Rather than a single seamless open world, the game is planned as a connected set of handcrafted regions in the Phantom World and its martial underworld, the Wulin.
S-GAME has announced a large, configurable weapon system, three difficulty experiences with different enemy behavior, and versions for PlayStation 5 and PC. The general release date is October 29, 2026, although PlayStation and Steam display October 28 for the United States and some other regions.

What is Phantom Blade Zero?
Phantom Blade Zero is a dark wuxia action RPG from S-GAME, the studio behind the Rainblood series. It is set in the Phantom World, a setting where Chinese martial-arts traditions meet occult forces, industrial machinery and punk-fantasy imagery. Soulframe Liang, S-GAME’s founder and CEO, described the project as “the spiritual rebirth of the original Rainblood” in a developer-authored overview published in 2023.
The game’s own shorthand for this combination is Kungfupunk. That label covers wuxia storytelling, kung fu cinema, mechanical prosthetics, strange machines, ruined industrial spaces, Chinese visual design and rock music. It is not a historical re-creation of China and is not presented as a conventional medieval fantasy world; its identity comes from putting martial-arts drama and fantastical technology in the same setting.

What is the story?
Soul’s 66-day deadline
Soul serves the Order as an assassin. After being framed for murdering his master, he is left gravely wounded. A temporary cure keeps him alive, but only for 66 days. He must use that limited time to discover who engineered the betrayal, find a permanent way to survive and prevent the conspiracy from threatening the wider martial world.
The 66-day figure is a story rule, not a real-world countdown or a claim about the game’s total playtime. It gives the plot a fixed sense of urgency while leaving the player to investigate the Order, its enemies and the wider Wulin.
A conspiracy inside the Wulin
The official premise places the central mystery in the martial underworld known as the Wulin. Soul’s investigation is therefore larger than a personal search for revenge: the conspiracy has consequences for rival factions and the balance of power across the martial world. Exactly how much of the plot is linear and how much can be influenced by player choices has not been fully specified.

Those interactions suggest that exploration and optional encounters will contribute context rather than serving only as combat diversions.
Is Phantom Blade Zero open world?
Not in the usual single-map sense. In 2023, Liang described the game as a “semi-open world” made from multiple reasonably sized, handcrafted maps. A later August 2026 Epic Games Store report on the official deep dive describes the newer structure as eight nonlinear, connected regions.
These descriptions can be reconciled as a connected, handcrafted world rather than one seamless open map. The regions are linked, but the public information does not establish that players can cross the entire game without loading transitions or other boundaries. Each area is intended to support exploration, combat and secrets without the scale and procedural sprawl associated with many large open-world games.

What the regions contain
Epic’s account names several examples of the environments players will encounter:
- Valleys occupied by bandits.
- An abandoned warehouse containing dangling puppets.
- Imposing towers that dominate their surroundings.
- Lakes that can be navigated by speedboat.
The eight regions are described as containing secrets, enemies, side quests, rare treasures and clues. Their nonlinear layout should let players investigate optional routes and return to places with new information or equipment, although the exact progression rules have not been detailed.
How combat is expected to work
A broad weapon roster
PlayStation’s 2026 deep-dive report says players will unlock more than 30 main weapons and 25 secondary weapons called Phantom Edges. The announced roster is intended to support different attack ranges, rhythms and tactical approaches rather than a single permanently equipped moveset.
Named examples include the Drunken Sword; the twin weapons White Serpent and Crimson Viper; the flexible Soft Snake Sword; iron fists; the Tiger Cannon; and Flaming Mane. The descriptions identify a mix of conventional blades, paired weapons, hand-to-hand attacks and ranged or unusual tools. Summons and ranged options have also been mentioned, but their exact resource costs and controls remain unconfirmed.
Upgrades, accessories and reforging
Weapons can be upgraded and paired with accessories. S-GAME also says equipment can be reforged so that upgrade materials are recovered and reinvested. That system should make experimentation less risky: a player can try a different weapon configuration without permanently losing every material spent on an earlier build.
Some enemy defeats will expand the available arsenal. The public descriptions do not specify whether every weapon comes from a particular boss, whether the unlocks are missable or how many weapons can be carried at once. A skill tree is also planned, with upgrades that unlock weapon forms and techniques.

Hand-authored martial-arts animation
Liang wrote in 2023 that important combat moves needed handcrafted animation because motion capture alone could not do them justice. The current PlayStation product description also refers to martial-arts choreography and motion capture. These statements are compatible: the game can combine hand-authored animation for stylized or mechanically precise attacks with motion-captured movement and performances elsewhere. They should not be read as evidence that the game uses no motion capture.
S-GAME has said that Donnie Yen is a creative consultant and performs the character Mó Yuan using facial and motion capture. He is not identified as the director, as Soul’s performer or as the sole creator of the combat system.
How the three difficulty experiences differ
The announced modes are named Wayfarer, Hellwalker and Sixty-Six Days. They are presented as distinct experiences rather than simple damage multipliers.

The Sixty-Six Days rule turns failure into a narrative resource cost, while Hellwalker emphasizes opponents that respond to repeated habits. The sources do not state whether difficulty can be changed freely after starting, whether the countdown can reach a fail state before the story ends or whether any mode changes the number of regions and quests.
What is the Phantom World like?
The Phantom World combines the social and dramatic conventions of wuxia with occult arts and machinery. The Wulin is its martial underworld: a network of organizations, fighters, citizens and hidden interests rather than a single kingdom with one central capital.
Industrial ruins and mechanical devices sit beside traditional martial imagery. Prosthetics and elaborate machines support the “punk” side of Kungfupunk, while supernatural forces and occult practices supply the “phantom” element. The setting’s contrast is deliberate: a sword fight can take place in a ruined industrial site, beside machinery or on a lake reached by speedboat.

Environmental storytelling is expected to matter. The announced secrets, clues and side quests provide ways to learn about the Wulin outside the main assassination plot. Because the regions are handcrafted and nonlinear, the order in which a player finds those details may shape their understanding of rival groups and the conspiracy.

S-GAME’s June 2, 2026 letter moved the release from September 9 to October 29, 2026. Liang said the additional 50 days were intended for work on character models, environments and launch polish.

The safest interpretation is that October 29 is the general date, with October 28 applying to certain regional storefront calendars. Check the date shown for your account and region when preloading or purchasing.
The announced platforms are PlayStation 5 and PC through Steam. The reviewed announcements do not confirm a PlayStation 4 or Xbox version.

Controller and accessibility features
PlayStation lists DualSense adaptive triggers, haptic feedback and Tempest 3D Audio support. It also lists adjustable difficulty, the ability to pause while offline and manual saves. These features address both immersion and practical play: adjustable difficulty lets players select among the announced challenge levels, while offline pausing and manual saves are useful for players who do not want an always-online session structure.

Deluxe Edition contents
The PlayStation Deluxe Edition listing includes exclusive character appearances, a digital artbook and a digital soundtrack. “Digital” matters here: the announced contents are downloads or in-game items, not physical books, discs or CDs.
No confirmed physical PS5 disc edition or licensed physical merchandise has been announced in the reviewed material. Retail availability and any later physical products may change, so buyers should verify the final listing before ordering.
Store-specific Fortnite bonus
Epic Games Store’s August 2026 deep-dive article reports a pre-purchase Soul Outfit for Fortnite as a gift-with-purchase on that store. It is a digital, store-specific promotion, not a Phantom Blade Zero physical collectible or a gameplay weapon. Terms, regions and availability can change, so the current Epic Games Store listing should be checked before purchase.

What is still unknown
Several practical details remain unconfirmed before launch:
- The final price and whether pricing will vary by region or edition.
- Whether PS5 and PC versions will support cross-save, cross-play or shared progression.
- How long the main story takes and how the 66-day rule affects the ending.
- Whether difficulty can be changed mid-playthrough and how deaths are handled outside Sixty-Six Days.
- The exact release schedule for patches, accessibility options beyond those listed and PC system requirements.
- Whether a physical PS5 edition or licensed merchandise will be offered.
These are publication and purchasing questions, not evidence that the announced systems have been canceled. They simply have not been specified in the available official descriptions.
Who should watch Phantom Blade Zero?
The game is most clearly aimed at players who want cinematic wuxia combat, a weapon-focused action system and a world that rewards investigation without becoming a conventional open-world checklist. The weapon count and reforging system should appeal to players who enjoy testing builds. Wayfarer provides a lower-pressure entry point, while Hellwalker and Sixty-Six Days target players who want opponents and failure rules to demand more adaptation.
Players expecting a continuous map comparable to a giant open-world RPG should set a different expectation: the announced design is eight connected, nonlinear regions. Likewise, anyone buying a Deluxe Edition should understand that its artbook and soundtrack are digital, and anyone counting on a physical release should wait for a specific announcement rather than assume one exists.
