1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf you want one default starting point, choose Persona 5 Royal: it is presented as a story-heavy expansion of Persona 5 with an entirely new semester and characters. Choose Persona 3 Reload instead if its darker mystery, the original Persona 3 story, or the opportunity to play that story with modern presentation is what attracts you. Both are reasonable first Persona games; the better choice depends on the experience you want, your platform and your region’s available edition.
The short answer
These games are not two chapters of one continuous storyline. Their official descriptions introduce different protagonists, groups, settings and supernatural conflicts, so a newcomer does not need to complete one before starting the other.

| If you want… | Start with | Why |
|---|---|---|
| The most elaborate modern entry point | Persona 5 Royal | It expands Persona 5 with an entirely new semester and characters that were not in the original game. |
| A remake of an earlier Persona story | Persona 3 Reload | It retains Persona 3’s scenario and characters as its foundation while refreshing graphics, usability and presentation. |
| Teenagers living double lives as Phantom Thieves | Persona 5 Royal | That is the central premise described by Atlus’s official materials. |
| A hidden hour, Shadows and the S.E.E.S. investigation | Persona 3 Reload | Those elements define its official setup. |
This is a preference-based recommendation, not a claim that either game is objectively better. Platform and edition availability can be the deciding factor if only one is sold or supported where you live.
What Persona 3 Reload is
Persona 3 Reload is Atlus’s remake of Persona 3. SEGA’s official Japanese product description says the original scenario and characters remain the foundation, while the remake refreshes the graphics and usability. It also adds character side episodes, additional dialogue and voiced scenes.
#1 Best Overall
- Experience the pivotal game of the Persona series faithfully remade with cutting-edge graphics, modernized quality-of-life features, and signature stylish UI.
- Fully immerse yourself in an emotional, gripping journey with new scenes and character interactions, additional voiceover, and a reloaded soundtrack.
- Choose how to meaningfully spend each day through various activities from exploring the Port Island to forging genuine bonds with beloved characters.
- Build and command your optimal team to take down otherworldly Shadows and climb closer to the truth.
The premise follows a transfer student arriving at Gekkoukan High. After awakening to Persona abilities, the student joins the Specialized Extracurricular Execution Squad, usually called S.E.E.S. The group confronts monsters known as Shadows during the hidden “Shadow Hour.” That setup gives Reload a mystery-driven starting point: the unusual hour, the threat appearing within it and the group’s attempt to understand what is happening.
Starting with Reload means experiencing Persona 3’s story through a modern remake rather than an untouched older release. “Modern” here refers to the documented presentation and usability refreshes; it does not mean that every element from every previous Persona 3 edition has been confirmed as part of Reload. Treat it as a new version of Persona 3’s foundation, not as a promise that it reproduces every historical release feature.
What Persona 5 Royal is
Persona 5 Royal is an expanded version of Persona 5. In Atlus’s launch FAQ, Atlus West communications manager Ari Advincula described it as “a story-heavy game that adds an entirely new semester and new characters never-before experienced in Persona 5.” That additional material is the key reason to choose Royal over the original edition when both are available.
Atlus’s official description frames its cast as teenagers who live dual lives as the Phantom Thieves. Their ordinary student identities and their activities as a supernatural group form the game’s central contrast. If that premise immediately sounds more appealing than investigating the Shadow Hour with S.E.E.S., Royal is the more natural first choice.
Royal is an enhanced edition rather than a remake of Persona 3. Its defining documented change is added story content and characters. Do not select it expecting the same version history or narrative setup as Reload: the two games revise different entries in the series and begin with different casts and conflicts.
The important differences for a first-time player

| Documented added material | Refreshed graphics and usability, plus character side episodes, dialogue and voiced scenes. | An entirely new semester and new characters. |
| Best fit for a reader drawn to… | An earlier Persona story, a darker mystery setup and a modern remake. | A highly expanded, story-led modern entry with the Phantom Thieves premise. |

The table describes documented premises and version changes, not a ranking of writing, combat, dungeon design or overall quality. The official material does not establish a neutral scorecard for those subjective comparisons.
Choose Persona 5 Royal first when these statements sound like you
You want the safest general recommendation
For someone who has never played Persona or a Japanese role-playing game, Royal is the default recommendation because its official positioning combines the complete Persona 5 experience with substantial new story material. You are buying the expanded edition rather than starting with an earlier version and later wondering whether the added semester or characters are missing.

- Persona 3 Reload is a captivating reimagining of the genre-defining RPG, reborn for the modern era.
You are motivated by the Phantom Thieves premise
Royal’s teenagers lead dual lives as students and Phantom Thieves. That is a concrete test: if the idea of a cast balancing ordinary school life with a supernatural mission is what made you interested, begin there. A premise that holds your attention is more useful than an abstract argument about release order.
You want the expanded Persona 5 story from the outset
Royal’s new semester and new characters are not minor labeling changes. Atlus specifically identifies them as material never before experienced in the original Persona 5. Starting with Royal lets you encounter that expanded story in the edition intended to contain it.
You prefer a contemporary presentation without starting from a remake of an earlier entry
Both games have modern product positioning, but their relationship to older releases differs. Royal expands Persona 5; Reload remakes Persona 3. If you would rather begin with the newer game’s expanded-edition identity than with a remake of an earlier story, Royal fits that preference.
Choose Persona 3 Reload first when these statements sound like you
The Shadow Hour mystery is the hook
Reload’s official setup is unusually specific: a hidden hour, Shadows and a school-based squad investigating the phenomenon. If that mystery is more compelling than the Phantom Thieves’ double life, choose Reload even though Royal is the broader default recommendation.

Reload preserves Persona 3’s scenario and characters as its foundation while updating graphics and usability. That makes it the appropriate first game for readers who are specifically curious about the earlier entry and want its story in a refreshed format.
You value added character-focused material
SEGA’s Japanese product description lists character side episodes, additional dialogue and voiced scenes among Reload’s additions. If those documented updates matter more to you than Royal’s new semester, they provide a clear reason to begin with Reload.
You are comfortable choosing the less universal fit
Starting with Reload is not a mistake or a requirement to play Royal first. It is simply the preference-led route for readers whose interest starts with Persona 3’s premise and remake status rather than Persona 5 Royal’s expanded-edition structure.

Can either game be your first Persona game?
Yes. The official descriptions present separate protagonists, organizations, settings and supernatural conflicts. Nothing in those descriptions establishes a narrative handoff that would require a newcomer to know the other game first.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →That does not make the experiences interchangeable. You should still choose by premise and version history. A player beginning with Royal will meet the Phantom Thieves and the expanded Persona 5 story; a player beginning with Reload will meet the transfer student, S.E.E.S. and the Shadow Hour. The first game will shape which tone and setting you associate with the series, but it does not lock you out of the other title.
There is also no need to invent a completion-time rule for this decision. A reliable primary-source comparison of total playtime has not been established, so runtime estimates should not be treated as a deciding fact. Pick the world and edition you are more likely to finish rather than relying on an unverified number of hours.
If you plan to play both
There is no mandatory order. Starting with Royal gives you the broad default route: an expanded Persona 5 edition and the Phantom Thieves’ dual-life premise. Starting with Reload gives you Persona 3’s earlier scenario in its remake form and lets the Shadow Hour mystery establish your first impression of the series.
Playing both eventually is a useful way to avoid turning the choice into a permanent verdict. The games have separate casts and official setups, so your first selection is about which introduction you want now, not which title you are allowed to understand later. Do not buy the first game expecting its plot to function as a prerequisite manual for the second.

Platform and edition details
Availability changes by country, storefront and edition. The official listings below identify the platforms they cover, but a Japanese product page should not be read as a worldwide stock or pricing guarantee. Check your local digital store and retailer before purchasing.
| Game | Officially listed platforms or services | Edition and date notes |
|---|---|---|
| Persona 3 Reload | Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Game Pass, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Windows, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4 and Steam. | SEGA’s Japanese listing gives an original release date of February 2, 2024, and a Nintendo Switch 2 release date of October 23, 2025. Its package and retail details are Japan-specific. |
| Persona 5 Royal | Xbox Game Pass, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Windows, Steam, PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch. | Atlus’s official page shows physical and digital standard-edition options. Regional availability and current storefront listings still need to be checked locally. |
Before you buy, confirm four details: the platform you own, whether the listing is for Royal rather than the original Persona 5, whether the copy is physical or digital, and whether the store region matches your account. The same title can have different package availability across regions.

- A Good Smile Company import
- From the popular video game series
- Measures approximately 6.69” tall
- Figure stand included
Cost is another practical tie-breaker, but it must be checked at checkout. Official pages identify editions and platforms, not a universal current price, sale schedule, inventory level or subscription entitlement in every country. Compare the local standard edition for each game on the storefront you actually use instead of assuming that a similarly named listing includes the same content.
A five-minute decision process
- Read the premises aloud. If “S.E.E.S., Shadows and the hidden Shadow Hour” is the stronger hook, mark Reload. If “teenagers living dual lives as Phantom Thieves” is stronger, mark Royal.
- Decide whether remake or expansion matters more. Reload updates Persona 3’s presentation and usability. Royal adds a new semester and characters to Persona 5.
- Choose your preferred story context. Reload gives you the earlier Persona 3 scenario and characters; Royal gives you the expanded Persona 5 experience.
- Check your actual platform. Compare the official platform lists with the console, PC storefront or subscription service you use.
- Verify the exact edition and region. Confirm the product name, standard-edition status where relevant, language or regional listing and physical-versus-digital format before checkout.
- Set a purchase ceiling. If one game is discounted locally or included through a service you already use, that can reasonably settle the decision, provided the listing is the correct edition.
If your answers remain tied, use Royal as the default starting point. If Reload’s premise is the reason you are considering Persona at all, let that specific interest override the default.

Do not search for plot explanations before choosing
Royal is explicitly described as story-heavy, and Atlus asks creators to respect spoiler boundaries. You can make this choice from the premise and edition information alone. Avoid plot summaries, character reveals and ending discussions until you have selected and started a game.
Do not assume “Reload” contains every historical Persona 3 feature
The documented claim is that Reload retains the original scenario and characters as its foundation and adds specified presentation, dialogue, voiced-scene and side-episode updates. That is not evidence that every element from every older Persona 3 edition appears unchanged.
Do not confuse Royal with the original Persona 5
When shopping, check the complete title. Royal is the expanded version that contains the new semester and new characters identified by Atlus; a listing that says only Persona 5 may refer to the earlier edition.
Do not treat a platform list as a live price or stock report
Official product pages establish listed platforms and edition types, not the price, inventory or eligibility of a particular retailer promotion. Those details can change by region and date.
What this comparison can—and cannot—tell you
The evidence supports a clear fit-based choice: Reload is a modern remake of Persona 3 with documented presentation and character-focused additions, while Royal is an expanded Persona 5 edition with a new semester and new characters. It also supports treating both as plausible first games.

It does not establish an objective winner, a universal audience ranking, average completion times, comparative dungeon quality, combat superiority or current prices. Those claims would require separate, clearly sourced evidence. For this decision, the official premises, version histories and your local platform availability are the dependable criteria.
Final recommendation
Start with Persona 5 Royal if you want the most broadly suitable modern entry and are attracted to the Phantom Thieves’ dual-life premise or the promise of an expanded story. Start with Persona 3 Reload if the Shadow Hour mystery, S.E.E.S. and the chance to play Persona 3 through a refreshed remake are the reasons you are interested. Neither choice is a prerequisite for the other, so let the premise that makes you want to begin decide the order.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Persona 3 Reload or Persona 5 Royal better for a complete newcomer?
Both work as first Persona games because their official descriptions present separate protagonists, groups, settings and conflicts. Persona 5 Royal is the default recommendation for the broadest modern entry and its expanded story. Choose Persona 3 Reload instead when the Shadow Hour, S.E.E.S. and the remake of Persona 3 are the stronger hooks.

Do I need to play Persona 3 Reload before Persona 5 Royal?
No. Neither official product description presents one as a required prequel to the other. They are separate entries with different casts and premises, so you can begin with whichever setting interests you more.
What is the main difference between Reload and Royal?
Reload is a remake of Persona 3, retaining its scenario and characters as the foundation while refreshing graphics and usability and adding side episodes, dialogue and voiced scenes. Royal is an expanded Persona 5 edition with an entirely new semester and new characters.
Which game has the Phantom Thieves?
Persona 5 Royal. Atlus’s official description frames its teenagers as living dual lives as the Phantom Thieves. Persona 3 Reload instead centers on S.E.E.S., Shadows and the hidden Shadow Hour.
Does Persona 3 Reload include every feature from older Persona 3 versions?
That is not established by the official description. The documented claim is that Reload preserves the original scenario and characters as its foundation and adds specified presentation, usability, dialogue, voiced-scene and side-episode updates. Do not assume every historical release feature is reproduced unchanged.
Which platforms support these games?
Official listings include Persona 3 Reload on Switch 2, Xbox platforms and Game Pass, Windows, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4 and Steam. Persona 5 Royal is listed for Xbox platforms and Game Pass, Windows, Steam, PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch. Confirm your local store because platform, physical availability and edition details vary by region.
Can I decide based on price or subscription access?
Yes, if you verify the exact local listing. Prices, sales, stock and subscription entitlements are regional and change over time; the official platform pages do not provide a universal current price. Use the correct title and edition on the storefront tied to your account.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Pick Persona 5 Royal for the default newcomer route, its Phantom Thieves premise and expanded semester. Pick Persona 3 Reload for the Shadow Hour mystery, S.E.E.S. and a modern remake of Persona 3. Both are valid first games, so let your preferred premise and local edition availability decide.
