Penguin Colony is worth watching if you want an unconventional horror adventure rather than a guided action game. Origame Digital’s PC game puts you in control of several penguin species in 1939 Antarctica, where Nazi relic hunters, the Kaitiaki guardians and Lovecraftian beings converge. Its body-switching traversal, word-based collectibles and deliberately rough low-poly style create a distinctive experience, although hands-on coverage also reports occasional audio and control bugs and a story that can be opaque.
What is Penguin Colony?
Penguin Colony is a semi-open-world exploration and psychological-horror adventure from Origame Digital, published by Fellow Traveller. Steam lists a downloadable demo and a planned PC release on October 16, 2026. Creative Bloq has also reported a Nintendo Switch 2 version planned for 2026; that timing should be checked against the latest official listing.

The game is described as a faithful re-imagining and expansion of H.P. Lovecraft’s At the Mountains of Madness and The Shadow Out of Time. It combines Antarctic expedition horror with a perspective rarely given in this kind of story: the native animals watching human outsiders destroy themselves.

The action takes place in Antarctica in 1939. Nazi explorers arrive looking for relics that might support Aryan-race myths. They encounter ancient beings and mistake one of them for an Aryan king, turning a supernatural discovery into another project of appropriation and invented history.

Opposing them are the Kaitiaki, a guardian group trying to return the ancient power to slumber rather than extract it. Penguins investigate the expeditions, abandoned installations and the psychological collapse of the humans inside them. The central conflict is therefore not simply humans versus monsters: it is extraction and myth-making against guardianship and belonging.
Developer Naphtali Faulkner, who is Ngāi Te Rangi, explains the reversal at the heart of the game: “The penguin is having a great time because it’s supposed to be there. Antarctica is its home. It’s these European guys who don’t belong there who are having the worst day of their lives.” That framing makes the penguin an Indigenous, place-based viewpoint on a colonial horror narrative.

How exploration and penguin abilities work
Levels are small, linear open worlds built around traversal and investigation rather than a conventional combat loop. You move by hopping, swimming and belly-sliding across snow and ice, then switch into nearby penguins when a different body is better suited to the terrain.

The world contains snowfields, ice floes, crevasses, stone labyrinths, obelisks and abandoned human structures. Collectibles are words rather than ordinary treasure, encouraging players to read the landscape as a set of clues. Cryptic notes, photographs and soundbites add context without turning the game into a heavily signposted linear tour.

Is Penguin Colony scary?
Yes, but its horror is psychological, thematic and often strange rather than a constant sequence of jump scares. The cheerful movement of a penguin through a Nazi catastrophe is an intentional tonal joke. The same contrast can make disturbing scenes more pointed: the animal belongs in Antarctica, while the supposedly powerful human visitors become disoriented and terrified.
Faulkner says, “The scariest thing about Lovecraft is how it makes assumptions about things and all the white characters just nod along with it.” The game confronts Lovecraft’s racism instead of presenting the source material as politically neutral. Its horror asks what happens when colonial characters treat their own myths as universal truth.

The project’s stated influences include Lovecraft, The Thing and David Lynch. Expect an investigative atmosphere, cryptic evidence and deliberate narrative dissonance rather than a neatly explained monster chronology.
Visual style and technical caveats
Penguin Colony intentionally resembles an early-console low-poly game. The Guardian described its environments as similar to a hallucinated PlayStation 2 game, while Faulkner called the look “a souped up PS2 game. Kind of like if you were making a PS2 game and had the power of a PS3.” The angular geometry and stark Antarctic spaces support the dreamlike mood instead of aiming for photorealism.

The trade-off is roughness. Hands-on coverage praised the layering of space, time and narrative but noted a small number of audio glitches and control bugs. Those issues do not define the concept, but players who expect polished modern presentation should wait for launch updates and judge the demo on their own hardware.
What the reviews suggest
The Guardian called the game “an audacious, frequently brilliant retelling” of Lovecraft’s 1936 novella. Its assessment highlights four useful expectations:
- Exploration over guidance: the freedom to investigate can also feel opaque.
- Traversal variety: switching between penguin bodies gives movement a mechanical purpose, not just a visual gimmick.
- Atmosphere over polish: the low-poly presentation is distinctive, while occasional technical problems remain.
- Thematic ambition over conventional coherence: the climax targets Lovecraft’s racism and Nazi barbarism, even when the narrative becomes intentionally dissonant.
That makes the game a poor fit for anyone seeking a straightforward action-horror campaign with explicit objectives. It is a stronger match for players who enjoy environmental clues, unusual protagonists and stories willing to leave some connections unresolved.

Steam lists the PC edition, a downloadable demo and October 16, 2026 as the planned release date. A Switch 2 edition has been reported for 2026, but the available reporting does not establish its exact launch day or feature parity with PC. Check the current store pages before purchasing, especially if platform timing determines your decision.
The most relevant companion reading is Lovecraft’s At the Mountains of Madness, the novella that the game reimagines. Reading it is optional, but it provides context for the Antarctic expedition framework and lets you see where the game expands, challenges and reframes the original.
