Perfect Dark (2000) vs. Perfect Dark (2024): gameplay, story, and platforms

Perfect Dark (2000) is a released Nintendo 64 first-person shooter that can also be played through its 2010 Xbox version. The Perfect Dark shown in 2024 was something fundamentally different: a reboot with a new story and a planned mix of shooting, stealth, melee, traversal and gadgets. It never became a playable sequel or remake. Microsoft canceled the project on July 2, 2025, when The Initiative closed, so there is no consumer version of the 2024 game to compare in practice.

That distinction changes the useful question. You are not choosing between two released games. You are comparing a finished 2000 title with an unreleased design that was canceled before launch. The sections below separate shipped features from announced intentions, explain the two stories and settings without filling gaps with speculation, and show which platforms are actually available.

Perfect Dark 2000 vs. 2024 at a glance

Question Perfect Dark (2000) Perfect Dark (2024 project)
What is it? Released Nintendo 64 first-person shooter; a 2010 Xbox version also exists. Reboot announced as a new story and universe, inspired by elements of earlier games.
Release status Released in 2000; Xbox edition followed in 2010. Canceled July 2, 2025, before release.
Playable platforms Nintendo 64; the current Xbox listing identifies Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and Xbox Cloud Gaming for the 2010 version. None. No released platform version or announced release window.
Campaign Story campaign with gadgets and upgrades, according to the official Xbox listing. Planned single-player missions with multiple ways to complete objectives.
Multiplayer The original N64 release supports multiplayer; Nintendo specifies that three- and four-player modes require an Expansion Pak. No shipped multiplayer mode was available to evaluate.
Core design Released first-person shooter built around its completed campaign and multiplayer features. Planned blend of first-person shooting, stealth, melee, parkour-style traversal, scanning and gadgets.
Setting The gathered official material confirms a story campaign but does not provide enough detail for a reliable full plot summary. Near-future Cairo affected by environmental disasters and a corporate ecological-restoration project.

The dates also need care. Nintendo’s UK page gives May 19, 2000, for the original release, while GameSpot’s historical record lists May 22 as the first-release date. Those entries can reflect regional dating rather than a contradiction. The Xbox version belongs to the 2010 release lineage; its current store listing is the relevant guide to present-day Xbox play options.

What the 2000 game actually is

The 2000 title is a completed Nintendo 64 first-person shooter. It is not a prototype or an announcement: the campaign, gadgets, upgrades and multiplayer are shipped features. Nintendo’s product information also documents a hardware condition that matters if you are using original equipment: an Expansion Pak is required for solo missions and for three- or four-player multiplayer on the N64 version.

#1 Best Overall
Nintendo 64 Expansion Pak (Renewed)
  • This Certified Refurbished product is tested and certified to look and work like new. The refurbishing process includes functionality testing, basic cleaning, inspection, and repackaging. The product ships with all relevant accessories, a minimum 90-day warranty, and may arrive in a generic box. Only select sellers who maintain a high performance bar may offer Certified Refurbished products on Amazon.com
  • Cartridge is inserted into Nintendo 64 console; doubles original 4MB of memory, for a total of 8MB
  • Allows games to have larger worlds, longer animation sequences, and much more complex gameplay.
  • Increases screen resolution from 320 X 240 pixels up to 640 X 480 pixels
  • Required for games like Donkey Kong 64

That requirement is specific to the N64 edition. It should not be carried over to the Xbox version, which is a separate release lineage and does not use Nintendo 64 memory hardware. If you are buying or setting up original N64 hardware, confirm that an Expansion Pak is installed before treating the game as ready for the full solo and multiplayer experience.

Campaign and equipment

The official Xbox description characterizes the released game as a story campaign with twists, gadgets and upgrades. This establishes the broad shape of play without proving a complete inventory of weapons, mission types or progression rules. Those details should not be reconstructed as if they were documented by the sources available here.

In practical terms, the original is the option for someone who wants a finished campaign and the multiplayer modes that shipped with the game. Its design is fixed by the 2000 release rather than by a modern reboot’s proposed feature list.

Multiplayer and the Expansion Pak

Nintendo’s specification is unusually precise: the Expansion Pak is required for solo missions and three- or four-player modes. That is the useful buying and setup fact for original-hardware owners. It does not mean every way of accessing the 2010 Xbox edition requires the accessory, and it does not establish a complete list of every multiplayer mode.

What the 2024 reboot planned

The 2024 project was presented by Xbox Wire as a reboot, not a remaster of the 2000 game. The developers described a new story and universe that drew inspiration from the first two games while being designed so that previous knowledge was not required. Xbox Wire’s Joe Skrebels quoted the team’s aim this way: “For previous fans and new players alike, the new game offers a fresh take on the secret agent experience, and is a great opportunity to jump into the world and character.”

Every feature in this section is an announced intention, not a tested feature of a released product. Development ended before players could verify how the systems worked together, how large the missions were, or how much freedom the final game would have offered.

Planned mission structure

The team described single-player missions in which players could choose how to complete objectives. The intended design combined several traditions: first-person shooting, immersive-sim-style problem solving and stealth-action. That combination suggests a broader approach than a straightforward corridor shooter, but it is not evidence of a final mission count, branching campaign or completed simulation system.

Planned movement and combat

The announced toolset included parkour-style traversal, melee combat and gunplay. Players were also expected to use stealth, gadgets and scanning to investigate spaces and approach objectives. The developers described lethal and non-lethal options, indicating that the planned game would have supported different approaches to encounters rather than requiring every problem to be solved with gunfire.

  • Increases screen resolution from 320 X 240 pixels up to 640 X 480 pixels

Because the project was canceled, no reliable comparison can be made about responsiveness, enemy behavior, level design, difficulty, animation quality or whether the systems felt coherent. Those are properties of a shipped game, and this one never reached that stage.

Gameplay comparison: shipped systems versus announced systems

Gameplay area 2000 release 2024 reboot plan What can be concluded
Perspective and genre Released first-person shooter. Planned first-person shooter influenced by immersive sims and stealth-action. The original can be played and assessed; the reboot’s genre blend remained a design statement.
Objectives Story campaign is confirmed, but the official descriptions do not establish a detailed mission-by-mission structure. Single-player missions were intended to allow choices in how objectives were completed. Player-choice ambitions belong only to the canceled project.
Combat Combat is part of the released shooter, with no complete weapon-system specification established here. Planned gun combat and melee, with lethal or non-lethal approaches. Do not treat the reboot’s combat options as available content.
Stealth Not characterized in the official summary as a distinct modern system. Explicitly planned as a central approach alongside shooting. The reboot was designed around more deliberate approach variety, but it cannot be tested.
Gadgets and upgrades Official Xbox copy confirms gadgets and upgrades in the campaign. Gadgets and scanning were announced as tools for investigation and objective completion. Both descriptions mention equipment, but their functions and scope are not equivalent.
Traversal No specific traversal system is established in the cited material. Parkour-style traversal was planned. There is no released 2024 movement model to compare with the original.
Multiplayer Released multiplayer, including three- and four-player N64 modes that require the Expansion Pak. No shipped multiplayer feature. The original is the only one of the two with an available multiplayer experience.

Story, characters and setting

The 2000 game

The official material available for this comparison confirms that the original has a story campaign with twists, gadgets and upgrades. It does not establish a sufficiently detailed plot summary to responsibly recount every character, faction or mission from memory. If you need a complete narrative guide, consult a dedicated contemporary game reference; this comparison does not add unsupported story details.

What can be stated confidently is that the 2000 release presents a completed secret-agent first-person-shooter campaign, while its Xbox listing preserves the campaign and multiplayer as the core product description.

The canceled reboot’s Cairo premise

The reboot would have followed Joanna Dark, voiced by Alix Wilton Regan, with visual likeness by Elissa Bibaud. She was described as an agent for dataDyne. Its “Cascade” premise imagined environmental disasters that left regions inhospitable. In the near-future setting, the corporation Core Mantis deployed the GEN Network in Cairo and claimed that the system could restore ecological balance.

Joanna’s assignment was to enter Cairo, find and apprehend Daniel Carrington, and investigate who could be trusted and what motives sat behind the restoration effort. That premise gives the reboot a different narrative emphasis from simply revisiting the 2000 campaign: ecological collapse, corporate power and uncertainty about the people directing the recovery operation were central to the announced setup.

Xbox described the story and universe as entirely new while still taking inspiration from earlier games. “Reboot” therefore means continuity of name, character lineage and thematic inspiration rather than a scene-for-scene remake of the Nintendo 64 plot.

What “reboot” means here

A reboot can retain recognizable ideas while discarding the original continuity. That is the most accurate reading of this project. Xbox presented it as a fresh entry for returning fans and newcomers, explicitly saying that knowledge of earlier games was not required. The Cairo setting, Cascade disaster premise, dataDyne connection and Daniel Carrington investigation were part of the new framework, not a published expansion of the 2000 campaign.

This also explains why a direct feature checklist can mislead. The original’s gadgets and upgrades describe a finished product whose behavior players can experience. The reboot’s scanning, parkour, stealth and non-lethal choices describe goals for a different game. Similar vocabulary does not demonstrate identical mechanics, controls or progression.

Platforms and availability

Version Availability and date Important qualification
Original Nintendo 64 release Nintendo 64; Nintendo’s UK page lists May 19, 2000. GameSpot’s record lists May 22, 2000, as the first-release date. The differing dates likely represent regional or database dating. An Expansion Pak is required for solo missions and three- and four-player modes.
2010 Xbox version Part of the Xbox release lineage from 2010. The current Xbox store lists play on Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and Xbox Cloud Gaming, and says it is included in Rare Replay. Store catalogs and cloud availability can change. Check the current listing for your account and region.
2024 reboot No released platform version. Microsoft canceled development on July 2, 2025, and The Initiative closed. The project had no announced release window.

Why the Xbox listing matters

The Xbox store entry is more useful than a generic “Xbox version” label because it identifies the current ways Microsoft presents the 2010 release: Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and Xbox Cloud Gaming. It also identifies Rare Replay as the collection containing the game. Availability is a catalog fact, not a promise that every region, subscription or cloud entitlement will remain unchanged, so check the live store page before purchase.

What an N64 owner needs

An original-console setup involves more than finding a cartridge. Nintendo’s specification makes the Expansion Pak a functional requirement for solo missions and for three- or four-player modes. If you are shopping for a used Nintendo 64 Expansion Pak, verify that it is genuine, working and compatible with your console; condition and price vary in the second-hand market. The accessory requirement does not apply to the Xbox release.

Which version should you play?

Choose the N64 release if original hardware matters

The N64 edition is the historically original form of the 2000 game. It is the relevant choice for collectors, people preserving an original-console setup and anyone specifically seeking the Nintendo 64 presentation. Plan for the Expansion Pak if you want solo missions or three- and four-player modes, and verify the condition and compatibility of any accessory before buying.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose the Xbox version for current console access

The 2010 Xbox version is the practical route for players using modern Xbox hardware or cloud play. The current store listing identifies Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and Xbox Cloud Gaming as play options and includes the title in Rare Replay. Because digital catalogs and cloud rights are subject to change, treat that listing as a current-status snapshot rather than a permanent guarantee.

Do not search for a playable 2024 edition

There is no retail, digital or cloud version of the reboot to select. Any video, concept material or promotional demonstration associated with its 2024 reveal documents an intended project, not a product that can be installed today. The cancellation and closure announcement ended development before a release window was announced.

What the cancellation means for comparisons

The cancellation is not a minor delay or an early-access situation. Microsoft confirmed that development stopped and The Initiative closed on July 2, 2025. Since no release window had been announced, there is no postponed date to track and no supported platform on which to play a finished build.

Pre-release footage can still show the direction the team wanted to take, but it cannot answer questions about final performance, mission variety, artificial intelligence, accessibility, pricing, technical requirements or multiplayer. Treat demonstrations as design evidence only. A listing that describes the reboot as available, or that assigns it a retail price, would be inaccurate.

Why the two titles are easy to confuse

Both projects use the Perfect Dark name and Joanna Dark as a central reference, but they occupy different historical categories. The 2000 game is a finished Nintendo 64 release with a later Xbox version. The 2024 project was a new universe and story, designed to welcome newcomers rather than require knowledge of the earlier campaign.

The most misleading comparison is to list every reboot feature beside the original as though both games shipped. Stealth, parkour, scanning, lethal-versus-non-lethal choices and the proposed objective flexibility describe the developers’ plans. They do not demonstrate a playable ruleset, final controls or completed levels. Conversely, the original’s campaign, gadgets, upgrades and multiplayer are established features, with the N64 Expansion Pak requirement applying only to the specified original-hardware modes.

The released 2000 game has multiplayer. On Nintendo 64, Nintendo specifies that three- and four-player modes require an Expansion Pak. No multiplayer mode shipped for the canceled reboot.

Do I need an Expansion Pak for the Xbox version?

No. Nintendo’s Expansion Pak requirement applies to the original N64 hardware version. The 2010 Xbox release is a separate version lineage.

What platforms support the 2010 version?

The current Xbox listing identifies Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and Xbox Cloud Gaming. It also says the game is included in Rare Replay. Confirm the live store listing for your region because catalogs and cloud rights can change.

Why do release dates differ between May 19 and May 22, 2000?

Nintendo’s UK page lists May 19, while GameSpot’s historical record lists May 22 as the first-release date. The difference likely reflects regional release timing or database conventions rather than two different games.

Bottom line: which Perfect Dark is available?

Perfect Dark (2000) is the only playable game in this comparison. Use the Nintendo 64 version if you want the original hardware experience and can provide the required Expansion Pak for the affected modes; use the 2010 Xbox version if its current Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S or cloud listing suits your setup. The 2024 title is best understood as a canceled reboot concept: its Cairo story and choice-driven stealth-action design explain what the team intended, but there is no finished game, release platform or consumer edition to compare.
