The same cameras and microphones can also record bystanders who do not know they are being filmed. That conflict explains the “pervert glasses” backlash: the accessibility benefit is real, but so are the consent, security and venue-restriction risks.
What the glasses do for blind and low-vision users
Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses look like ordinary eyewear but combine cameras, microphones and an AI assistant. They can take photos and video, handle calls and music, and answer questions about what the wearer is seeing. Meta glasses have sold more than 7 million units worldwide, and IDC estimated they represented approximately 69% of the smart-glasses market in the first quarter of 2026, according to reporting by the Los Angeles Times and The Guardian.

Hands-free visual assistance
Blind users interviewed by The Guardian in 2026 described asking the glasses to describe surroundings, read menus and labels, identify credit-card numbers and read street signs. The advantage is that the wearer does not have to hold a phone, point a camera or wait for another person.

- Checking signs, menus, packaging and payment details while keeping both hands free.
- Getting spoken descriptions while walking through unfamiliar places.
- Making calls or asking questions without taking out a separate device.
Why people call them “pervert glasses”
The label comes from the fear that a person can point a camera at strangers without an obvious phone or conventional filming setup. The backlash intensified after users hid or disabled the recording indicator and posted pickup or prank videos. A person nearby may have no practical way to know whether the glasses are taking a photo, recording video or simply being worn.
Dr Fareed Kaviani, a Monash University research fellow, described “a total lack of the ability for people to not only know if they’re being filmed … but there’s an inability to consent to being filmed.” Australia’s eSafety Commissioner has warned that “the harms linked to covert recording are not hypothetical. They are real and already occurring.”

What the early harassment evidence shows
University of Sydney researchers reviewed 350 public Instagram videos posted from 2023 to 2026. About 60% showed potential harassment, and 43% contained abuse of women in the comments, according to The Guardian’s 2026 report. The sample is an early study of public videos, not a measurement of how often all smart-glasses users harass people. It does, however, document a type of misuse that makes bystanders wary.
Can smart glasses record someone without consent?
Technically, a camera-equipped pair can capture a bystander without that person agreeing. Whether recording is unlawful depends on the country, state, venue and circumstances. Privacy rules, workplace policies, school rules, transport regulations and restrictions on filming in sensitive locations can all apply. A visible light does not by itself make recording lawful or consensual.

Australia’s eSafety guidance recommends three privacy-by-design controls:
- A recording indicator that is clear, always visible and cannot be disabled or obscured.
- Automatic blurring of bystanders who have not given informed consent.
- No public facial-identification capability.
A proposed Australian measure reported by ABC News would pause imports of smart glasses for 12 months, with carve-outs for legitimate vision-impairment uses, and extend privacy rules to individuals. It was proposed legislation, not enacted law, so its status and wording require checking before relying on it.

Meta glasses versus cheap products: security is not interchangeable
Reported prices for Meta versions ranged from roughly $224 to $800 in the Los Angeles Times’ 2026 coverage, depending on the model and configuration. Meta’s spokesperson said: “The people who use them and those around them need to trust them. That’s why we built privacy into our AI glasses from the ground up.” That statement describes the company’s position; it is not proof that every privacy risk has been eliminated.

How to use smart glasses more safely
- Confirm the exact model. Check the manufacturer’s current privacy policy, app permissions, firmware-support period and where recordings are stored or processed.
- Test the indicator before relying on the glasses. Verify that recording lights are visible from the front and cannot be disabled, covered or replaced by a software setting.
- Limit data access. Review Bluetooth pairing, local-network permissions, cloud uploads, voice history and any option that sends images to an AI service.
- Set a consent routine. Tell people before recording them, stop in private or sensitive settings, and follow the venue’s policy even when local law is unclear.
- Check prescription and support details. Confirm that the specific frame accepts the required lenses, that accessibility features work with the phone used, and that software updates remain available.
- Keep a fallback. Carry the phone, a human-support option or another reading aid for situations where connectivity, battery life or venue rules prevent use.
Should privacy-conscious buyers choose Ray-Ban Meta glasses?
There is no universal yes or no. For a blind user who values hands-free descriptions and has verified the privacy controls, the documented accessibility gains may justify choosing a mainstream model with ongoing software support. For someone who regularly enters places that prohibit cameras, or who cannot accept any possibility of bystander recording, the same product may be a poor fit.
Before buying, weigh these questions:
- Will the visual-assistance features solve a frequent problem rather than an occasional curiosity?
- Can the recording indicator remain visible in every setting where the glasses will be used?
- Are the manufacturer, app and cloud practices acceptable for the wearer’s threat model?
- Can the glasses be removed or replaced immediately when a venue, employer or another person objects?
- Is model-specific security information available, rather than relying on a generic claim about “smart glasses”?
What needs to change
The dispute is not simply between accessibility and privacy. Better design could support both. Non-disableable indicators would make recording easier to notice. Automatic blurring could reduce exposure of unconsenting bystanders. A firm ban on identifying members of the public would limit one of the most intrusive uses. Clearer venue rules and enforceable privacy protections would also give blind users access without making them responsible for solving every design failure themselves.
David Shoebridge, an Australian Greens senator, summarized the policy argument this way: “The genie’s not yet out of the bottle … let’s put a little plug in it until we work out what we want it to do.” The practical takeaway is equally direct: smart glasses can be valuable assistive technology, but buyers and bystanders need privacy controls that are visible, tamper-resistant and backed by enforceable rules.
