There is no evidence-based speed, quality, or price winner among the PDF compression APIs with published terms available here. Adobe documents compression controls and usage limits; pdfRest publishes cloud and deployable pricing models; PDF.co documents a compression endpoint but not enough current commercial and operational terms for a fair high-volume comparison. Shortlist by deployment and billing model, then test each option on the same representative PDFs before committing.
Which PDF compression API is best for high-volume processing?
The best fit depends first on where documents may be processed and how you want to pay. A hosted API charges against a vendor-defined unit such as a document transaction or API call. A deployable toolkit shifts more responsibility for infrastructure, scaling, and operations to your team. Those models are not directly comparable without factoring in workload, compute, and labor.
| Option | What the available documentation establishes | What is not established for a high-volume comparison |
|---|---|---|
| Adobe PDF Services API | Cloud API with compression levels; Adobe describes a Document Transaction model and publishes standard file-size and request-rate limits. Adobe API overview and Adobe licensing and usage limits. | Production price under a particular paid agreement, sustained throughput, and compression results on a representative corpus are not stated in the cited documentation. |
| PDF.co | The API reference documents POST /v2/pdf/compress, with a required source URL and optional configuration and page selection. PDF.co PDF Compress reference. |
High-volume pricing, rate limits, retention, and a comparable throughput commitment are not stated in the cited API reference. |
| pdfRest cloud API | Publishes monthly call allowances, paid-plan prices and overages, upload limits, and retention periods. pdfRest pricing. | Published plan allowances are not, by themselves, a sustained-throughput or service-level commitment. |
| pdfRest deployable toolkit | Offers monthly-call container plans and an AWS deployment priced by EC2 instance type and uptime rather than per API call. pdfRest Container and pdfRest on AWS. | Your actual infrastructure and operating costs depend on deployment and workload; a normalized total cost is not stated. |
Adobe says its API provides “Support for multiple compression levels to retain the quality of images and graphics.” That is a product capability claim, not a comparative test result. PDF.co describes its compression endpoint as “new and improved” and says it offers more granular control with enhanced results; those are also vendor claims, not independent evidence that it will be faster or produce smaller or better-looking files than alternatives.
How do billing units, limits, and deployment models compare?
The available numbers describe different things: Adobe counts Document Transactions and publishes request-per-minute limits, while pdfRest plans include a monthly number of API calls. Neither a monthly quota nor an RPM cap should be treated as a guarantee of sustained production throughput.

Adobe: Document Transactions and request limits
Adobe’s limits documentation, checked in 2026, lists 500 Document Transactions per month in the free tier. For “all other Operations,” which includes document-producing operations such as compression, one transaction covers a document of up to 50 pages. Paid credentials can receive a greater quota under a separate written agreement; the listed free quota is not a paid production price or a universal paid allowance.
The same Adobe documentation lists a 100 MB maximum file size and maximum request rates of 25 requests per minute for Free Tier and 100 requests per minute for Enterprise. These are published standard limits checked in 2026. Confirm account-specific quotas and terms with Adobe before sizing a production system. The Adobe compression how-to demonstrates a REST request with a compressionLevel parameter.
pdfRest cloud: calls, upload thresholds, and retention
pdfRest’s pricing page, checked in 2026, lists these cloud allowances and prices. Its comparison distinguishes a soft included upload size from a hard maximum; the hard maximums and retention periods below are the values stated in the plan comparison.

| Cloud plan | Included calls per month | Listed monthly price | Published overage per call | Hard maximum upload size | Retention period |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Starter | 100 calls/month | Not stated on the cited pricing page | Not stated on the cited pricing page | 100 MB | 5 minutes |
| Premium | 600 calls/month | $9.99/month | $0.115 per call | 250 MB | 30 minutes |
| Pro | 5,000 calls/month | $99.99/month | $0.06 per call | 500 MB | 30 minutes |
| Enterprise | 15,000 calls/month | $349.99/month | $0.035 per call | 1 GB | Custom |
These are published plan terms, not an estimate of total cost for a particular workload. The pricing page also distinguishes soft included upload sizes from hard maximums; check the live plan terms for the included threshold and any file-size-related charges before comparing costs. Pricing and limits can change, so confirm them directly with pdfRest before procurement.
pdfRest container and AWS: software deployment rather than hosted-call pricing
The pdfRest container product page, checked in 2026, lists 2,000 calls per month for $124.99, 6,000 calls per month for $299.99, and 16,000 calls per month for $599.99. The page describes deployment across a range of cloud and container environments. These are software-service plan terms, not prices for a physical product.
pdfRest’s separate AWS option says API calls are unlimited and charges according to EC2 instance type and uptime, rather than per call. It describes a CloudFormation setup that includes load balancing and an Auto Scaling Group. “Unlimited API calls” does not mean unlimited compute capacity: estimate instance costs and validate scaling behavior against the expected workload with pdfRest’s AWS deployment details.

How much does it cost to compress PDFs with an API?
Only pdfRest’s published cloud and deployable plan prices provide a direct dollar figure in the available vendor documentation. Adobe’s free-tier transaction allowance is useful for evaluation, but paid credentials are governed by a separate written agreement; a comparable paid price is not stated here. PDF.co’s cited compression reference does not establish high-volume pricing.
To compare hosted plans, calculate the expected monthly bill using the vendor’s actual billable unit, included allowance, overage rules, and any charges associated with uploads or additional workflow calls. Then add costs that may not appear in the API price: storage, transfer or egress, retries, polling or retrieval calls, compute for self-hosted deployments, and staff time for operating the service. Confirm whether a workflow’s setup, compression, status checks, and result retrieval each count as billable calls or transactions.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhat file-size and rate limits should you check?
Published limits are useful for rejecting an unsuitable plan or shaping a prototype, but they do not answer whether a provider can meet your production workload. Adobe’s documented request-per-minute caps and pdfRest’s monthly included calls are different constraints, and neither should be extrapolated into a sustained throughput guarantee.

- Scanner type: Document
- Connectivity technology: USB
- With Auto Scan Mode, the scanner automatically detects what you're scanning
- Digitize documents and images
- Input size and content: Confirm the hard upload maximum, any soft included threshold or upload surcharge, page-count limits, and behavior for unusually image-heavy PDFs.
- Rate, volume, and bursts: Ask for the applicable quota-reset schedule, burst behavior, concurrency limits, and support escalation path. Get contractual confirmation for any throughput or availability commitment your system requires.
- Failure and recovery: Determine what happens when a request times out or a job fails, whether retries can duplicate billable work, and how idempotency and result retrieval work.
- Account-specific terms: Treat published limits as a starting point. Confirm the actual quota and file constraints on the credentials and plan you expect to use.
Can you run a PDF compression API in your own cloud or container?
Yes, at least one option in this comparison explicitly offers deployable software: pdfRest lists container plans and an AWS toolkit deployment. Its AWS page describes CloudFormation provisioning with load balancing and an Auto Scaling Group. That approach may suit teams seeking control over infrastructure placement, but it also makes compute sizing, scaling, observability, upgrades, and incident response part of the evaluation.
Adobe’s cited API is a cloud service. The cited PDF.co reference documents an API endpoint but does not establish an on-premises, customer-cloud, or container deployment option. If deployment location is a hard requirement, ask vendors to confirm the supported model and contractual data controls rather than inferring them from an API or product label.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to run a fair high-volume evaluation
Use identical inputs and workload assumptions for each shortlisted provider. A useful test corpus should reflect the documents your system actually handles: image-heavy scans, text-based PDFs, mixed pages, forms, and any unusually large or complex files. Keep originals so you can compare outputs and recover if a compressed file fails a downstream requirement.

- AVOIDS PAPER JAMS AND DAMAGE. Features a brake roller system to feed paper smoothly, a multi-feed sensor that detects pages stuck together, and skew detection to prevent paper damage and data loss
- Define the workload. Record expected monthly volume, peak bursts, concurrency, typical and maximum file sizes, page counts, and the proportion of scan-heavy PDFs.
- Set acceptance criteria. Specify minimum size reduction, acceptable image and text legibility, latency targets, failure rate, and any requirements for searchable text, signatures, forms, metadata, or archival preservation.
- Run equivalent jobs. Use the same corpus and, where configurable, document each provider’s compression settings. Do not compare a lightly compressed output from one service with a more aggressive setting from another as if the settings were equivalent.
- Measure results. Track output bytes, visual and text quality, processing latency distribution, errors and retries, and throughput under the target concurrency. A smaller file is not automatically an acceptable file.
- Validate downstream use. Check that text remains searchable when required and that forms, signatures, metadata, and archival constraints still meet your application’s requirements. Compression can alter or invalidate properties your workflow depends on.
- Model total cost and operations. Include billable transactions or calls, overages, file-size charges, multi-step requests, compute, egress, and labor. For a deployable toolkit, include the work of operating the infrastructure as well as its cloud bill.
- Obtain written terms. Confirm volume pricing, quotas, retention and deletion, hosting geography, access controls, support, and any service-level commitments before selecting a provider for regulated or business-critical workloads.
What should procurement confirm before choosing?
The right shortlist is the one that survives both a corpus test and a contract review. In particular, do not decide from a compression preset name, an advertised monthly call count, or a claim of enhanced results alone.
- For PDF.co, obtain current volume pricing, rate and concurrency limits, retention terms, and any throughput or service-level commitments; these are not established by the cited endpoint reference.
- For any provider handling sensitive documents, validate hosting geography, retention, deletion, access controls, and deployment options contractually.
- For cloud and toolkit plans, compare the same monthly workload and include every relevant call, transaction, upload, compute, egress, and operations cost.
- For every candidate, decide how to preserve or verify text, signatures, forms, metadata, and archival properties after compression.
On the documented terms alone, Adobe and pdfRest offer different, quantifiable starting points, while PDF.co remains a candidate requiring more commercial and operational confirmation. None can be named the high-volume performance winner without representative testing and comparable vendor commitments.
