Devil May Cry has the deeper proven ceiling for combo expression. Its playable characters combine launchers, air routes, weapon chaining, real-time style switching and style-ranked performance into a system with an unusually large vocabulary of actions. Phantom Blade Zero is aiming at a different kind of depth: reactive martial-arts duels built around reading enemy attacks, choosing between dodges and parries, and exploiting weapon-specific properties.

That makes this an evidence-based preview rather than a final verdict on Phantom Blade Zero, which is still pre-release. If “deeper” means more ways to build and improvise long combos, choose Devil May Cry. If it means timing, defensive reads and the physical feel of weapon clashes, Phantom Blade Zero is the more intriguing prospect.

What “deeper combat” means in this comparison

Action-game depth is not one measurement. A system can be deep because it offers a huge number of offensive routes, because it asks you to read opponents under pressure, because weapons change your decisions, or because a demanding mode gives you a reason to keep refining execution. Comparing these games fairly requires separating those forms of depth instead of treating visual spectacle as proof of mechanical complexity.

  • Combo expression: how many ways you can launch, juggle, cancel, switch weapons and route attacks.
  • Defensive decision-making: how much the game asks you to identify an attack and select a timed response.
  • Weapon and build identity: whether changing equipment changes your available techniques and priorities.
  • Character variety: whether different playable characters demand genuinely different approaches.
  • Mastery structure: whether repeatable challenges support practice after the basic campaign is complete.

On those axes, the games are not trying to win in exactly the same way. Devil May Cry is primarily an offensive expression system with defensive tools. Phantom Blade Zero foregrounds a duel-like loop in which recognizing an attack and answering it correctly is central.

What Phantom Blade Zero is building

A kung-fu-first combat identity

The developers have described the combat as kung-fu first. In an Epic Games Store interview, the team pointed to motion capture and to flashy action games, including Devil May Cry and Ninja Gaiden, as inspirations. Combat director Qianli Ma stated the priority directly: “The core thing is to bring out the Chinese martial art.”

That goal changes what the animations are doing. The weapon demonstrations are not merely visual flourishes; they are intended to communicate a martial-arts style through stance, timing, impact and transitions. PlayStation’s PS5 product information also emphasizes blocking, weapon clashes and haptic impact, with selectable challenge levels for players who want a different degree of pressure.

Defense is an active reading exercise

The clearest hands-on evidence comes from a PC Gamer preview of the demo. Special enemy attacks use color coding to signal the response the player should consider: dodge or parry. The system also includes weapon-specific parries, so the defensive answer is not necessarily identical across the arsenal. This creates a decision loop that starts before contact: identify the cue, understand the attack’s timing, and choose the response that fits your weapon and position.

A separate interview with the combat team describes the Hellwalker difficulty in similar terms. Enemies change their behavior and use more deception, while the parry window is tightened only slightly. The implication is important: the mode increases difficulty substantially through opponent reading and uncertainty, not simply by reducing the timing window to an almost impossible input.

Weapons are meant to alter technique

PlayStation’s coverage highlights a range of weapons, ways to customize a combat setup and the ability to express a personal style. The previewed demo weapons had distinctive properties and elaborate animations. Weapon choice therefore appears to affect more than damage values; it can change which parries are available, how a charge mechanic is used and how you approach an enemy’s special attacks.

This is a different kind of variety from swapping among several characters. Current material centers on Soul, so the identity comes from the setup you build around that character rather than from selecting a roster with entirely separate control schemes. The practical question for the finished game will be how many of those setups produce genuinely different decisions rather than merely different animations.

The current moveset evidence is more curated

The same PC Gamer preview provides the main limitation in the comparison. The demo’s weapons offered distinctive properties and elaborate animations, but each had only a handful of normal and heavy combos. That is a much more curated moveset than the dozens of granular routes found in Capcom or Platinum character-action games.

“Fewer combos” does not automatically mean “shallow.” A compact moveset can be deep when enemies force you to select the right response, and when each weapon changes the timing and spacing of a duel. It does mean that Phantom Blade Zero currently shows less evidence of the open-ended cancel, launcher and air-combo laboratory that defines high-level Devil May Cry play.

Difficulty is designed around behavior, not only execution

Selectable challenge levels are part of the official PlayStation presentation, and Hellwalker is the most informative example so far. Its enemies behave differently and attempt more deception; the parry window is only somewhat narrower. That design can make a fight harder without turning every mistake into a failure of raw reflexes.

For players who enjoy studying attack patterns, this may be the game’s strongest depth signal. A boss that changes its cues or delays an expected strike asks you to maintain attention and update your read. The finished release still needs to show how consistently that behavior appears across enemy types and whether advanced modes add new tactical layers beyond deception.

What Devil May Cry already offers

Offense is the central expression system

Capcom presents Devil May Cry as stylish action: the objective is not merely to survive, but to dispatch enemies with control and flair. In Devil May Cry 5, Dante combines his classic sword-and-gun setup with real-time style switching. Nero uses disposable Devil Breaker arms, and V fights through a distinctly different approach. These are not cosmetic loadouts; each character changes how you begin, extend and finish an attack sequence.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The result is a large offensive vocabulary. Launchers can move an enemy into the air, air routes let you continue pressure away from the ground, and weapon changes let you alter the timing or purpose of the next hit. Players can practice a route that is safe and repeatable, or improvise when an enemy is positioned differently. The system rewards both planning and moment-to-moment adaptation.

Four style functions explain the series’ layered design

The official Devil May Cry 4 manual is a useful foundation for understanding Dante’s style structure:

  • Trickster: high-speed evasive movement.
  • Swordmaster: close-range weapon techniques.
  • Gunslinger: ranged attacks.
  • Royalguard: countering enemy attacks.

Devil May Cry 5 expands the character and weapon toolkits beyond that foundation, but the four functions show why style switching creates so many decisions. You can use movement to reposition, add a weapon-specific technique, maintain pressure from range or deliberately wait for a counter. Switching in real time means those choices can happen inside a single encounter rather than being locked to a pre-fight loadout.

Different characters multiply the learning curve

Devil May Cry 5’s three playable approaches—Nero, Dante and V—give the game a form of depth that a single-character system cannot replicate in the same way. Nero’s Devil Breaker arms are disposable tools with their own functions. Dante carries a broad collection of weapons and styles. V’s combat approach is distinct from direct sword-and-gun fighting. Learning one character does not teach you every answer for the others; it gives you another combat language to master.

That variety also changes how you interpret the word “depth.” A player who wants one perfectly tuned moveset may prefer concentrating on a single character. A player who measures depth by the number of advanced systems to learn will find the multi-character structure much larger.

Style ranking turns expression into a performance loop

Devil May Cry does not only ask whether an attack defeated an enemy. Its style-ranking loop encourages variety, timing and sustained control. Repeating the same safe move is less satisfying than combining different tools without taking damage or breaking momentum. That ranking gives advanced players an internal score to improve even after they know the basic encounters.

The defensive side is still present. Evasion, counters and Royalguard-style responses can be essential, especially when an enemy interrupts a preferred offensive route. But the game’s structure is organized primarily around making the player express control through attacks, movement and switches.

Bloody Palace supplies an established practice space

Devil May Cry 5 Special Edition includes Bloody Palace, a repeatable combat challenge mode. For mastery-focused players, that matters because it provides a dedicated place to test routes, character choices and consistency against sustained encounters rather than treating the campaign as the only measure of improvement.

Phantom Blade Zero’s final endgame and challenge structure have not been confirmed in the material available here. It may eventually offer an equally strong practice loop, but that cannot be counted as an established advantage before release.

Head-to-head: where each game is deeper

Axis Phantom Blade Zero Devil May Cry What that means for players
Combo expression A handful of normal and heavy combos were shown in the demo, with curated, animation-led routes. Style switching, launchers, air routes, weapon chaining and character-specific toolkits create many granular routes. Devil May Cry has the stronger proven ceiling for improvisational combos.
Defensive skill Color-coded attacks, dodge/parry reads, weapon-specific parries and charge mechanics are foregrounded. Evasion and counters matter, including Royalguard’s counter-focused role, but offense and style rank organize the experience. Phantom Blade Zero places more of the moment-to-moment burden on reading attacks.
Weapon and setup identity Weapons have distinctive properties, techniques, upgrades and setup choices. Weapons and styles are differentiated across characters, with Dante offering a particularly broad toolkit. Both offer identity; Phantom Blade Zero ties it to one character’s martial-arts setup, while Devil May Cry spreads it across characters and styles.
Character variety Current material centers on Soul. Devil May Cry 5 features Nero, Dante and V with radically different approaches. Devil May Cry offers more established control-scheme variety.
Repeatable mastery Final endgame and challenge structure remain subject to release confirmation. Bloody Palace is an established repeatable combat challenge in Devil May Cry 5 Special Edition. Devil May Cry currently has the clearer long-term practice framework.

Combo depth: why Devil May Cry leads

The strongest case for Devil May Cry is not simply that it has more moves listed in a menu. Its systems interact. A launcher changes the enemy’s position; an air route keeps the sequence going; a style switch supplies movement, a ranged option or a counter; a weapon swap changes the next timing; and the style rank rewards maintaining variety. Each layer can be learned independently, then combined into a route that is specific to the character, enemy and player’s preferred risk level.

That structure supports several kinds of self-imposed challenge. You can look for the most damaging route, the safest route, a no-hit sequence, a stylish sequence that keeps the rank high, or a route that uses a particular weapon combination. Because characters are so different, the learning process continues even after you understand the broad rules.

The previewed Phantom Blade Zero combat is more constrained in this specific dimension. A small number of normal and heavy strings can still be meaningful if weapon properties and enemy reactions make the choice consequential, but the evidence does not yet show the same density of cancels, launchers and air routes. For a player who spends hours in training mode inventing combos, that distinction is decisive.

Reactive defense: where Phantom Blade Zero may feel deeper

Phantom Blade Zero’s design puts the opponent’s signal at the center of the exchange. Color-coded special attacks ask you to recognize the threat and choose dodge or parry. Weapon-specific parries mean that your equipment can alter the defensive conversation. Charge mechanics add another timing question: do you prepare a stronger action, interrupt the plan to defend, or wait for a better opening?

Hellwalker’s reported behavior changes reinforce this identity. If enemies deceive, delay or alter their patterns while the parry timing remains only slightly tighter, success depends on updating your interpretation rather than memorizing one fixed response. That can produce a duel-like intensity even when the move list is smaller.

Devil May Cry certainly supports defense. Trickster emphasizes evasive movement, Royalguard is explicitly built around countering attacks, and every character must avoid interruption to maintain pressure. The difference is emphasis. Its most celebrated mastery loop asks how creatively and cleanly you can attack; Phantom Blade Zero appears to ask first whether you can read the incoming attack correctly.

Weapon and build identity are different kinds of variety

In Phantom Blade Zero, official PlayStation material describes ways to customize a combat setup and express a personal style. The previewed weapons have distinct properties, techniques and animations, and the defensive system can change with the weapon. That combination suggests a build decision with immediate combat consequences: your chosen equipment may determine which parries, charges and follow-ups are available.

Devil May Cry distributes variety differently. Nero’s Devil Breaker arms, Dante’s weapons and styles, and V’s separate combat approach each define a toolkit. The player is not only selecting a weapon; they are choosing among characters whose movement, range and resource decisions differ. Dante’s style switching makes that variety usable during an encounter rather than only between missions.

Neither approach is automatically deeper. The key question is whether a change forces a new decision. If a Phantom Blade Zero weapon changes the timing of a parry or the answer to a colored attack, it contributes to tactical depth. If a Devil May Cry style switch opens a new route or lets you escape a dangerous position, it contributes to expressive depth.

Character variety and the cost of learning

The current Phantom Blade Zero material is centered on Soul. That focus can be an advantage for players who want one coherent martial-arts system to refine. Designers can make weapon choices, enemy cues and parry interactions reinforce the same central identity instead of teaching several unrelated control schemes.

Devil May Cry 5 asks for a broader investment. Nero, Dante and V have radically different approaches, so mastering the game means learning more than one way to solve an encounter. The reward is a wider range of expression; the cost is that a player may need substantially longer to become fluent across the roster.

For comparison purposes, this is why Devil May Cry wins the breadth test even before counting every individual move. Its depth is multiplied horizontally by characters and vertically by the interactions inside each toolkit.

What remains unproven about Phantom Blade Zero

The preview evidence is useful but bounded. It covers a demo with a limited number of weapons and combos, not the complete release. The final number of techniques, the extent of upgrades, the full enemy roster and the structure of late-game challenges are not established by the material available here.

That uncertainty should not be mistaken for a negative result. It simply sets the correct standard for the comparison. The game can already be described confidently as a promising reactive action system with strong martial-arts presentation. It cannot yet be described as having a larger combo laboratory than Devil May Cry, because the demonstrated movesets do not support that conclusion.

Which game should you choose?

Choose Devil May Cry if you want combo invention

  • You want the largest tested vocabulary of launchers, air routes, cancels, weapon swaps and style changes.
  • You enjoy switching among characters with fundamentally different combat approaches.
  • You like a performance grade that rewards variety, control and sustained offense.
  • You want an established repeatable challenge in Bloody Palace for practicing advanced play.

This is the safer choice for players who define depth as the number of ways they can express mastery through offense. The system has already demonstrated its ceiling in a released game rather than in a preview.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose Phantom Blade Zero if you want timing and opponent reads

  • You prefer a single-character martial-arts identity centered on Soul.
  • You enjoy identifying attack cues and deciding between a dodge and a parry.
  • You want weapons to change defensive interactions, charge timing and technique selection.
  • You find enemy deception and behavior changes more interesting than extremely tight input windows.

This is the more appealing choice if your definition of depth begins with the neutral game: watching an opponent, recognizing the threat and answering with the correct defensive action. Its ultimate breadth remains a release question, but the design direction is clear.

A practical checklist for judging Phantom Blade Zero at release

When the finished game is available, these are the questions that will determine whether its promising reactive depth grows into a deeper overall combat system:

  1. How many meaningful routes does each weapon have? Look beyond the number of animations. Check whether attacks can be linked, canceled, charged or redirected in ways that change your decisions.
  2. Do weapons alter defense as well as offense? The important test is whether weapon-specific parries and properties change how you read enemy attacks.
  3. How often do enemies use deception? Hellwalker’s reported behavior changes are significant only if different enemy types consistently challenge prediction rather than repeating one trick.
  4. Does the game offer a durable practice loop? A repeatable challenge mode, demanding rematches or another structured way to test execution would show whether the combat is designed for long-term mastery.
  5. Does customization create trade-offs? A setup is deeper when choosing one technique, upgrade or weapon property closes off another useful option or changes your risk profile.
  6. Does the final game expand beyond the demo’s curated strings? The central comparison with Devil May Cry will turn on whether the release adds enough launch, air, cancel and weapon-interaction possibilities to support improvisational combo play.

Final verdict

Devil May Cry is the answer to the question as most action-game players use it: it has the deeper proven ceiling for combo expression. Real-time style switching, multiple characters, large weapon and tool kits, launchers, air routes and style ranking create more ways to build and refine an attack sequence than the previewed Phantom Blade Zero movesets currently demonstrate.

Phantom Blade Zero has a credible alternative definition of depth. Its color-coded attacks, dodge-and-parry reads, weapon-specific defenses, charge mechanics and behavior-focused Hellwalker difficulty point toward a more reactive martial-arts duel. If that structure expands substantially in the finished game, it could become the better choice for players who value opponent reading and weapon feel over maximal combo vocabulary. For now, the fair conclusion is Devil May Cry for proven combo depth; Phantom Blade Zero for promising reactive-duel depth.
