Pet Insurance Australia’s Select and Protect policy offers configurable accident-and-illness cover, but the categories named by the insurer are subject to waiting periods, exclusions, benefit limits and the terms of your individual certificate. Before judging whether it fits your pet, check the policy booklet that applies to your issue date and compare quotes with the same excess, reimbursement percentage and optional benefits.
Which Select and Protect policy version applies?
Start with the policy booklet and certificate issued for your own policy. Pet Insurance Australia’s document index says its booklet dated 22 October 2025 applies to new policies purchased on or after that date. Existing policyholders may have different terms based on the original issue date or whether their policy replaced another one. The booklet states: “Your insurer will be different, depending on when your policy was first issued and whether or not it was issued as a replacement policy.” Check the policy-document index and use the version that matches your policy history.

What does Select and Protect cover?
The policy describes accidental injury and illness cover, plus emergency pet boarding. Pet Insurance Australia’s coverage outline identifies categories including specified accidental injuries and illnesses, tick paralysis, cancer treatment, skin conditions, hereditary and congenital conditions, eye and ear conditions, and cruciate ligament conditions. These are covered categories only as defined by the applicable policy; a condition’s name alone does not establish that every consultation, treatment or related expense is payable. Review the insurer’s coverage outline alongside the full PDS and certificate.
Pre-existing conditions, elective treatments and procedures, food and diets, grooming, pregnancy and pet accessories are among the exclusions flagged in the outline. This list is not exhaustive. The policy documents control the definitions, limits and exclusions for a particular claim.

How much can you choose to claim?
Select and Protect lets customers configure three important settings. The options below are those listed by the insurer; the $600 annual excess cannot be paired with a 70% benefit percentage. Check the available options and verify the selections in your quote and certificate.

A higher benefit percentage can increase the share reimbursed on an eligible bill, while a higher excess can increase your out-of-pocket cost when claiming. The right combination depends on the quote, your budget and the expenses you are prepared to carry; the available information does not establish one best setting for every pet.

Optional benefits
The product page lists Routine Care as a non-insurance benefit. It also lists Booster Care for specified dental conditions and specialised therapies, with a stated $2,500 limit for each category. Check the PDS and certificate for the services that qualify and how the limits apply before treating either option as part of your cover. See the product options.
What are the waiting periods?
The insurer publishes these waiting periods for the listed cover and benefits. A condition that exists or occurs during a waiting period may be considered pre-existing and excluded. Confirm waiting-period terms in the version of the policy that applies to you.

A waiver of the cruciate ligament waiting period may be available on application, according to the insurer’s claims information; it is not automatic. Contact the insurer to establish whether an application is available and what applies to your pet.
How do claims work?
Pet Insurance Australia describes four claim routes. Availability and eligibility depend on the claim and, for in-clinic options, the vet’s participation. Check the insurer’s current claim instructions before submitting.

- GapOnly: At a participating vet, an eligible claim can be assessed in-clinic, so the insurer says the assessment happens there.

The claims page says eClaims are typically processed within five business days. It describes GapOnly claims as being assessed in-clinic. These are the insurer’s descriptions, not independent performance findings, and they do not guarantee a particular claim’s outcome or timing.

Pet Insurance Australia reports PetSure data showing 88% of claims processed within one day and 98% within five days after all documentation was received. The figures cover February 2023 to January 2024, as reported by the insurer; they are historical, insurer-reported results, not a promise about a future claim. See the claims statistics.

Historical claim amounts are not payout estimates
The claims page also reports PetSure claims data, inclusive of GST, for June 2022–July 2024. For traumatic injury, the average was $408.50 and the maximum was $20,114.10; for foreign body ingestion, the average was $953.67 and the maximum was $17,955.80; for neoplasia, the average was $912.99 and the maximum was $16,168.56. These are historical claim amounts, not estimates of an individual vet bill or the benefit a particular policyholder would receive. The payable amount depends on eligibility and policy settings.

- Match the policy version. Check the booklet and certificate against the policy’s original issue date and whether it replaced another policy.
- Compare like-for-like quotes. Use the same pet details, annual limit, benefit percentage, excess and optional benefits when comparing alternatives.
- Check your pet’s history and likely needs. Read waiting periods, pre-existing-condition terms and exclusions against known conditions and expected care needs.
- Confirm the exact cover. Verify named treatment categories, benefit limits and optional services in the applicable PDS and certificate.
- Consider claim logistics. Confirm whether your vet participates in GapOnly or eClaims and which submission route you would use otherwise.
