start the game from the Steam library, not an old desktop shortcut, so Steam can apply the current launch state. Try to reach the main menu and, if that works, load a new or different mission before returning to a save that previously failed. This establishes whether the fault is global or tied to one saved game or map.

2. Update the graphics driver
Graphics-driver state is the only concrete technical factor connected to a loading-crash report in the available support discussion. A Steam responder advised, “It may be that you have to check your drivers for updates.” That is community advice, not a universal diagnosis, but it makes the driver the highest-value software check after requirements.
Identify whether your adapter is from NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel, then use that vendor’s current driver package for your exact model and Windows version. Choose the clean-install or factory-reset option when the installer offers one. Reboot after installation, launch Steam, and repeat the same controlled test. Record the driver version before and after the change so you can tell support exactly what changed.
3. Apply every available game update
In Steam, open Library, select the game, and let any pending download finish before launching. Steam’s official announcement documents post-launch patches and says, “Today’s patch is focused on Auto Save and Quality of Life Improvements!” That statement does not promise a crash fix, but it confirms that the installation can change after release. An outdated build is therefore a sensible condition to eliminate.
In the game’s Steam properties, open Updates and leave automatic updates enabled unless you have a specific reason to manage them manually. If Steam shows a queued update, wait for it to complete rather than testing an older executable.

4. Verify the Steam installation
Damaged or incomplete files can cause a crash before the menu or while a map is being loaded. Close the game, then follow this exact path:
- Open Steam → Library.
- Right-click Pharaoh: A New Era and choose Properties.
- Select Installed Files.
- Click Verify integrity of game files.
- Allow Steam to reacquire any files it reports, then restart Steam and test again.
Verification checks the installation; it does not update Windows or your graphics driver. If the result says files were replaced, repeat the same launch scenario after Steam finishes writing them.
5. Disable overlays, mods, and injectors
Third-party software can insert code into a game before or during rendering. If the crash disappears, re-enable one component at a time and test after each change. The component that restores the crash is a strong lead. If nothing changes, return the settings to normal and continue; disabling these tools is an isolation test, not a title-specific guarantee.

Follow the branch that matches your symptom
When the game exits immediately
Start with the operating-system architecture, available storage, and hardware comparison. Then update the graphics driver, reboot, and verify the installation. If the game still closes before a window appears, test with every overlay and mod disabled. Note whether Steam displays an error, whether the process remains visible in Task Manager for a few seconds, and whether another Windows user account behaves differently. These observations help distinguish a launch-environment problem from a game-file problem.
When the screen stays black
Wait briefly once after a clean launch to determine whether the window eventually reaches the menu; do not repeatedly force-close it during the first test. If it remains black, update the graphics driver and ensure the game is current before changing other settings. Disable overlays because a capture layer can appear as a black frame while the underlying process is running. If audio plays but the image does not, tell support that distinction rather than describing it only as a crash.
When only map loading fails
Verify the files before deleting saves or changing Windows settings. Test a new mission and a different map. If new content loads but one saved game does not, preserve the failing save and report that narrow pattern. If every map fails after the menu, prioritize the driver update or clean reinstall, then repeat the test with mods and overlays disabled.

AMD-specific driver guidance
A Steam support responder reported that some AMD users needed to remove AMD GPU drivers and reinstall them with AMD’s web downloader. Treat this as an anecdotal report about certain systems, not as an instruction that every AMD owner must follow. A clean removal can affect display settings and other applications, so create a restore point or otherwise ensure you can recover your preferred configuration before using a vendor cleanup utility.

For a cautious sequence, first try the normal current driver installer and its clean-install option. If the crash remains and your adapter is AMD, record the existing driver version, use AMD’s official cleanup or removal method, reboot as instructed, install the current package from AMD, reboot again, and retest without overlays or mods. If the behavior is unchanged, do not repeat the same removal indefinitely; provide the before-and-after versions to support.
Do not jump straight to a hardware purchase
The published requirements establish a compatibility floor, but no available evidence identifies a universal hardware defect, a required graphics-card upgrade, or a crash-rate statistic for this game. Buying a component before checking the driver, game build, file integrity, and third-party software can leave the actual cause untouched. If your hardware meets the table and other games run normally, complete the software sequence and collect diagnostic details before spending money.

Steam identifies Dotemu as the support provider for the title and publishes [email protected] as a contact. If the crash remains after the staged checks, send one concise report rather than several incomplete messages. Include:
- Your Windows version and whether the installation is 64-bit.
- CPU model, GPU model, installed RAM, and free storage.
- Graphics-driver vendor and exact driver version before and after any reinstall.
- The failure stage: immediate exit, black screen, menu launch, or map loading.
- The mission, map, or save that triggers the problem, and whether a new mission behaves differently.
- Whether Steam downloaded a patch and what file verification reported.
- Whether overlays, mods, and injectors were disabled during the clean test.
- Whether the AMD clean-reinstall procedure was attempted, if applicable, and what changed.
Describe the sequence in time order and attach any crash dialog or log that Steam or Windows provides. This gives support reproducible conditions instead of a generic startup complaint.
What can and cannot be concluded
The evidence supports a practical order of operations: meet the 64-bit Windows requirements, bring the graphics driver and Steam build up to date, verify files, and isolate injected software.
