Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →A black rectangle drawn on a PDF can hide words while leaving the original text in the file. The reliable fix is to use a dedicated redaction command, apply it so the underlying objects are removed, sanitize hidden data separately, and inspect the exported file as an independent artifact. “Client-side” only describes where code runs; it does not prove that a PDF editor removes content or makes no network requests.
Why a black box is not a redaction
PDF pages are assembled from independent objects: text glyphs, images, vector shapes, annotations and metadata. A drawing tool can add a filled rectangle above those objects without changing them. The page looks censored, but text extraction, search, copy-and-paste or accessibility layers may still expose the words underneath.

A Mozilla Bugzilla report documents a user finding that Firefox’s pencil drawing left underlying text extractable. Mozilla’s security team later noted that the feature was labelled “draw” and did not regard the report as a realistic security vulnerability. That report is evidence about the described workflow, not a finding about every Firefox release or every PDF editing path. The practical lesson is broader: a visual overlay is not proof of removal. Read the Mozilla report.
The PDF Association makes the distinction plainly: “If you are trying to remove content from a PDF, it’s essential that you understand the difference between ‘hiding’ and ‘removing’ content.” A redaction operation changes the document so the selected page content is no longer present, rather than merely covered. The client-side repair workflow
Use this sequence whenever confidential information must leave a PDF. Work on a copy so the original remains available for audit or recovery.
1. Preserve the original and define the scope
Duplicate the source file and record which names, account numbers, signatures, images or pages require removal. Include graphics and whole pages in your inventory. A scan, handwriting sample or diagram may contain sensitive information as pixels even when no searchable text exists, so plan a visual review as well as text searches.
2. Mark content with a real redaction tool
Choose an application or SDK that explicitly offers redaction, not a rectangle, highlight, freehand pen or ordinary annotation. In Adobe’s documented desktop interface, open All tools > Redact a PDF, then mark text or images. The same workflow supports searching for text or patterns and marking an entire page when that is the required scope. Adobe’s redaction tutorial describes these controls.
3. Apply the marks
Marking is a preparation stage. Select Apply (or the equivalent command in your product) to commit the redactions. A preview that shows black boxes is not evidence that the operation has been committed. Do not distribute the marked-but-not-applied working file.
4. Sanitize non-visible information
Redacting visible page content and sanitizing hidden data are separate jobs. Adobe defines sanitization as removing metadata, embedded content, scripts and other non-visible elements that can carry sensitive information or create security risk. Run the application’s sanitize or remove-hidden-information command after applying page redactions. Check what the command covers: comments, attachments, document properties, hidden layers, form data and embedded files can require separate handling. Adobe’s redacting and sanitizing documentation explains the distinction.
5. Save a new output
Export to a new filename rather than overwriting the source. Keep the original and the processed copy under the access controls required by your organisation. A new file makes it easier to identify exactly which artifact was reviewed and delivered.
Rank #2
6. Reopen and test the exported artifact
Close the editor, reopen the new file independently and test the sensitive values. Try selecting, searching, copying and extracting text. Inspect every affected page visually at normal and high zoom, and review document properties, comments, attachments, layers and scripts where your tool exposes them. Text extraction will not detect information that exists only as an image, so visual inspection remains necessary. Treat these checks as evidence about this output, not as a universal guarantee for every copy that may have existed earlier.
What “client-side” does—and does not—tell you
Client-side processing means some work occurs in the browser or on the user’s device. It says nothing by itself about whether the tool performs structural removal, whether it sends bytes to a service, or whether temporary copies are retained.
Adobe’s security documentation distinguishes its products: PDF Embed API is described as client-side JavaScript/WebAssembly with specified cloud calls, while the separate PDF Services API uploads user-generated content and temporarily caches it. Those are different data flows. Read the implementation and network documentation for the exact product you deploy, then observe requests in a controlled test. Do not label a browser tool “secure” solely because its interface runs locally. Adobe Document Services security information.
For an in-browser application, document where bytes go, when they go there, how long they persist, and which operations require a server. A product can legitimately be client-side for rendering while using a service for conversion, storage or telemetry. Your privacy statement and threat model should match those actual requests.
Desktop editor route
A desktop editor is the most straightforward path for an individual or team that needs a visible mark-and-apply workflow plus sanitization controls. The Adobe tutorial cited here states that its redaction interface is available in Acrobat Pro, Premium or Studio. That availability and the labels are time-sensitive; the documentation was checked on October 13, 2026, and the help page lists a September 23, 2025 update. Confirm the current edition and commands before standardising a procedure.

The important capability is not the brand name or the colour of the mark. It is the combination of searchable marking, an explicit apply step, hidden-data sanitization and a way to save and inspect a separate output. If an editor offers only drawing annotations, it is not a substitute for that workflow.

Browser and developer-SDK route
Developers embedding PDF editing need to verify the exported bytes, not just the canvas. Ask the SDK vendor how redaction is represented in the document, whether text objects are removed or merely covered, which image and annotation types are supported, and whether sanitization exists as a separate operation. PDF.js Express documentation directs developers seeking true redaction toward PDFTron WebViewer and provides migration guidance; product names and lifecycle details can change, so verify the current documentation before committing to an integration. Build an automated regression fixture containing known sensitive words in ordinary text, rotated text, images, annotations and form fields. After export, run independent text extraction and search, inspect the page rendering, and examine the file’s metadata and attachments. Also test the application with network access restricted or monitored so an accidental upload is visible during development. These checks validate your implementation; they do not turn a vendor claim into a security certification.
Why removal still needs a security review
Deleting the obvious text layer is necessary but may not remove every clue. The 2022 paper Story Beyond the Eye: Glyph Positions Break PDF Text Redaction assessed 11 popular PDF redaction tools. The authors reported that two tools left marked text in place. Other tools removed the text but retained glyph-position information that could reveal properties of the redacted string. In the paper’s Microsoft Word-authored example, the leakage was about 13 bits of information about a redacted surname—enough, in that study’s scenario, to identify one person among roughly 8,000 candidates. These are results from that sample and threat model, not a universal probability that any redacted PDF can be reversed. Read the paper and its figures.

Rasterization also removes selectable text, can reduce quality, increase file size and impair accessibility or search. Consider it a risk-management option for particularly sensitive releases, not an automatic replacement for structural redaction, sanitization and verification.
Choosing an implementation path
| Route | What the documented workflow provides | Questions to verify before release |
|---|---|---|
| Desktop PDF editor with dedicated redact and sanitize commands | Mark text or images, search for text or patterns, redact pages, apply changes and remove hidden data | Which edition includes redaction, what sanitization covers, and how the saved output can be independently inspected |
| Browser editor or developer SDK | In-browser editing can provide local processing, but capabilities and service calls depend on the implementation | Whether bytes leave the device, whether the operation removes underlying objects, supported PDF content types, lifecycle status and available export validation |
For either route, make “remove, sanitize, export, verify” a release gate. A polished black rectangle is only a rendering result.

The hidden word can still be searched
The mark was probably an annotation or drawing, or the redaction was never applied. Return to the working copy, use the dedicated redact command, apply it, export a new file and repeat independent extraction tests.

Search finds nothing, but a scan still reveals information
The sensitive content may be pixels rather than text. Inspect the page image-by-image, mark the region or page, apply the redaction and verify the rendered output. OCR can help locate material, but it does not replace visual checking.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsVisible text is gone, but document properties expose names
Run the separate sanitization step and inspect metadata, comments, attachments, layers, forms and scripts. Visible redaction does not establish that these objects were removed.
A browser tool claims to be local, yet requests appear
Capture the application’s network traffic in a test environment and compare it with the vendor’s security documentation. Identify which operations trigger requests and what data is sent or cached. Change the architecture or tool if its data flow conflicts with your requirements.
The exported file behaves differently in another viewer
Use more than one independent viewer or extractor during acceptance testing. Viewer differences can hide unsupported annotations, layers or malformed content. Preserve the tested output and the test record so the delivered artifact is traceable.
A defensible release checklist
- The source file is preserved and the working copy is identified.
- Sensitive text, images, scans and whole pages were inventoried.
- A dedicated redaction command was used and its changes were applied.
- Hidden information was sanitized with the product’s separate controls.
- A new output file was saved.
- An independent reopen test covered search, selection, copying and extraction.
- Every affected page was visually inspected, including image-only content.
- Metadata, comments, attachments, layers, forms and scripts were reviewed as applicable.
- For browser tools, network requests and temporary storage behavior were documented.
The safe client-side fix is therefore procedural as much as technical: remove the underlying content, clean what is not visible, and test the exact file you intend to share. A box drawn over a PDF can be useful for annotation, but it is not a redaction until the document no longer contains the material it covers.
