People Are Selling AI Clones of Dead Relatives for as Little as $150

Companies in China have advertised digital replicas of deceased relatives for roughly $140 to $150. These are not robots or physical memorials: they are software services that generate text, cloned speech and an animated face from a person’s recordings, photographs and writing.

The result can resemble a loved one in a chat or video, but it is an AI simulation—not the person who died. Reported prices range from a few dollars a month for voice messages to about $30 for a basic avatar and approximately $150 for higher-fidelity replica packages.

What the reported $150 service actually is

Futurism reported on May 14, 2024 that Chinese providers were offering AI replicas of dead relatives for as little as $140–$150, down from prices above $1,000 a few years earlier. The figure is a reported low-end price for a digital service in China, not a universal rate or the price of a physical product.

A typical system combines three parts:

  • A language model that generates replies in a style associated with the deceased person.
  • Voice cloning that turns generated text into synthetic speech.
  • An avatar or video layer that animates a face in a phone or computer interface.

The software can respond to typed messages, send voice notes or appear as a talking video. It does not contain a consciousness, memories or a continuing relationship with the deceased.

How providers build an AI replica

  1. Collect source material. Families may submit voice recordings, photographs, videos, social-media posts, letters and diaries. Better recordings generally provide more material for voice and appearance matching.
  2. Train or configure the models. A language model is prompted or tuned with the person’s words and biographical details. A voice system learns vocal characteristics, while an avatar system maps a face and mouth movements to generated speech.
  3. Create an interface. The service connects the models to a chat app, voice-message tool or video avatar. Some companies add human monitoring of conversations.
  4. Deliver the simulation. Users can ask questions or send messages, receiving a response generated in real time or from prepared material.

When family recordings are limited, some providers have used the person’s public social-media presence as additional source material. That may make a bot sound more plausible, but it also increases privacy and consent concerns.

Reported prices and formats

Reported offering Price Format Data or conditions mentioned
Arthur Wu’s voice-message service 52.1 yuan (about $7.20) per month Voice messages; text bots were reported as free Wu’s business used Baidu’s Ernie and ElevenLabs
Silicon Intelligence basic avatar 199 yuan (about $30) Animated avatar NPR reported that less than one minute of high-quality audio and video was required
Low-end replica packages reported by Futurism About $140–$150 Digital replica service; exact features vary Reported as a Chinese market price, not a standardized global package

These figures are not an independent quality rating. A monthly voice service, a one-time avatar setup and a more elaborate package are different products, so the cheapest quote cannot be compared directly with the most realistic result.

Companies and the size of the market

Silicon Intelligence

Nanjing-based Silicon Intelligence has been described as an early provider. Its cofounder, Sun Kai, commissioned an avatar of his mother, who died in 2019. Futurism and NPR identified the company as a pioneer in the market.

Arthur Wu’s Beijing business

Rest of World reported that Wu’s service used Baidu’s Ernie for text and ElevenLabs for voice. That reporting described about 2,000 users and 100 paying customers. Staff monitored chats for harmful statements and ended one account after an 18-hour session because of concerns about addiction.

Fushouyuan International Group

The Chinese funeral-services company Fushouyuan International Group was reported to be developing avatars that could appear at a deceased person’s memorial service. That points to a possible funeral-industry use, but it does not establish that such a service is broadly available or regulated.

Futurism reported that two companies had served more than 2,000 clients combined while also describing the sector as small compared with China’s population. There is no standardized independent test showing how accurately these services reproduce a person’s voice, appearance or personality.

Why some grieving people find the simulations meaningful

Users can understand that the system is artificial and still experience an emotional response. Rest of World quoted Yancy Zhu saying, “The experience made up for what I missed out with my dad.” Another user told the publication, “I know he can’t be replaced.”

Sun Kai recalled his mother’s repeated phrase, “Have you eaten yet?” A familiar expression generated in a familiar voice can make an interaction feel intimate, especially when a death was sudden or the family has few recordings.

That comfort is a reported personal experience, not evidence that AI replicas treat grief or improve mental-health outcomes. The available reporting does not establish robust clinical evidence about whether these systems help people recover.

Consent is the central safeguard—and it is not consistent

NPR reported that Silicon Intelligence and another provider required authorization from the person being cloned or, when that person was deceased, authorization from family members plus proof of kinship. Those policies are company requirements, not a universal legal standard.

Consent can be difficult after death. A relative may control photographs or recordings without knowing whether the deceased would have wanted an interactive replica, how long it should operate or who should be allowed to use it. A responsible provider should be able to explain:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Who may authorize the clone and what proof is required.
  • Who owns uploaded recordings, generated voice files and avatar models.
  • Whether data is used to train other systems or shared with contractors.
  • How long data is retained and how a family can delete it.
  • Who can pause, transfer or permanently retire the bot.

Douyin warned creators against recreating deceased people without family permission. Unauthorized celebrity recreations show that a recognizable face or voice can be copied even when no estate or family has approved it.

When an AI clone becomes a deception tool

Rest of World reported cases in which customers used clones to hide a death from children or elderly relatives. In one example, fake voice messages claimed that the deceased person had gone abroad on a secret mission. That is materially different from a clearly labeled memorial conversation: it deliberately causes another person to believe that someone is alive.

Any service used with children, vulnerable adults or people who have not consented should be treated as a high-risk deception. A disclosure that the voice or video is AI-generated should be visible in the interface and repeated when the system is shared with someone new.

Psychological risks and unresolved ethical questions

Dependency and prolonged grief

Craig Klugman of DePaul University has raised questions about ownership, privacy, confidentiality and efficacy. He also warned that griefbots could contribute to dependency or complicated grief. Nathan Mladin of Theos told Rest of World: “If you don’t move on [from grieving], that can be quite damaging. [The bots] could stop people from resuming their lives.”

Simulated comfort versus accepting death

Philosopher Michel Puech told NPR: “Having too much consoling, too much satisfying experience of a dead person will apparently annihilate the experience, and the grief, of death.” The concern is not that every conversation is harmful; it is that an always-available, agreeable simulation may encourage avoidance rather than remembrance.

Monitoring and crisis response

Wu’s staff reportedly watched conversations for harmful statements and intervened when a user showed distress. That is an important feature to ask about, but it is not a substitute for a licensed mental-health professional or an emergency service. Providers should state what happens when a user expresses suicidal thoughts, becomes unable to stop chatting or asks the bot for medical advice.

Rules proposed by ethicists

Klugman summarized proposed guidance that includes adult-only access, informed consent from data subjects, heirs and mourners, and clear rules for retiring bots. Those proposals are not a complete, universally adopted legal framework.

Questions to ask before paying for a service

  • What exactly am I buying? Confirm whether the quote covers text, voice, video, an avatar, setup, revisions and ongoing hosting.
  • Is the charge recurring? The reported 52.1-yuan price is monthly, while other figures were described as a basic avatar price or a replica package.
  • What data is required? Ask whether a short recording is enough, whether social-media scraping is permitted and whether original files can be removed.
  • How is consent verified? Require a documented family-authorization process and proof-of-kinship rules.
  • Is the bot labeled as artificial? Do not use an unlabeled clone to persuade another person that the deceased is alive.
  • Who monitors safety? Ask whether humans review distress signals, what hours they cover and how accounts are paused.
  • Can the bot be retired? Get a written deletion and shutdown process before uploading irreplaceable recordings.
  • Where is it available? The reported services concern China; availability, language support, payment methods and data jurisdiction may differ elsewhere.

Can AI bring back someone who died?

No. It can reproduce selected patterns from recordings and text: a likely phrase, a vocal timbre, a face moving with generated speech or a response shaped by old posts. It cannot restore the person’s awareness, new memories, private intentions or ability to consent after death.

The most accurate description is a griefbot or AI avatar based on personal data. Treating it as a memorial tool requires clear disclosure, family consent, strict privacy controls and an option to stop using it—not a claim that digital resurrection has occurred.
