That is the distinction behind the promise of an AI built for one person: not a model that “becomes” its user, but an assistant shaped by selected preferences, past interactions, and data the user chooses to connect.
What makes an AI personal?
A general assistant starts each exchange with broad capabilities. A personal assistant can also use context from earlier conversations, explicit preferences, files, or connected services to tailor its answers. Google described Gemini’s past-chat feature in August 2025 as a way to learn preferences and make responses more personalized over time. That is the company’s description of a feature, not evidence that any assistant reliably understands a person in full. Google’s August 13, 2025 announcement

Personalization can extend beyond chat history. In March 2025, Google announced an experimental Gemini feature that could use Search history with permission and said users could disconnect it. That announcement describes the feature’s state at the time; it does not establish present availability or controls. Google’s March 13, 2025 announcement
For an assistant built around one person, the useful question is not simply “What can it access?” It is “Which specific context helps with the work I actually do, and what authority should the assistant have over it?” A preference for concise summaries may be harmless and helpful to retain. A private document or a sensitive account history calls for a more deliberate choice.

What should it remember?
Useful memory is selective. It might include stable preferences, recurring projects, terminology, or decisions that would otherwise need repeating. A system could also retrieve relevant information from a user’s records when asked. Those are different functions: remembering a preference is not the same as searching a collection of personal documents.
One proposed direction is a user-governed context layer that persists across interactions and can move between tools. Stanford’s Portable Memory project describes this as “portable, persistent personal memory” that can be shared selectively by role, consent, and purpose. A Microsoft Research-hosted position paper similarly argues for user-owned context with granular, revocable control. These are research and design proposals, not proof that portable memory is already a universal or interoperable feature. - Your favorite music and content – Play music, audiobooks, and podcasts from Amazon Music, Apple Music, Spotify and others or via Bluetooth throughout your home.
- Alexa is happy to help – Ask Alexa for weather updates and to set hands-free timers, get answers to your questions and even hear jokes. Need a few extra minutes in the morning? Just tap your Echo Dot to snooze your alarm.
- Keep your home comfortable – Control compatible smart home devices with your voice and routines triggered by built-in motion or indoor temperature sensors. Create routines to automatically turn on lights when you walk into a room, or start a fan if the inside temperature goes above your comfort zone.
- Do more with device pairing – Fill your home with music using compatible Echo devices in different rooms, or create a home theatre system with Fire TV.
- Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.
The practical design principle is to separate kinds of context and grant access only where it serves a clear purpose:
- Preferences: response style, recurring constraints, or preferred formats.
- Conversation history: earlier exchanges that may help maintain continuity.
- Personal records: files or notes that should be retrieved only when relevant.
- Connected services: information from another account, which may require separate permission and disconnection controls.
How much should you trust personal memory?
Personalization can fail at the point where it is supposed to help: retrieving the right detail. PersonaBench, a 2025 paper in Findings of the Association for Computational Linguistics, evaluated retrieval-augmented generation pipelines on personalized questions using synthetic user profiles and documents. It reports that the evaluated systems struggled to answer accurately even when given the full set of relevant synthetic documents. That result is a warning about the tested pipelines and benchmark—not proof that every commercial assistant performs poorly. PersonaBench, Findings of ACL 2025, pp. 878–893

- Meet Echo Dot Max: Experience rich room-filling sound that automatically adapts to your space and fine-tunes playback. Features a built-in smart home hub and Omnisense technology for highly personalized experiences.
- Music to your ears: With nearly 3x the bass versus Echo Dot (2022 release), it fits beautifully in any space, delivering your personal sound stage with deep bass and enhanced clarity. Listen to streaming services, such as Amazon Music, Apple Music, Spotify, and SiriusXM. Encore!
- Do more with device pairing: Connect compatible Echo smart speakers and smart displays in different rooms, or pair with a second Echo Dot Max to enjoy even richer sound
- Simple smart home control: Set routines, pair and control lights, locks, and thousands of smart home devices that work with Alexa without needing a separate smart home hub. With Omnisense technology, you can activate routines via temperature or presence detection.
- Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot Max doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.
That limitation changes how an assistant should behave. It should distinguish a remembered preference from a fact it retrieved, identify when it is unsure, and make it easy to inspect the source of a personal detail. For consequential matters, treat a confident-sounding answer as something to verify rather than as proof the system remembers correctly.
What should you control?
“Private” is not a single setting. The relevant questions are what information enters the system, where it is processed, who else may receive it, how long it is retained, and whether access can be reviewed or revoked. Controls differ by provider and feature.

For example, Google’s Gemini Apps Privacy Notice, updated June 29, 2026, says information processed while signed in may include prompts, shared files, connected-app information, device information, and generated content. It is provider documentation for Gemini Apps, not a description of every AI service; the notice also distinguishes signed-in and signed-out use and individual features. Browser-based assistants create another possible exposure surface because they may interact with pages a person visits. A USENIX Security 25 audit examined nine GenAI browser assistants and reported collection and sharing practices involving page content and, in some cases, form inputs. The sample and tested behaviors are specific to that study; they should not be generalized to every assistant. USENIX Security 25 study by Vekaria et al.

Before connecting a source of personal data, look for controls that let you:
- See what context is stored or being used.
- Disconnect a source without losing unrelated access.
- Delete saved information or conversation history.
- Choose what is shared, with whom, and for what purpose.
- Understand whether data is processed by the provider or shared with third parties.
Provider memory or portable context?
These approaches differ less in the idea of personalization than in where context lives and who controls it. Provider-held memory is tied to the assistant and its own settings. Portable, user-governed memory aims to carry selected context across tools, but remains a design direction in the sources cited here.
| Question | Memory within a provider’s assistant | Portable, user-governed context |
|---|---|---|
| Where context comes from | May include past chats or connected data, depending on the provider and feature. Google, August 2025 Google, March 2025 | Proposed persistent context that can move across tools and be shared selectively. Stanford Digital Economy Lab |
| Control | Specific inspection, disconnection, and deletion mechanisms depend on the service and feature. Google’s privacy notice | Research proposals emphasize user ownership and revocation; broad implementation is not established. Microsoft Research paper |
| Portability | Context is associated with the provider’s assistant; cross-tool portability is not established by the cited feature descriptions. | Portability across tools is a stated design goal, not a universal capability. Stanford Digital Economy Lab |
| Reliability | Personalization alone does not establish that retrieved details will be correct. | Portability does not itself solve retrieval accuracy; PersonaBench found weaknesses in the evaluated RAG pipelines using synthetic data. PersonaBench |
What a one-person AI should be built around
The best version of personal AI is not the one with the largest personal-data collection. It is the one that makes context purposeful and governable: remember only what improves recurring work, ask before reaching into new sources, distinguish stored preferences from retrieved facts, and give the person a meaningful way to see and change what follows them.
