For most functional PC accessories, choose PETG. It is relatively easy to print, resists warping better than ABS, and provides useful toughness for holders, clips, mounts, brackets, and cable guides. Choose PLA when the part is decorative or lightly loaded and will remain cool. Choose ABS when the accessory must tolerate more heat or mechanical stress and you have a suitable enclosure, reliable warping control, and appropriate ventilation.
The polymer name is only the starting point. The exact filament formulation, printer profile, part geometry, layer orientation, load, airflow, and temperature at the accessory’s location determine whether a printed part remains dimensionally stable and strong.

Quick decision: PETG for function, PLA for cool simplicity, ABS for demanding conditions
| Material | Best PC-accessory uses | Main advantages | Main limitations | Printer and finishing considerations |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| PLA | Decorative desk items, prototypes, light-duty brackets in cool locations | Simple printing and generally clean-looking parts | Be conservative around warm components; thermal performance varies by product | Uses lower nozzle and bed ranges than PETG or ABS; usually does not need an enclosure |
| PETG | Holders, clips, cable guides, brackets, mounts, and general mechanical accessories | Good toughness, low warping, strong layer adhesion, and useful temperature resistance | Can string; bridging and overhangs can be less clean than PLA; may bond too strongly to some sheets | Use a suitable print surface and the spool’s profile; dry filament and tune retraction if stringing appears |
| ABS | Parts exposed to higher heat or greater mechanical demands, especially when a smooth finish is wanted | Technical-part capability, heat and mechanical resistance, and acetone-smoothing potential | Significant warping, fumes, and greater sensitivity to ambient temperature | Heated bed, warm enclosure conditions, and ventilation guidance are important; enclosure heat can affect the printer itself |
Prusa Research describes PETG as commonly used for “various mechanical parts, holders, clamps, and waterproof parts (thanks to great layer adhesion).” Read the manufacturer’s filament material guide and the data sheet for your specific spool before committing to a design.
Start with the accessory’s real environment
Identify where the part will live, not merely which computer component it is near. A cable guide attached to a cool desk is a very different job from a bracket inside a compact case beside a graphics card exhaust.

- Cool, external, lightly loaded: PLA is usually the simplest route.
- External and functional: PETG is the practical default when the part needs toughness or a little flex.
- Inside a warm case or near sustained heat: PETG may work, but verify the exact product data and the expected load. Consider ABS only when your printer and ventilation setup can handle it.
- Repeated flexing or impact: PETG usually offers a better balance than PLA; design and layer orientation still matter.
Do not infer an operating limit from a component’s advertised temperature. Local airflow, contact area, radiant heat, fasteners, and the accessory’s own geometry can make the printed part see a different temperature.
How the three materials differ in practice
PLA: easiest when heat and stress are low
PLA is a strong choice for a desk stand, headphone hook, label, cable comb, mock-up, or decorative case accent that stays away from warm exhaust and direct sunlight. It is generally straightforward to print and Prusa’s guide lists lower recommended nozzle and bed ranges than for PETG or ABS.
Its convenience can hide a design risk: a part that is rigid and successful at room temperature may soften or deform when warmed. Avoid treating PLA as a universal material for internal case brackets, GPU supports, or parts clamped tightly against a heat source. If you need a PLA prototype to become a permanent load-bearing accessory, reassess the material rather than assuming the production part will behave the same way.
PLA is often attractive when surface appearance and dimensional detail matter more than impact toughness. Use generous fillets, avoid thin snap arms, and print a small section first if the part will be loaded. A cool location and modest stress are the conditions under which PLA’s ease is most valuable.

PETG: the general-purpose functional choice
PETG combines relatively easy printing with low warping and useful toughness. It is suitable for holders, clamps, cable guides, brackets, and other mechanical accessories that need more resilience than a purely decorative PLA part. Its layer adhesion can help when a clip or mount experiences modest bending.
PETG is not flawless. It can string, and its bridges and overhangs may look worse than PLA at identical settings. Strong adhesion can damage a smooth print sheet or make a finished part difficult to remove. Prusa’s PETG guidance gives an example profile of 230°C for the first layer and 240°C for later layers, with an 85°C first-layer bed and 90°C for later layers in the referenced context. Those numbers are starting points, not universal settings: use the filament maker’s profile and your printer’s limits.
Choose the print surface deliberately. If the material bonds aggressively to a smooth sheet, use a surface or release method approved for that sheet rather than forcing the part off. Retraction tuning, filament drying, slower travel moves, and adequate cooling can reduce strings, but the correct values depend on the machine and spool.

ABS: capable, but setup-intensive
ABS is intended for technical parts that need more heat or mechanical resistance and can be smoothed with acetone when that finish is appropriate. It can make sense for a case-mounted holder near a hot airflow path or a mechanically stressed component, but only when the printing environment is controlled.

ABS shrinks significantly more than PLA or PETG. Prusa reports a typical shrinkage factor of 1–2% for ABS; treat that as a stated typical value, not a guarantee for every brand, color, geometry, or print. Warping can lift corners, distort hole spacing, and ruin a long bracket before the job finishes.
Prusa recommends a 255°C nozzle and a 100°C bed for ABS, with the bed adjusted within 80–110°C depending on object size. It also recommends an enclosure and warm ambient conditions. An enclosure can itself heat printer components and cause deformation, so follow the printer manufacturer’s compatibility instructions. ABS fumes require attention to the manufacturer’s ventilation guidance; do not assume an enclosure alone makes the setup safe.
Temperature data: useful evidence, not a universal rating
Prusa’s general guide lists these recommended ranges:

|---|---|---|
| PLA | 185–235°C | 50–60°C |

| ABS | 230–255°C | 95–110°C |

Manufacturer heat-deflection figures show why a single “safe temperature” is misleading. Polymaker lists 65°C for one PETG, 78°C for PolyLite PETG, and 76°C for PolyMax PETG in its technical data table. UltiMaker’s Method-series material page lists 70°C for its PETG value and 84°C for its ABS value: Method-series material data.
Heat-deflection temperature is measured under a specified test method and load. It does not promise that a finished PC accessory can carry its design load indefinitely at that temperature. Layer bonding, infill, wall count, orientation, fasteners, geometry, and local airflow all affect the result. Use the number to compare the exact products, then validate the actual part.
Examples: matching common PC accessories to a material
Cable clip, cable comb, or desk stand
Use PLA when the item sits on a cool desk and does not flex repeatedly. Use PETG if the clip must survive repeated insertion, a heavier cable bundle, or occasional knocks. ABS is rarely worth the additional setup for this use unless the accessory is exposed to unusual heat.
GPU-support bracket or case-mounted holder
PETG is usually the first material to evaluate because it combines functional toughness with comparatively low warping. Check the location’s temperature and the load path, and avoid relying on a thin arm printed with layers oriented to split under bending. ABS becomes a conditional option when the measured or expected environment and mechanical demand exceed what the chosen PETG product and design can handle.

Warm, enclosed, or technically demanding part
Consider ABS if you can provide a compatible enclosure, stable bed temperature, warm ambient conditions, and ventilation consistent with the printer and filament instructions. If you cannot control those conditions, redesign for PETG, move the accessory away from the heat source, or use a commercial part rated for the application rather than accepting repeated ABS warping and failed prints.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A repeatable material-selection workflow
- Map the environment. Record whether the accessory is outside the case, inside it, beside an exhaust, or touching a heat-producing component. Note airflow and likely temperature swings.
- Define the load. Estimate the static weight, clamping force, impact, and number of flex cycles. Identify whether failure would merely be inconvenient or could damage hardware.
- Choose a candidate. Start with PETG for functional parts, PLA for cool and low-stress parts, and ABS only when its additional heat or mechanical capability justifies the printing burden.
- Read the exact spool data sheet. Record nozzle and bed recommendations, layer-height guidance, drying requirements, and any stated heat-deflection measurement. Do not substitute a generic internet setting for the product profile.
- Check printer compatibility. Confirm that the hot end, bed, build surface, enclosure, and firmware can safely reach the required settings. For ABS, confirm enclosure and ventilation guidance before printing.
- Orient for the load. Arrange layers so the dominant force is not trying to peel them apart. Add walls, fillets, ribs, and generous radii rather than relying only on infill.
- Print a small test. Test the critical clip, hole, snap arm, or mounting face before committing to a full-size accessory.
- Inspect and validate. Check dimensions, layer bonding, warping, surface damage, fastener fit, and behavior under the expected load. If the part will run warm, test it in that environment before installation.
Material-specific setup notes
PLA setup checklist
- Use the printer’s PLA profile as the starting point and keep the part away from sustained heat.
- Use cooling appropriate to the printer and geometry to preserve bridges and detail.
- For a structural bracket, increase wall count and test the actual orientation instead of assuming higher infill solves every weakness.
PETG setup checklist
- Begin with the spool maker’s profile; Prusa’s example of 230°C first-layer and 240°C later-layer nozzle temperatures, with 85°C and 90°C bed temperatures, is context-specific.
- Use a compatible sheet or release approach because strong adhesion can damage smooth PEI.
- Tune retraction and keep filament dry if strings, blobs, or rough surfaces appear.
- Expect bridges and overhangs to need different cooling or speed than PLA.
ABS setup checklist
- Use a heated bed and an enclosure only when the printer is designed to tolerate the resulting heat.
- Control drafts and temperature changes to reduce corner lift and layer separation.
- Use the manufacturer’s ventilation instructions; fumes are a material and process concern.
- Account for 1–2% typical shrinkage in fit-critical designs, then calibrate with a test part.
- Acetone smoothing changes dimensions and rounds details, so validate holes, clips, and mating surfaces afterward.
Warping, adhesion, and enclosure pitfalls
PLA and PETG generally shrink only a small amount during printing, while ABS is more sensitive to thermal conditions. Prusa’s enclosure guidance cautions that an enclosure is not automatically appropriate for PLA or PETG on every printer. An enclosure that improves ABS stability can overheat a machine or make PLA and PETG behave poorly.
When a corner lifts, first check the bed surface, first-layer calibration, temperature profile, drafts, and part footprint. For ABS, also check ambient warmth and whether the enclosure is maintaining a stable environment. When PETG will not release, do not pry aggressively against a smooth sheet; use the sheet manufacturer’s recommended removal method.

A well-oriented PETG bracket can outperform a poorly oriented ABS bracket. Keep the following in the design review:
- Layer direction: Put the strongest continuous walls along the primary load path.
- Wall thickness: Additional perimeters often improve a clip or bracket more predictably than simply increasing infill.
- Stress concentration: Add fillets at inside corners and around screw holes.
- Fasteners: Avoid crushing thin printed bosses; use washers, heat-set inserts, or a larger contact area where appropriate.
- Clearance: Allow for the exact printer’s dimensional accuracy and, for ABS, greater shrinkage.
- Heat path: Add spacing or a thermal break if the accessory can be moved away from a hot surface.
What to buy and what to verify
For a first functional PC-accessory project, a quality PETG filament matched to your printer is the sensible starting purchase. PLA remains useful for prototypes and cool decorative parts; ABS is an additional material for users who already have a compatible, controlled printing setup.
Before buying any spool, verify the manufacturer’s recommended temperatures, drying instructions, build-surface notes, dimensional or shrinkage information, and any heat-deflection test conditions. A material marketed under the same polymer name can still print and perform differently from another product.
Bottom-line rule
If you are unsure, use PETG for a functional accessory, PLA only when the environment is clearly cool and the load is modest, and ABS only when higher heat or mechanical performance is necessary and your printer can manage the enclosure and ventilation requirements. The safest decision comes from the exact spool profile, the accessory’s measured or expected environment, and a small validation print—not from the polymer label alone.
