Phantom Blade Zero uses a read-and-respond action system: you attack, watch an enemy’s commitment, then choose a parry or dodge while switching among markedly different weapons and Phantom Edges. Progression is built around weapon mastery, upgradeable forms, accessories, summons, and difficulty modes that change the pressure on your decisions rather than simply inflating enemy health.
What Phantom Blade Zero’s combat is built around
Phantom Blade Zero is a dark wuxia action game from S-Game scheduled for release in October 2026. The official site lists October 29, while PlayStation lists October 28 in the United States and selected regions, so the date is region-dependent and should be checked again close to launch. The combat information currently available comes from developer presentations and pre-release hands-on reports; controls, balance, and timing can still change.

The central idea is commitment and response. Your character, Soul, has an attack set tied to the equipped weapon, while enemies telegraph attacks that you must answer with positioning or a defensive move. The system is not presented as a menu-driven RPG where statistics decide every exchange. Your weapon choice, recognition of an incoming strike, and decision to stand your ground or create distance all matter.

S-Game founder and CEO Soulframe Liang described the goal as letting players “shape your combat setup and express your own style of play” in the game’s dark wuxia setting. That statement fits the systems shown so far: a large arsenal, weapon-specific techniques, accessories, summons, and recoverable upgrade materials give you several ways to build Soul without locking you into one permanent path.

Parrying and dodging: choosing the right defense
Parry for a committed close-range answer
A parry is the high-commitment defensive option. You remain in the exchange and attempt to meet an incoming attack at the correct moment. A successful parry can interrupt the opponent’s plan and preserve your position for a counterattack, making it attractive when you understand an enemy’s rhythm or want to maintain pressure.
GamesRadar’s October 2026 hands-on report described the normal-difficulty demo as having “reasonably long” parry windows. That is a reviewer’s observation from a pre-release build, not a guaranteed final timing value or a promise that every enemy uses the same window. Treat it as an indication that the demo was designed to make parrying learnable, not as a universal rule.
Dodge when timing or spacing is uncertain
Dodging trades the possibility of an immediate interruption for movement. It is the safer answer when an attack has unusual reach, when you are outside reliable parry range, or when several enemies make a clean timing read difficult. A dodge can also let you reposition around an opponent, avoid a follow-up, or create enough room to switch from defense to a ranged or area attack.
Use the telegraph, not a memorized chart
Creative Bloq’s preview reports that attacks use color-coded cues indicating which defense to use. The cited passage does not specify the exact color-to-action mapping, so there is no reliable color table to reproduce. Learn the final mapping from the game’s own tutorial or accessibility and control settings rather than relying on an online chart made from a pre-release build.
The practical lesson is to read the cue, identify whether the threat is one you can confidently meet, and select parry or dodge accordingly. Do not assume that every colored signal has the same meaning across all enemies until the released game documents it.
A repeatable combat loop
Although the full enemy roster and control layout have not been published, the demonstrated systems support a clear decision loop:

- Assemble your team of legendary Marvel characters in the ultimate 4v4 tag team fighter from PlayStation Studios, Arc System Works and Marvel Games.
- Experiment with team compositions to discover new combos, synergies, and strategies. Blast your way through dynamic stages based on iconic Marvel Universe locales, some featuring interactive stage transitions.
- Fighting is both immersive and intuitive, with a range of unique move sets, combos, and strategies to master. Adjustable controls, both traditional and quick inputs, plus easy chain combos make diving right in a breeze.
- Face off against a friend locally or join the fray with up to 64 players in the online lobby, including standard VS modes. Plus, dive deep on each team with the single player Episode Mode to learn more about team dynamics and lore.
- Probe the opponent. Use a short attack or safe movement to see how the enemy reacts. Avoid spending your entire offensive sequence before you know whether a counter is coming.
- Read the telegraph. Watch the wind-up, body position, and any color cue. In groups, identify which enemy is actually committing to an attack instead of reacting to every animation.
- Choose the defense. Parry when the timing and range are familiar; dodge when you need space, the strike is difficult to read, or another enemy makes a clean parry unsafe.
- Convert the opening. After a successful defense, use the equipped weapon’s quickest reliable follow-up rather than automatically performing the longest combo. The best response depends on the weapon’s reach and the enemy’s recovery.
- Reposition and reassess. Return to neutral distance, swap tactics, or call on a suitable Phantom Edge or summon if the situation changes.
This loop explains why the game can feel demanding without requiring every encounter to be a damage race. Your improvement comes from recognizing attacks and choosing a response, while progression gives you more tools for expressing that response.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Weapons: more than a single upgrade path
S-Game’s PlayStation deep dive says players can unlock more than 30 main weapons and 25 secondary weapons called Phantom Edges. Those are developer-published counts, not independently audited totals, and the final release could clarify how every item is obtained.
Main weapons change the way Soul fights
Main weapons define the core moveset you use most often. Epic Games Store’s recap of the 20-minute deep dive gives several examples:
- Drunken Sword: lets Soul dodge and weave while building drunken energy, pointing to a style that links evasive movement with a resource or state.
- White Serpent and Crimson Viper: twin blades that combine a long sword with an orbiting blade, suggesting simultaneous control of direct and surrounding threat.
- Soft Snake Sword: coils around other attacks, offering a less conventional trajectory than a straight blade.
- Iron fists: a close-range option focused on strikes rather than blade reach.
- Tiger Cannon: a weapon example that broadens the arsenal beyond standard melee patterns.
- Flaming Mane: another distinct weapon style shown in the recap.
These examples are illustrations, not a complete inventory. The important distinction is that changing weapons is expected to change how you approach openings, spacing, and follow-through, rather than merely replacing one damage number with a larger one.
Phantom Edges add situational tools
Phantom Edges are the secondary-weapon category. GamesRadar’s hands-on report describes using a Phantom Edge axe strike as a damaging attack. That example shows that a Phantom Edge can be an offensive action, not only a passive bonus or emergency item. The complete rules for charges, cooldowns, ammunition, or resource costs have not been enumerated, so evaluate each Edge by its behavior in the released game.

The PlayStation deep dive also identifies summons and accessories as part of the setup. Accessories are presented as a way to create builds, while summons provide another layer of combat support. The available material does not list every accessory effect, summon, slot limit, or upgrade cost; those details should be confirmed in the in-game menus and final documentation.

Progression: mastery, forms, and reversible investment
Skill tree and weapon techniques
Epic’s recap says a skill tree improves mastery and that weapon upgrades unlock forms and techniques. This points to progression that is partly weapon-specific: investing in a weapon can reveal new ways to attack, not just raise a general character level. A player who prefers a mobile blade, fists, or a heavier tool can therefore pursue a different set of combat options.
Reforge supports experimentation
The PlayStation deep dive describes a reforge option that returns upgrade materials so they can be invested in another weapon. That makes experimentation less punishing than spending materials permanently with no recovery. The sources do not specify whether reforge has a fee, a cooldown, a level requirement, or any restriction on which materials are returned, so do not assume that every cost is fully refundable.
A sensible approach is to keep one familiar weapon developed for learning encounters, then use recovered materials to test a second weapon when its moveset addresses a problem your current setup cannot solve. Because the exact reset economy is not yet documented, avoid exhausting every material before you understand the reforge menu.
Combat and exploration feed each other
The official PlayStation post says some defeated enemies expand the arsenal and that side quests may open new story paths. Progression therefore is not limited to a straight sequence of mandatory fights. Exploring optional content can affect both narrative routes and the tools available in later battles, although the complete unlock order has not been published.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Difficulty modes and what they change
S-Game describes three named experiences, and Epic’s recap adds context for the most unusual one:
| Mode | Designed experience | Pressure described by the sources |
|---|---|---|
| Wayfarer | For players who want to enjoy the story | Story-oriented presentation rather than a stated focus on maximum combat difficulty |
| Hellwalker | A challenge mode | More advanced and adaptive enemy intelligence |
| Sixty-Six Days | A demanding option tied to Soul’s story premise | Soul has 66 days to live; each death removes one day |
These descriptions imply different pressures, not simply a slider that gives enemies more health. Hellwalker emphasizes opponents that react more intelligently, while Sixty-Six Days adds a death-linked clock to the fiction and the run itself. Wayfarer is framed as a way to prioritize the story. The final game should be consulted for whether modes can be changed after starting, how deaths are counted, and what rewards or restrictions each mode applies.

How to choose a starting setup
If you are learning the defense system
Begin with a weapon whose attacks you can read easily, keep your combos short, and spend early encounters practicing the difference between a parry attempt and a retreating dodge. A forgiving parry window reported in one demo does not remove the need to learn enemy-specific timing, so use repeated encounters to build recognition rather than mashing the defense button.
Recommended Free Tools
If you prefer movement and improvisation
Investigate weapons whose behavior rewards repositioning, such as the Drunken Sword’s dodge-and-weave identity, then pair them with a Phantom Edge that covers a weakness in your range or burst damage. The exact synergy depends on the final effects and costs, which are not fully listed yet.
If you want to optimize a build
Use the skill tree and accessories to reinforce a defined role, but keep enough materials available to test alternatives. The reforge system is specifically described as a way to recover upgrade materials for another weapon, making controlled experimentation part of the intended progression.
If you want the narrative first
Wayfarer is the mode S-Game positions for story-focused play. You can still engage with weapons, side quests, and the wider arsenal; the mode description does not say that those systems are removed.
