PennyMac Financial Services (NYSE: PFSI) reported $22 million in GAAP net income and diluted EPS of $0.41 for the second quarter of 2026. Its company-defined adjusted results were substantially higher: adjusted net income of $74 million and adjusted diluted EPS of $1.39. The gap makes it important to read both sets of figures, not treat the adjusted result as a replacement for GAAP.
PFSI’s July 29 results covered the quarter ended June 30, 2026. The company also reported $34.9 billion of loan acquisitions and originations in unpaid principal balance (UPB), and a $488 billion owned servicing portfolio at quarter-end. Those measures describe operating scale, but they do not by themselves explain profitability or make PFSI directly comparable with broader mortgage-finance companies.

Why did PFSI earnings fall short?
Management attributed the shortfall against expectations to higher interest rates during the quarter. Chairman and CEO David Spector said, “While our operational execution remained solid, our results fell short of expectations due to higher interest rates during the period. As a result, we are actively taking steps to realign our cost structure to enhance profitability.” This is management’s explanation and stated response, not a standalone demonstration of how much any one factor changed earnings.
Rates can matter to mortgage businesses through several channels, including borrower demand and refinancing activity, servicing-rights valuation, prepayments and hedging. PFSI’s quarterly filing discusses mortgage servicing rights, loans eligible for repurchase, loans held for sale, leverage and cash from operating activities. Those topics provide accounting and balance-sheet context, but a specific claim about the direction or cause of a balance-sheet change should be tied to the relevant filing detail.

How does PFSI compare with Rocket and Rithm?
Rocket Companies and Rithm Capital offer useful mortgage-finance context, but neither is a like-for-like substitute for PFSI. Rocket describes itself as a broader homeownership platform; Rithm is also a broader platform that includes Newrez. Their business scope and reported earnings measures differ. The table puts each company’s own Q2 2026 headline figures side by side without treating them as harmonized measures.

| Rocket Companies | $2.78 billion net revenue; $229 million GAAP net income; $2.76 billion adjusted revenue; $441 million adjusted net income | Rocket’s August 6, 2026 release reports its own measures and reflects a broader homeownership platform. Its revenue and adjusted figures are not directly interchangeable with PFSI’s. |
| Rithm Capital | $338.9 million earnings available for distribution; $0.60 per diluted common share | “Earnings available for distribution” is Rithm’s measure, not GAAP net income or a measure equivalent to PFSI’s adjusted net income. |

What matters beyond headline EPS?
A more useful comparison starts with what each business does and then asks how its operating activity translated into financial results. PFSI describes its focus as producing and servicing U.S. mortgage loans and managing investments related to the U.S. mortgage market. Its investor-relations profile sets out that business description.
Best Value
- Production: PFSI’s $34.9 billion of loan acquisitions and originations in UPB indicates quarterly volume. Volume alone does not disclose the profitability of production; margins and other reported production metrics matter too.
- Servicing: The $488 billion owned servicing portfolio is a UPB measure at June 30, 2026, not a measure of servicing income. Servicing economics can include recurring fees as well as valuation and hedging effects.
- Rates and valuation: Interest rates can affect origination conditions and servicing-related valuations through different channels. The filing is needed to understand how those effects appear in PFSI’s accounts; management’s explanation should not be treated as a quantified attribution.
- Capital and shareholder returns: Leverage, cash flows, book value and dividends can help distinguish operating performance from balance-sheet effects and distributions. PFSI’s 10-Q provides balance-sheet and cash-flow detail; the $0.30 dividend per share is a separate shareholder-return figure, not an earnings measure.
What the quarter says—and what it does not
PFSI combined substantial production and servicing scale with lower GAAP than adjusted reported profitability in Q2 2026. The gap between $22 million GAAP net income and $74 million adjusted net income is central to interpreting the quarter. Meanwhile, the peer figures show why a simple league table would mislead: the companies report under different business scopes and, in Rithm’s case, a distinct earnings measure.
For a fuller assessment, read PFSI’s adjusted reconciliation together with its GAAP results and 10-Q, then compare business drivers and balance-sheet context rather than relying on a single EPS or revenue figure.
