On October 6, 2026, Sierra announced Personal Agent Protocol. It is an open standard meant to give consumers’ personal AI agents a direct, consistent way to work with businesses, so they don’t have to click through websites or fall back on support lines. Sierra says Meta and Sierra are developing it with Genesys, Instinct, Rocket, Shopify, Stripe and Walmart. It is a protocol in development. The v0.1 specification and reference implementation were still planned when it was announced. (Sierra announcement)
What problem the protocol targets
Sierra describes today’s personal agents as commonly navigating websites and apps, clicking through forms, or resorting to support lines and web chat. The protocol’s stated aims are authentication, consumer control over what an agent may do, and business visibility into agent activity. Those are Sierra’s description of the problem and the intended design. The announcement offers no measurements showing the protocol achieves them. Source

How the announced flow works
- Discovery. The agent starts on a business’s website and learns what the company offers and how to reach it.
- Session start. The agent opens a session for its user. It can begin as a guest for low-stakes tasks, such as checking availability or a returns policy.
- Sign-in when needed. If the task needs account access, the customer signs in on the company’s own page or uses credentials already configured with the agent.
- Access choice. The customer decides whether the agent gets read-only or write access.
- Task handling. The business chooses how to serve the task. Options are its regular website, APIs using standards such as MCP and OpenAPI, or a company agent for conversational jobs like a warranty claim.
Sierra says sessions are built on OAuth and can carry across channels. Source
Who is involved
Meta and Sierra are the developers named in the announcement. The partners are Genesys, Instinct, Rocket, Shopify, Stripe and Walmart. The announcement quotes three of them:
#1 Best Overall
- Tony Bates, Chairman & CEO, Genesys: “Personal AI is creating a new front door to the enterprise.”
- Mani Fazeli, VP Product, Shopify: “As personal agents become part of everyday life, merchants have a new frontier for excellent customer service.”
- Kevin Miller, Head of Payments, Stripe: “A customer relationship doesn’t start or end at checkout.”
These are partners’ views published in Sierra’s announcement, not independent findings about how well the protocol works. Source

Stated plans
Sierra said a v0.1 specification would arrive later in October 2026, along with design workshops and a reference implementation. The announcement doesn’t show that any of these have been released.
Possible future capabilities
The announcement mentions more detailed permissions, notifications to agents about events such as a delayed flight or a shipped order, and payment extensions. It presents these as possible future directions. It doesn’t define them or say they are available.

What the announcement does not say
- No test results, adoption figures or quantified security outcomes.
- No compatibility guarantees or deployment timelines.
- No confirmation that any partner has shipped support.

What to watch as the spec appears
- Authorization. How read-only and write scopes are defined, and how consent can be revoked.
- Business visibility. What businesses can see about agent activity, and what controls they get.
- Connection routes. How the website, API and company-agent paths are described and how they stay consistent.
- Maturity. Whether the v0.1 spec and reference implementation arrive, and whether partners implement them.
These are questions to check against the published materials. The announcement doesn’t answer them.

Personal Agent Protocol is an early, partner-backed attempt to replace agent screen-clicking with sessions that rest on OAuth and give users a read-only or write choice. Whether it becomes a working standard depends on the v0.1 spec, the reference implementation and real adoption, and none of those had been demonstrated as of the October 6, 2026 announcement.
