Perseverance found that igneous rocks in Jezero Crater’s Margin Unit preserve evidence of water interacting with them on at least three separate occasions. The evidence points to carbon-dioxide-rich groundwater, a possible later connection to the ancient lake, and a final episode of heated underground water. The order can be inferred from the rocks, but scientists cannot yet date the episodes.

What Perseverance found in the Margin Unit

The Margin Unit follows the inner edge of Jezero Crater’s rim. When Perseverance reached it in September 2023, scientists expected sedimentary rocks associated with an ancient lake shoreline. Instead, the rover found igneous rocks formed from magma underground or volcanic activity. Their minerals preserve evidence of several water-rock processes.

The result complicates the idea that carbonate detected from orbit formed solely through interaction with Jezero’s lake. It does not overturn the evidence that the crater once held a lake; it shows that the Margin Unit records additional kinds of water activity. Study lead author Candice Bedford of Purdue University said the location became “a sort of crossroads for aqueous systems.”

How scientists identified the water-altered rocks

Perseverance’s SuperCam instrument, mounted on the rover’s mast, estimates mineralogy from reflected light and can fire a laser at a target as far as 21 feet (6.5 meters) away. The laser creates plasma whose spectrum provides information about the target’s chemistry. NASA reports that Perseverance analyzed more than 185 bedrock targets across the Margin Unit. That is a count of analyzed targets, not an estimate of how common these processes are elsewhere on Mars.

The unit spans about 870 feet (265 meters) in elevation. Higher areas preserve coarse-grained, olivine-rich rock with little sign of alteration. Lower rocks associated with the lakebed show fractured olivine and silica, helping researchers compare the rocks’ mineral evidence across the unit.

The three inferred episodes of water alteration

Episode Setting and evidence How certain is the interpretation?
1. Carbon-dioxide-rich groundwater Groundwater reacted with olivine and left carbonate ridges in bedrock fractures at lower elevations. NASA describes this as the first inferred episode.
2. Possible lake-related water Some rocks contain silica, which is more abundant in rocks that sat below the waterline. The lake connection is possible, not proven.
3. Heated underground water Veins at one eastern location, about 10 inches (25 centimeters) thick, contain minerals including calcium sulfate and fluorite. Fluorite points to hot water circulating through volcanic rock. NASA describes the veins as evidence of a later hot-water episode.

First: groundwater reacting with olivine

In the first inferred episode, carbon-dioxide-rich groundwater reacted with olivine, a mineral in the igneous rocks. The reaction left carbonate in fractures. This provides one explanation for carbonate in the Margin Unit that does not depend on the ancient lake.

Second: a possible connection to the lake

Silica occurs in some of the rocks and is more abundant in those that were below the waterline. Researchers say that pattern may connect this alteration to the lake. It is a plausible interpretation, not proof that the lake caused all the carbonate or silica alteration. As coauthor Eleni Ravanis of the University of Hawaii at Manoa explained, turning olivine into carbonate can leave silica behind.

Third: hot water circulating underground

At one eastern location, Perseverance found mineral veins about 10 inches (25 centimeters) thick, including calcium sulfate and fluorite. Fluorite is a clue that heated water circulated through volcanic rock, marking a distinct later episode from the groundwater and possible lake-related processes.

What the discovery does—and does not—say about Mars

The finding shows that the Margin Unit’s rocks record multiple water-rock interactions, not just a single lake-related process. It does not show that all three episodes occurred while the lake existed, because their absolute ages are unknown. Their order comes from geological relationships among the rocks and minerals; researchers cannot yet determine when each interaction happened.

Carbonates and silica can preserve traces, and some olivine-water reactions on Earth release hydrogen that certain microbes can use. Those facts make the rocks relevant to habitability research, but NASA’s account does not report evidence of life or a direct biosignature on Mars.
