The result changes with your city, route, vehicle’s real fuel economy, current pump price, transit legs, and the costs you decide to include. A fair comparison uses the same origin and destination, the same commute days, and the same time period for both options.
For driving, divide your round-trip distance by observed kilometres per litre, multiply by a dated local petrol price, and add recurring parking, tolls, and other trip charges. For public transport, add every fare in both directions, including transfers and access or egress rides, then multiply by the same number of commuting days. Keep vehicle ownership costs separate so you can see both the recurring trip cost and the fuller cost of keeping a car.

Start with an apples-to-apples comparison
Write down one commute before collecting prices: the exact origin, destination, usual route, and the days you travel in the period being measured. A daily round trip multiplied by the same number of commute days is the basic unit. If driving and transit use different destinations, different numbers of days, or different date ranges, the totals are not comparable.
Choose the accounting period
Monthly is convenient for a regular job or school schedule, but a four-week period, a term, or an annual view can be more accurate for irregular attendance. Count actual commute days rather than assuming every calendar weekday. Record holidays, remote-work days, leave, exams, and any recurring days when you use another mode.

Fix the route and distance
Measure the distance you actually drive, not a straight-line map distance. If your normal route includes a detour for a passenger, a fuel station, or a toll road, include it. For transit, list each leg separately: walking or cycling access, feeder vehicle, bus or rail segment, transfer, and the final connection. The route used for a cost comparison should be the route you can realistically take on most commute days.
Decide what “cost” means
A fuel-only result answers, “What recurring cash do I spend to make these trips?” A fuller private-vehicle result also allocates maintenance, tyres, insurance, registration, depreciation, financing, parking permits, and similar costs. State the scope in the heading of your worksheet. If you omit ownership costs, call the result a recurring trip-cost comparison rather than the total cost of owning a vehicle.
Collect inputs that match your city and date
Petrol price
Use the price per litre posted for your location on the date represented by the calculation. Record the source, city, station or operator where relevant, and whether the figure is a one-time announcement, a scheduled price, or a price that may change during the period. Do not combine a current fare with an old petrol price without clearly labelling the mismatch.
The Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) reports monthly urban consumer prices across 68 markets in 35 cities. That coverage is useful context for price movement, but it is not a live quotation for your pump or a route-level fare database. Obtain a local price for the actual comparison date.
Observed fuel economy
Use your vehicle’s real kilometres per litre rather than a brochure maximum. The most reliable home estimate is to fill the tank, reset the trip meter, drive through a normal mix of commute conditions, refill at the same level, and divide kilometres travelled by litres added. Repeat over several refills if possible. Keep the result separate for petrol vehicles; a diesel figure cannot be substituted into a petrol calculation.
Public-transport fares
Write the fare for every leg in each direction. Include transfer fares, reload or card charges that are unavoidable, and any feeder or last-mile ride you routinely pay for. If a fare varies by distance, time, vehicle class, or payment method, use the option you actually use and note the rule. A single headline fare for a city can hide the cost of two or three separate legs.

Other recurring charges
For driving, check paid parking at home, work, or a park-and-ride facility; tolls; congestion or entry charges; and regular paid drop-off fees. For transit, include station parking, bicycle storage, or paid access charges when they are part of your normal journey. Do not add optional spending, such as buying food during a wait, unless you would incur it because of that mode and want to analyse it explicitly.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Calculate the petrol-driving cost
Use the following sequence for the selected period:
- Measure one-way distance and multiply by two for the round trip.
- Multiply the round-trip distance by the number of commute days.
- Divide total kilometres by observed kilometres per litre to estimate litres consumed.
- Multiply litres by the local petrol price per litre on the chosen date.
- Add parking, tolls, and other recurring trip charges.
- If you are analysing ownership, add separately allocated fixed costs rather than hiding them in the fuel line.
round_trip_km = one_way_km × 2
total_km = round_trip_km × commute_days
litres_used = total_km ÷ observed_km_per_litre
fuel_cost = litres_used × petrol_price_per_litre
recurring_driving_cost = fuel_cost + parking + tolls + other_trip_charges
This calculation assumes the vehicle is available and is measuring the cost of using it for the commute. If the trip would require a new purchase, a loan, or a second vehicle, those decisions belong in a separate ownership scenario.
Calculate the public-transport cost
Build the transit total from the legs, not from a citywide average. For one direction, add each paid segment and transfer. Double that one-way total for a return journey, then multiply by the same commute-day count used for driving.
one_way_transit_fare = leg_1 + leg_2 + transfer_fares + access_or_egress_fares
round_trip_transit_fare = one_way_transit_fare × 2
period_transit_cost = round_trip_transit_fare × commute_days
If you buy a weekly, monthly, or employer-subsidised pass, convert its price to the selected period and document the validity rules. A pass may cover only certain operators or zones; do not treat an unlimited pass as a universal fare unless it covers every leg in your route. When you occasionally use a ride-hailing or taxi connection because a scheduled service is unavailable, either include the expected cost as a separate scenario or state that the base comparison assumes the scheduled route.
Put both calculations in one worksheet
A side-by-side table makes unequal assumptions visible. Use the same distance and days in both columns and attach the date to every volatile input.

What Pakistan’s dated figures do—and do not—tell you
Fuel and fares can move quickly, so older national figures should never be presented as today’s local prices. Radio Pakistan reported a government-announced petrol price of Rs 458.40 per litre on April 3, 2026, alongside diesel at Rs 520.35 per litre. Those are historical figures from that date, not October 2026 prices and not a substitute for checking your pump. The diesel number matters only if you are modelling a diesel vehicle; it does not belong in a petrol calculation.
On April 4, 2026, the Ministry of Planning, Development and Special Initiatives reported average fare increases of 25–30% across major urban centres after a fuel-price increase, with some routes reporting increases of up to 50%. That report describes a dated change, not a fare schedule for every city or route. Use the actual operator or authority fare for each leg on your chosen comparison date.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsPBS’s monthly collection across 68 urban markets in 35 cities can help explain why a single national average is misleading. It does not establish a matched petrol-and-transit price for your origin and destination, and the available official reports do not establish a universal cheaper mode.
A worked worksheet without pretending to know your local prices
Because no city or route was specified, a responsible example should show the arithmetic without turning an assumed rate into a Pakistan-wide claim. Enter your own values in a spreadsheet using this structure:
| Cell or variable | What to enter |
|---|---|
one_way_km |
Your measured road distance |
commute_days |
Actual days in the selected period |
observed_km_per_litre |
Your measured fuel economy |
petrol_price_per_litre |
Local price and date |
parking_per_day |
Home, workplace, and park-and-ride charges |
tolls_per_day |
All regular tolls in both directions |
transit_leg_1, transit_leg_2 |
Each paid segment in one direction |
transit_access |
Regular feeder or last-mile fares |
total_km = one_way_km × 2 × commute_days
fuel_litres = total_km ÷ observed_km_per_litre
fuel_cost = fuel_litres × petrol_price_per_litre
driving_period_cost = fuel_cost + (parking_per_day + tolls_per_day) × commute_days
transit_period_cost = (transit_leg_1 + transit_leg_2 + transit_access) × 2 × commute_days
difference = driving_period_cost − transit_period_cost
For a route with more legs, continue the leg list rather than averaging it. If a fare is paid only once per day or a pass replaces individual tickets, alter the formula to match the ticket’s actual validity. Keep a notes column containing the source, date, payment method, and any exception days.

When to include ownership costs
Fuel is only one cost of private travel. To estimate a fuller cost, choose an allocation period and divide each recurring or expected annual amount across the same period:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Scheduled maintenance and repairs, using a realistic annual allowance or service history.
- Tyres and consumables, allocated by expected life or replacement interval.
- Insurance, registration, inspection, and permits, allocated monthly or daily.
- Financing interest and unavoidable loan charges, if the vehicle is financed.
- Depreciation or the value lost through use, if you want an economic rather than cash-only comparison.
- Residential or workplace parking permits that do not vary with each trip.
Do not charge the full purchase price to one month. Divide a documented annual or multi-year amount across its useful period, then decide whether to allocate it to all vehicle kilometres or only to the commute. A vehicle used for errands and family trips should not have every ownership cost assigned to commuting unless the purpose of the analysis is specifically to price the commute as if it were the sole use.
Find the break-even point
Break-even analysis shows how sensitive the result is to a changing input. Let the driving cost per day include fuel, parking, tolls, and any daily ownership allocation. Public transport is cheaper when its round-trip daily fare is below that amount.
break_even_transit_daily_fare = driving_daily_cost
break_even_petrol_price = (transit_period_cost − other_driving_costs) ÷ total_litres
You can also test fuel economy. A vehicle that achieves fewer kilometres per litre reaches the same destination with more litres, so its driving line rises even when the pump price is unchanged. Recalculate with realistic city-traffic, air-conditioning, passenger-load, and seasonal conditions rather than relying only on an ideal test figure.
Use scenarios instead of one fragile total
- Low-cost case: the lower verified fare or price that applies consistently during the period, with no exceptional paid connections.
- Typical case: the route and fuel economy you normally experience.
- High-cost case: a fare increase, heavier traffic, paid parking every day, or occasional last-mile rides that you genuinely expect.
Label each scenario with its dates and assumptions. Scenario ranges are more honest than presenting a single number when prices or fares are volatile.
Account for time and reliability without faking a price
Cost is not the only decision variable. Record door-to-door travel time, walking distance, transfer count, service hours, crowding, weather exposure, and how often you miss a connection. These are personal observations unless you have comparable, route-specific data. Do not convert them into a monetary value unless you state the value of your time and apply the same rule to both options.
Best Value
Reliability can also create a real cost: a late arrival may require a taxi, an unpaid absence, or a childcare change. Track those events separately over several weeks. A single bad day should not redefine the typical fare, but a recurring pattern belongs in a high-cost transit scenario.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Using an old petrol price as if it were current
Fix: put the price date beside the number and refresh it for the publication or decision date. The April 3, 2026 petrol figure reported by Radio Pakistan is historical, not an October 2026 quote.
Comparing a one-way drive with a round-trip fare
Fix: calculate both modes for the same return journey and multiply both by the same commute-day count.
Recommended Free Tools
Ignoring transfers and first- or last-mile rides
Fix: list every paid leg in each direction. A headline bus fare is not the total when reaching the stop requires another paid service.
Using brochure fuel economy
Fix: measure kilometres and litres from your own refuelling records across normal traffic conditions.
Mixing fixed and variable costs without explanation
Fix: show a fuel-and-trip subtotal, then a separate ownership-cost allocation. Readers can then see whether the decision changes when depreciation or financing is counted.
Declaring a national winner
Fix: state the city, route, dates, days, vehicle, fuel economy, fares, and included costs. The available official evidence does not support a universal Pakistan-wide winner.

A repeatable update routine
- At the start of each comparison period, record the route, commute days, and current local petrol and fare inputs.
- Keep fuel receipts and odometer readings so observed efficiency can be refreshed after several refills.
- Check whether a transit operator changed its fare, pass rules, zones, or transfer policy.
- Recalculate the fuel-only and full-ownership views separately.
- Save the assumptions with the result so a later month can be compared without silently changing the method.
Decision rule
Choose public transport on cost grounds when its fully counted period fare is lower than the driving total for the same route and days, and the service meets your practical time and reliability needs. Choose driving when its stated cost is lower or when the extra time and transfers make transit unusable for your circumstances. If the totals are close, update the volatile inputs and run the high- and low-cost scenarios before making a long-term commitment.
The defensible answer is therefore local and dated: calculate your own round-trip kilometres, observed fuel economy, current petrol price, every transit leg, recurring charges, and—if desired—allocated ownership costs. Only then does “petrol versus public transport” become a meaningful commuting-cost comparison for Pakistan.
