Start with Persona 5 Royal if you want the broadest introduction to the series on Steam: it combines Tokyo exploration, friendships, dungeon crawling, party customization and turn-based combat in one modern package. Choose Persona 4 Golden instead if a small-town murder mystery and coming-of-age story sound more appealing. If the Dark Hour premise is what attracts you, begin with either Persona 3 Reload or Persona 3 Portable; both are available on Steam, but the evidence here does not establish one as universally superior.
The short answer: which Persona game should you play first?
For most newcomers, Persona 5 Royal is the safest first choice. That is an editorial recommendation based on how much of the series’ formula its Steam description presents in one game: modern-day social life, relationships, Tokyo exploration, dungeon crawling, party development and turn-based battles. It gives a new player the clearest view of what makes Persona distinctive without requiring knowledge of earlier entries.

There is no official ATLUS-mandated play order. Persona is an anthology-style role-playing series: each main game follows a different group of teenagers, setting and supernatural crisis. The common foundation is modern Japan, ordinary school or community life, and young people who awaken to powers known as Personas. You can therefore choose by premise rather than by Steam release date.

| Game | Best first choice for | Story hook and setting | Combat emphasis | Steam evidence and edition notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Persona 5 Royal | Most newcomers | Phantom Thieves, Tokyo, relationships and a broad modern adventure | Turn-based battles, dungeon exploration and Persona/party customization | Steam release: October 20, 2022. Royal adds an entirely new semester and new characters compared with the original Persona 5, according to ATLUS’s 2020 launch FAQ. |
| Persona 4 Golden | Players who prioritize mystery and character drama | Rural Inaba, a coming-of-age story and a chain of serial murders | Traditional turn-based Persona combat tied to investigation and social links | Steam release: June 13, 2020. The Steam page says the game is best experienced with a controller; that is a recommendation, not a requirement. |
| Persona 3 Reload | Players drawn to the Dark Hour premise and a newer presentation | Persona 3’s supernatural setting and cast | Persona-style turn-based RPG combat | Listed in the Steam Persona catalog. The available evidence here does not support a categorical comparison with Portable. |
| Persona 3 Portable | Players specifically seeking the Portable edition | The Persona 3 premise in a separate available version | Persona-style turn-based RPG combat | Listed in the Steam Persona catalog. Check the current Steam description for the edition’s feature set before buying. |
| Persona 5 Strikers | Players who already like the Phantom Thieves | A new Phantom Thieves adventure | Different action-oriented combat rather than the mainline turn-based format | Listed in the Steam Persona catalog and described by ATLUS as a new Phantom Thieves adventure. The sources do not establish a universal prerequisite or exact continuity order. |
| Persona 5 Tactica | Players who want strategy on a grid | A new Phantom Thieves story | Tactical, grid-based role-playing combat | Released November 16, 2023. Steam and ATLUS descriptions emphasize its tactical format and new story. |
Why Persona 5 Royal is the default recommendation
It shows the complete Persona formula
Persona 5 Royal places you in a recognizable modern setting while giving equal weight to daily relationships and supernatural exploration. The Steam description foregrounds Tokyo, social bonds, dungeon crawling, turn-based combat and the Phantom Thieves. That combination matters for a first game: you can discover whether you prefer school-life conversations, careful dungeon planning, or battles without switching to another title to see the rest of the formula.

Royal is the expanded version of Persona 5
ATLUS’s launch FAQ, written for the original 2020 release context, describes Royal as adding “an entirely new semester and new characters” compared with Persona 5. Treat that as a description of the expansion over the original game, not as a promise about every later port or a reason to infer a particular play order. For a Steam newcomer deciding between the two names, Royal is the version whose listing and publisher materials present the expanded experience.
Who may not want to start here
Persona 5 Royal is not automatically the right choice for someone who dislikes large cities, long social-simulation sections or a modern ensemble adventure. If the idea of investigating a rural murder case sounds more compelling, Persona 4 Golden is a better first purchase even though it is an older release.
When Persona 4 Golden should be your first game
A small-town mystery instead of Tokyo spectacle
Persona 4 Golden is set in rural Inaba. Its Steam listing frames the story as a coming-of-age adventure that begins with a chain of serial murders. That premise gives the game a focused investigative identity: the setting is a smaller community, and the central question is who is connected to the killings.
Choose it for its tone and cast dynamic
Select Persona 4 Golden first if you want friendships and personal growth organized around a mystery rather than the Phantom Thieves’ urban rebellion. The core Persona structure remains—social relationships alongside supernatural turn-based battles—but the setting and narrative hook are distinct enough that choosing by mood is sensible.

Controller guidance
The Persona 4 Golden Steam listing says the game is best experienced with a controller. That is an optional setup recommendation, not a requirement for every Persona game or every PC player. A standard PC-compatible controller can make navigation and battle inputs more comfortable; verify your own hardware support in Steam before purchase.
Persona 3 on Steam: Reload or Portable?
Start with Persona 3 if the premise is your main attraction
Both Persona 3 Reload and Persona 3 Portable appear in the Steam Persona catalog. That means you do not need to work backward through storefront release order to reach Persona 3’s setting and story. If the Dark Hour premise, rather than a particular combat system or presentation style, is what interests you, either listing is a legitimate starting route.
Why this guide does not declare a winner
The available catalog evidence confirms that the two versions exist but does not provide enough comparative detail to say that Reload is categorically better than Portable, or vice versa. They are separate releases, not a single edition with a simple upgrade choice. Read each current Steam description for the features, presentation and input support that matter to you, then select the version whose stated contents match your priorities.
Do not choose by a supposed mandatory series order
The main Persona games are connected by themes and terminology more than by a single continuous plot. You can begin with Persona 3 without first completing Persona 4 or Persona 5. Starting with Persona 3 is therefore a preference decision, not a prerequisite decision.

What to play after Persona 5
Persona 5 Strikers
Strikers is a follow-up option for readers who finish Persona 5 Royal and want another adventure featuring the Phantom Thieves. ATLUS describes it as a new Phantom Thieves adventure, and it is listed in the Steam Persona catalog. The evidence does not establish a universal required order or an exact continuity rule, so treat it as a cast-driven next choice rather than a compulsory chapter.
Persona 5 Tactica
Tactica keeps the Phantom Thieves but changes the gameplay emphasis to tactical, grid-based combat. Its Steam and ATLUS descriptions identify a new story and a tactical RPG format; it was released on November 16, 2023. Choose it when the appeal is planning movement, positioning and turns on a grid, not when you specifically want the standard Persona 5 dungeon-and-turn-based structure.
Because Tactica is a genre shift, it is best understood as a targeted follow-up. You may appreciate the characters more after Persona 5, but the sources used here do not establish a universal prerequisite that every player must complete first.

Step 1: Pick the story hook
- Choose Persona 5 Royal for Phantom Thieves, Tokyo and the broad modern formula.
- Choose Persona 4 Golden for rural Inaba, serial-murder investigation and coming-of-age themes.
- Choose Persona 3 Reload or Persona 3 Portable when the Persona 3 premise itself is your priority.
- Choose Persona 5 Tactica when a new Phantom Thieves story with tactical combat sounds more appealing than a conventional RPG.
Step 2: Decide whether combat style is decisive
Royal and Golden represent the familiar turn-based Persona role-playing approach. Persona 3 titles also use the Persona-style RPG structure. Tactica is the clear outlier because its battles are tactical and grid-based. Strikers is another follow-up choice rather than a substitute for the mainline formula, so do not buy it expecting the same battle structure as Royal.

Step 3: Check the exact Steam edition
Steam catalogs, regional pricing, discounts, bundles and review totals change. Open the current regional store page before purchase, especially for Persona 3 Reload and Persona 3 Portable, whose comparative feature details are not established by the information available here. Treat release dates as historical identifiers, not guarantees that a listing’s current price or bundle contents remain unchanged.
Step 4: Plan your setup
- Use keyboard and mouse if that is your preferred PC setup.
- Consider a standard PC game controller for Persona 4 Golden, whose Steam page recommends one.
- Use Steam’s current system requirements and input information for the exact edition you select.
Difficulty and accessibility for story-focused players
ATLUS’s official Persona 5 Royal website states: “The story content will not be affected by the level you choose, so we recommend SAFE or EASY mode for those who just want to enjoy the story.” That makes Safe or Easy a reasonable starting point if combat difficulty is secondary to the characters and plot. You can choose a higher challenge when you want battles to demand more planning; the quoted guidance specifically addresses preserving story content, not eliminating every gameplay consequence.
The same principle applies when choosing among games: do not reject a title solely because you are unsure about its combat difficulty. First decide whether its setting and story hook interest you, then use the available difficulty options and input settings to make the experience comfortable.

Assuming Steam release order is the play order
Steam availability dates are useful for identifying PC versions, but they do not create a mandatory narrative sequence. Persona 4 Golden’s 2020 Steam release and Persona 5 Royal’s 2022 release do not mean you must play them in that order—or that either must precede Persona 3.

Buying Tactica for the mainline combat
Tactica is a tactical RPG with grid-based battles. It is a poor match if your specific goal is the standard Persona 5 Royal dungeon-and-turn-based experience, even though both games feature the Phantom Thieves.
Treating edition comparisons as settled fact
Reload and Portable are both available, but the evidence here does not support a blanket claim that one is the correct version for everyone. Compare the current Steam descriptions and select based on the features you actually value.
Ignoring the setting that motivates you
Persona games ask for a substantial time commitment. A player excited by Inaba’s murder mystery is more likely to stay engaged with Persona 4 Golden than with a theoretically broader recommendation that does not match that interest. Use the premise as your tie-breaker.
Final recommendation by player type
| If you want… | Start with… | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| The most representative first Persona experience | Persona 5 Royal | It combines relationships, Tokyo, dungeons, party customization and turn-based combat. |
| A rural mystery and coming-of-age story | Persona 4 Golden | Its Inaba setting and serial-murder hook define a different narrative flavor. |
| The Persona 3 premise | Persona 3 Reload or Persona 3 Portable | Both are available on Steam; compare their current listings rather than relying on an assumed universal winner. |
| Another Phantom Thieves adventure | Persona 5 Strikers | ATLUS presents it as a new adventure for that cast. |
| Grid-based tactical battles | Persona 5 Tactica | Its defining change is tactical RPG combat and a new Phantom Thieves story. |
If you have no specific preference, buy Persona 5 Royal first. If you already know that mystery, Persona 3’s premise or tactical strategy is what you want, let that preference override the default.
