PDFShift is a hosted API that converts HTML, whether raw markup or a web page URL, into PDF files. Product Hunt’s alternatives directory lists ten other products: PDFMonkey, Robolly, Doppio, PDF Hippo, Transactional.dev, CraftMyPDF, tailwindpdf, PDF.to, Cassiopeia, and ScreenshotOne. Its introduction also mentions DocSpring. The directory is a discovery list, not a ranking, and nothing reviewed for this article shows any of these services beating PDFShift on speed, rendering fidelity, or price. The right choice depends on what you are converting, how many documents you produce, and what your data rules require. The sections below explain what PDFShift publishes about itself, what it costs at the published rates, and how to run a fair comparison at your own volume.
What PDFShift does
PDFShift describes itself as an API for converting HTML documents into PDF files. Its official FAQ says the service accepts HTML documents, website URLs, and Canvas objects, and it names invoice generation and exporting graphics output as examples. The PDFShift homepage also describes screenshot and Open Graph image use cases, so the product is not limited to documents.

The vendor advertises CSS3 support, including web fonts, flexbox, grid, and responsive layouts. It also lists custom CSS and JavaScript injection, headers and footers, encryption and watermarking, webhooks, and parallel or asynchronous conversions. These are the vendor’s own descriptions. No independent test of rendering quality, speed, security, or individual features was found for this article, so treat them as claims to verify with your own documents. The product’s FAQ and homepage are the primary references for current behavior.

Published usage limits and pricing
PDFShift’s pricing is based on credits, and the credit definition depends on output size rather than page count. The figures below are as published on the vendor’s pages in October 2026. Plan prices and limits change, so confirm them on the pricing and FAQ pages before you budget.
#1 Best Overall
| Item | Published figure | Where the vendor states it |
|---|---|---|
| Free plan | 50 credits per month | Homepage |
| Credit definition | One credit covers a conversion of up to 5 MB of generated output. Larger outputs consume additional credits. | FAQ |
| Free-plan example limits | 15 MB maximum file size and 30-second timeout | Homepage example |
| Typical customer example | 1,250 credits per month | FAQ example |
| Boost plan example | $24 per month for 2,500 credits | FAQ example |
| Overage example | $0.03 per conversion above plan limits | FAQ example |
Because the credit is tied to output size, estimate usage from the PDFs you actually generate. Count the output size of a heavy report, not a typical one-page invoice, and multiply by your expected monthly volume. Competitors use their own credit, page, or document definitions, so compare totals per month rather than unit prices.
Vendor-reported performance and scale figures
The PDFShift homepage reports several headline numbers. Each is the vendor’s own figure, and none was independently verified:
Rank #2
- Keep track of everything from attendance to test scores
- Spiral bound
- Measures 8-1/2" x 11"
- 86+ million conversions, with no measurement period or publication year stated on the page.
- 56,000+ developers, with no date stated on the page.
- 1.5-second average conversion time, with no measurement method or document mix stated. It is not a like-for-like figure against any competitor’s claim unless both are measured on the same documents.
- 99.99% uptime, with no measurement period stated.
Use these figures as context about the vendor’s marketing, not as evidence that PDFShift is faster or more reliable than another service.
The alternatives Product Hunt lists
Product Hunt’s PDFShift alternatives page lists the following services. The page is a directory of products that users associate with PDFShift, so inclusion does not mean a service is a direct substitute.
Rank #3
- PDFMonkey
- Robolly
- Doppio
- PDF Hippo
- Transactional.dev
- CraftMyPDF
- tailwindpdf
- PDF.to
- Cassiopeia
- ScreenshotOne
- DocSpring (mentioned in the page introduction)
Product Hunt’s descriptions are brief. Doppio is described as an HTML-to-PDF and image API, the closest match to PDFShift’s core function. Other entries are described as PDF automation or generation tools, but the directory does not map every description to every name, so do not assume a category from the list alone. Check each provider’s current documentation for supported inputs, output options, and limits before you add it to a shortlist.
PDFShift’s origin, as described on Product Hunt
The PDFShift Product Hunt page says the product launched in 2018. In Product Hunt discussion, its maker Cyril explained that generating invoice PDFs was the original pain point. In a reply about running headless Chrome on Google App Engine, Cyril said that setup required more work than PDFShift’s POST-call workflow, and he described a 20-second conversion test at that time.
Rank #4
That account is historical maker commentary from a past setup. It is not a current benchmark, and it says nothing about how today’s infrastructure or the alternatives perform.

Product Hunt discussion surfaces a question that captures the comparison well: how a large vendor’s offering compares to PDFShift on pricing, availability, customizability, and rendering fidelity. Those four axes, plus the operational questions below, are what a fair comparison should answer. The directory and vendor pages do not answer them for each competitor, which is why the testing method below matters more than any list.

How to run a fair comparison
- Build a fixture set. Collect five to ten documents that represent production work, including the hardest case: custom fonts, charts, tables that break across pages, images, and any content rendered by JavaScript.
- Use identical inputs. Send the same HTML, CSS, fonts, and assets to every candidate. Keep a copy of each output and check page breaks, embedded fonts, image quality, and headers and footers page by page.
- Measure timing at your real concurrency. Run the fixture set at the number of simultaneous requests you expect at peak. Record median and 95th-percentile times rather than a single average, and note any failed or timed-out requests.
- Test the limits. Find the largest output you need to produce and check it against each provider’s maximum file size, timeout, and page limits. Confirm what happens when a limit is exceeded.
- Calculate monthly cost. Multiply your expected monthly documents by each provider’s current credit or document definition. Add overage at your projected volume, and include the plan you would need to avoid overage.
- Review privacy terms. Confirm document retention, processing location, the contract terms that apply, and the evidence behind any compliance claim you depend on.
- Evaluate integration effort. Compare API ergonomics, language examples, how output is delivered (direct response, stored file link, or webhook), monitoring options, and how much code you must maintain.
A vendor’s 1.5-second average is only meaningful against a competitor’s number if both were measured on the same documents. Your own fixture results are the figure that should drive the decision.
Choosing by use case
| Use case | What to prioritize in testing | PDFShift features relevant to the use case |
|---|---|---|
| Invoices and documents built from application data | Template rendering with real line items, long tables that span pages, and consistent output across many records | Invoice generation is a named example on the FAQ page; headers and footers are advertised |
| Converting existing web pages or URLs | Output from live pages that depend on JavaScript, authentication, or external assets, and whether those assets load in time | URL input and custom JavaScript injection are advertised |
| Screenshots and social preview images | Pixel dimensions, image format output, and speed for many small requests | Screenshot and Open Graph image use cases appear on the homepage; ScreenshotOne is also on the Product Hunt list |
| Regulated or sensitive documents | Retention settings, processing location, contract terms, and compliance evidence | Encryption and watermarking are advertised; compliance claims need verification (see below) |
| High-volume or bursty workloads | Behavior under concurrent load, retry handling, and webhook reliability | Parallel and asynchronous conversions and webhooks are advertised |
Privacy and compliance claims
PDFShift states on its homepage that it does not store documents unless you request storage. It also says its conversion technology is HIPAA compliant. Both are vendor statements. They were not independently verified for this article.
If you handle health, financial, or personal data, do not rely on a homepage statement. Request the vendor’s current written terms, confirm retention behavior and storage settings in your account, and check with your compliance team whether the vendor’s documentation meets your obligations. The same checklist applies to every alternative on the shortlist.
