That distinction fueled a widely shared 2021 exchange: one person objected to screenshots of an NFT, while another joked about minting a collection from images saved by right-clicking.
What happened in the 2021 NFT screenshot dispute?
In a report updated November 6, 2021, Futurism described a Twitter exchange in which SaeedDiCaprio shared a screenshot of a message objecting to people taking screenshots of NFTs. The unnamed sender wrote: “You are mad that you don’t own the art that I own. Delete that screenshot.” The message also asserted, “the blockchain doesn’t lie. I own it.”

SaeedDiCaprio replied: “I could make a whole NFT collection of screenshots of me right clicking and saving the image and sell it.” Futurism identified the artwork at issue as “Lazy Lions #348,” from a collection hosted on OpenSea. The article said bids had passed $5,000 at the time; that is a historical report from 2021, not a current price or valuation.

What does “right-clicker mentality” mean?
In NFT circles, “right-clicker mentality” is a rhetorical label used to mock the idea that an NFT’s significance can be dismissed because its associated image is easy to copy. It is not a technical or legal term. Futurism attributed the label to NFT collector and creator Midwit Milhouse.

Milhouse compared the distinction to making a gold-coated steak at home versus eating one at Salt Bae’s restaurant. He said: “Sure, you can make your own gold-coated steak for 65GBP, but then you don’t have the satisfaction, flex, clout that comes from having eaten at Salt Bae’s restaurant.” The analogy expresses a view about experience and status; it does not establish that an NFT has objective or lasting value.
Does owning an NFT mean you own the art?
Not by itself. An NFT is a token recorded on a blockchain and may be associated with a particular image or other work. Holding that token is different from holding the image file, and both are different from owning copyright in the underlying artwork.

A 2022 article in the Harvard Journal of Sports & Entertainment Law explains that an NFT holder usually owns the token linked to a particular digital copy of a photograph, not the photograph’s copyright. Any copyright or license rights depend on the rights granted and the circumstances. The sources describing this dispute do not establish the legal status or license terms of Lazy Lions #348.

- Holding the token: Control of the NFT is recorded separately from possession of a copy of the image.
- Copyright and licenses: The token alone does not settle who owns copyright or what uses are permitted. Whether a particular copy or use is lawful depends on the relevant rights and facts; this exchange does not answer that question.
Why might someone value a token if the image can be copied?
Some NFT holders may value a token for its provenance, community, access, or benefits associated with it, rather than because nobody else can reproduce the image. The 2022 Harvard law review article discusses community spaces and perks as possible parts of an NFT’s value proposition. Those features are not guaranteed: what, if anything, comes with a token depends on its particular terms and project.

That helps explain the disagreement. A copied image can look the same as the artwork associated with a token, while the token remains a distinct blockchain record. Whether that distinction matters to a particular person is a question of perceived value, not proof of copyright ownership.
