First identify the program that raised the error, record the complete message and path, and determine whether the application actually expects pg.dll or a PostgreSQL component such as libpq.dll. Then repair or reinstall that application with its matching, official installer.
libpq.dll is the PostgreSQL client library documented for Windows. The cited PostgreSQL documentation does not establish pg.dll as a standard Windows system file. A “specified module could not be found” message can also mean that the named DLL exists but one of its dependent modules, or the correct architecture and version, is unavailable.

What the pg.dll error means
A Windows loader error appears when an executable cannot resolve a required dynamic-link library (DLL). The dialog may say that pg.dll is missing, was not found, could not be located, or that “the specified module could not be found.” These messages are related but not identical:
- Missing or not found: the loader did not find a file with the requested name in the locations it searched.
- Specified module could not be found: the named file may be present, but another DLL that it imports is absent or incompatible.
- Bad image or entry point: the file may belong to a different release, CPU architecture, or application than the one loading it.
Windows searches the application directory and other configured locations such as the system PATH. A wrong install directory, a stale or incomplete upgrade, a 32-bit/64-bit mismatch, a PostgreSQL major-version mismatch, or a missing dependent module can therefore produce the same-looking dialog.

pg.dll versus libpq.dll
Before changing anything, establish ownership. PostgreSQL’s Windows documentation identifies libpq.dll as the client library and says it should normally be placed beside the application executable. It does not describe pg.dll as a standard Windows component. That leaves several possibilities:
- The program is PostgreSQL-related but bundles or renames a component internally.
- A connector, language binding, database utility, or developer tool expects a file supplied by its own installer.
- The error belongs to an unrelated application that happens to use the short name
pg.dll. - The application is looking for
libpq.dll, but its message, wrapper, or launcher reports a different filename.
Do not infer ownership from the filename alone. The executable that fails, its installation path, and the exact error text determine the correct repair.
Capture the failure before repairing files
Write down the evidence while the error is visible. This prevents a plausible but incorrect DLL from being copied into a location that affects other programs.
- Copy the complete dialog text. Note whether it says “missing,” “not found,” “unable to start,” or “specified module could not be found.” Record punctuation and capitalization because installers and support teams use the exact wording to identify the failing loader step.
- Record the program name and version. Include the launcher, plug-in host, database tool, game, script runtime, or service that was starting when the dialog appeared.
- Record every path shown. A path such as
C:Program Files..., a temporary folder, or a project directory often reveals which installation is being used. - Record Windows details. Note whether the machine runs Windows 11 or Windows 10, its edition and build, and whether the operating system and application are 32-bit or 64-bit.
- Note the trigger. State whether the problem began after an update, uninstall, driver change, migration, antivirus quarantine, or a new application installation.
If the dialog appears only for one program, treat it as an application repair first. If many unrelated programs fail with DLL errors, investigate Windows component corruption after checking the affected paths.

Manual repair procedure
1. Establish which application owns the DLL
Open File Explorer and inspect the failing program’s installation folder. Look in folders commonly named bin, lib, plugins, or runtime. Search that folder for pg.dll and libpq.dll; do not search only WindowsSystem32. Read the program’s own documentation or release notes for the exact filename and supported PostgreSQL major version.
For PostgreSQL, pgAdmin, a database connector, or a developer tool, compare the files in the installation’s bin and lib directories with the files expected by that exact release. A connector compiled for one major PostgreSQL release may not work with a library from another release even when the filenames look similar.
2. Repair the owning application
Use the application’s installed-package repair option before replacing individual files:

- On Windows 11, open Settings > Apps > Installed apps. Find the affected application, select the three-dot menu, and choose Advanced options if it is available. Use Repair or Reset only when the application’s documentation explains what each option changes.
- On Windows 10, open Settings > Apps > Apps & features, select the application, choose Advanced options, and use Repair when offered.
- If the package has no Windows repair button, run its original installer and choose Repair, Modify, or an equivalent option. If no repair mode exists, uninstall it and install the same supported release again.
- Restart Windows and test the same action that produced the error. Confirm that the program now loads the DLL from its own installation directory rather than from an unrelated folder.
For PostgreSQL software, use the official Windows distribution or the original vendor installer for the matching major version. PostgreSQL states: “It is recommended that most users download the binary distribution for Windows, available as a graphical installer package from the PostgreSQL website at https://www.postgresql.org/download/.” Select the release and architecture that match the application; do not combine files from separate major versions.

3. Check application-local placement
The normal location for libpq.dll is beside the executable that loads it. If an installer placed the DLL in a different directory, the application may never find it. Restore the application using its installer instead of manually copying the file. PostgreSQL documentation specifically advises placing libpq.dll in the same directory as the application executable and warns against putting it in Windows, System, or System32 unless absolutely necessary.
If the program is portable, launched from a script, or moved between machines, check the working directory and the path used by its shortcut. A shortcut can point to an old copy after an upgrade, while a script can set a different working directory or PATH than the desktop launcher.
4. Verify PATH and dependent modules
Applications that use a PostgreSQL extension or language binding may need the PostgreSQL distribution directory on PATH. PostgreSQL’s Windows guidance notes that language DLLs require their distribution DLLs to be present in the system PATH and recommends dependency inspection to identify missing imports.

- Review the user and system
Pathentries. Look for the correct PostgreSQLbindirectory or the directory documented by the application. - Remove stale entries only when you can identify the installation they belong to. Do not delete entries blindly; other software may depend on them.
- Close and reopen the application after changing
PATH. Programs that were already running do not automatically receive the new environment. - Use a reputable dependency-inspection utility recommended by the application vendor or PostgreSQL community to identify which imported module is absent. Check the reported path, architecture, and required version rather than copying the first file with a matching name.
When a dependency tool reports a missing module, repair the package that supplies that module. A successful search result for pg.dll alone does not prove that the application can load it.

5. Confirm 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
The DLL and every important dependency must match the process architecture. A 32-bit application generally requires 32-bit libraries, even on 64-bit Windows; a 64-bit application requires 64-bit libraries. Check the application’s documentation or installer architecture, then obtain the matching PostgreSQL and connector build. Do not mix a 32-bit libpq.dll with a 64-bit executable, or files compiled for different PostgreSQL major releases.
If you have both 32-bit and 64-bit installations, inspect the full path in the error and the launcher shortcut. The wrong copy may be found first because of PATH order. Correct the installation or environment rather than renaming files to force a load.
6. Repair Windows components only when the symptom is system-wide
Use Windows servicing tools when several unrelated applications show damaged or missing system components, or when an update left Windows itself unstable. Open Command Prompt as administrator by searching for cmd, right-clicking Command Prompt, and selecting Run as administrator. Run these commands in order:

Microsoft’s guidance is explicit: “DISM provides the files required to repair your corrupted files. You should run DISM prior to running the System File Checker.” DISM may take time and can appear to pause at a percentage. Let it finish, restart if requested, and then run SFC. If SFC reports that it could not repair some files, keep the command output for support and return to the application-specific repair path; SFC cannot supply a vendor DLL that was never part of Windows.
7. Roll back a recent change with System Restore
If the error began immediately after an installer, Windows update, driver change, or uninstall, System Restore can return system files, registry settings, and installed programs to an earlier restore point. Personal files are not removed, but applications and settings added after the selected point are undone.
- Press
Win, type Recovery, and open Recovery from Control Panel. - Select Open System Restore, choose a restore point dated before the failure, and select Scan for affected programs to see which applications will be changed.
- Confirm the restore point, save open work, and allow Windows to restart.
- Test the original application. If the error remains, reinstall the owning application rather than repeatedly restoring older points.
8. Escalate with a complete diagnostic packet
When reinstalling the owning application and repairing Windows do not resolve the problem, contact the application’s vendor or the PostgreSQL support community with actionable evidence:
- Complete error text and a screenshot, with personal paths redacted if necessary.
- Application name, exact version, installer source, and installation directory.
- Windows edition and build, process architecture, and PostgreSQL major version.
- The relevant
PATHentries and the dependency-inspection result. - Whether the DLL exists beside the executable and whether the error occurs for every user or only one account.
- The date and action that preceded the failure, such as an update or uninstall.
This information lets support identify a missing package, an incorrect search path, or an incompatible dependency without asking you to overwrite system directories.

Common situations and the correct branch
The error appears when launching one database tool
Capture the tool’s version and path, inspect its own bin or lib folder, and run its repair or matching installer. If it expects PostgreSQL’s client library, verify that the correct libpq.dll is beside the executable or available through the documented PATH. Do not add a similarly named file from another PostgreSQL installation.
A language binding fails after PostgreSQL was upgraded
Check the binding’s supported PostgreSQL major version and architecture. Upgrade or reinstall the binding and its distribution DLLs together, then inspect imports for any missing dependency. A stale PATH entry can cause the binding to load an older library even though a newer installation is present.
The message says “specified module could not be found,” but pg.dll is visible
Assume a dependent module is missing until inspection proves otherwise. Check the dependency report, application architecture, and search order. Repair the package that supplies the missing import; copying another pg.dll will not repair an absent dependency.
Several unrelated programs started failing after an update
Record each error, run DISM first and SFC second, and consider System Restore if a restore point predates the update. If only one program remains affected afterward, return to that vendor’s installer and dependency documentation.
