The mission team calls it the rover’s “Wild West” frontier: unfamiliar terrain containing some of the oldest rocks Perseverance has encountered. Their origins are still being investigated, but they could preserve clues to early Mars and the evolution of rocky planets.
What is Mars’ “Wild West”?
“Wild West” is the mission team’s nickname for Lac de Charmes, a region west of Jezero Crater’s rim. It is not a separate planet or a formally described geological era: the phrase refers to new terrain for Perseverance to explore. The area’s valleys and ridges drew the rover team to investigate how it formed.
Perseverance followed a looping route between interesting outcrops, examining rocks along the way. In a NASA update published Sept. 28, 2026, with mission details dated Sept. 21, the team said the rover had spent 2026 in Lac de Charmes and was nearing the end of its exploration there.
What did Perseverance find there?
The rocks in Lac de Charmes are among the oldest the rover has encountered. NASA’s current interpretation is that they formed when Mars was young and undergoing heavy asteroid bombardment, earlier than the sedimentary rocks inside Jezero Crater that formed in rivers and lakes.

Observations so far point to more than one possible geological process. NASA says some rocks may have formed as lava or magma cooled, making them igneous; others may have formed in the aftermath of violent impacts and be impactites. Some could reflect both processes. These are working interpretations, not a settled explanation for every outcrop.
NASA mission update author Athanasios (Thanos) Klidaras, a Ph.D. candidate at Purdue University, said the rocks “could teach us much about the earliest era of Martian history — and, more broadly, how rocky planets evolved during the tumultuous early history of our solar system.” The possibility of learning about other rocky planets is part of why rocks formed during Mars’ early, impact-heavy period matter.

How did the rover investigate the rocks?
The team used abrasion patches to expose rock surfaces for closer inspection before deciding where to pursue sample targets. By the Sept. 21 mission update, Perseverance had made 13 abrasion patches on rocks of interest in Lac de Charmes. One, on a rock called Badger Peak, revealed an unusual light-and-dark texture. An attempt to collect a sample there failed because the boulder was too hard, so the team looked for a similar target.
The rover then investigated a nearby outcrop called Gardenia, which NASA said could be a breccia—a rock made of broken fragments. The same update said the team had directed Perseverance toward a nearby area nicknamed Idubi, where it had spotted hundreds of light-toned boulders. These are details from the September 2026 update, not a description of the rover’s current position.

What is helping Perseverance drive through the region?
NASA says a new driving algorithm repurposes a processor previously used to communicate with Ingenuity, the Mars helicopter. The change supports longer and more accurate rover drives, helping the team navigate between outcrops during the investigation.
