For most desktops, a good PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD is already fast enough. PCIe 5.0 becomes worthwhile when you regularly sustain very large transfers, run storage-heavy creative or engineering workloads, or want maximum bandwidth and have a PCIe 5.0 x4 M.2 slot with adequate cooling. It does not automatically make every boot, application launch, or game load twice as fast.
The practical answer: choose based on workload, platform and thermals
The interface generation is only one part of SSD performance. PCIe 5.0 provides more link bandwidth than PCIe 4.0, but an application must generate enough storage traffic to use it. The clearest gains appear in sustained sequential transfers and demanding random-I/O workloads, where the drive can keep more of the link busy. SanDisk describes the difference between the generations as most evident in sequential and random I/O operations.

For office software, web browsing, normal Windows use and many game loads, the storage device is often not the only limit. CPU work, asset decompression, shader compilation, memory, network delivery and software design can dominate the wait. The vendor material available for this comparison does not establish one neutral, universal percentage improvement for booting, launching applications or gaming, so a claim that Gen5 will halve those times is not justified.
A Gen5 purchase makes the most sense when all of these are true:

If one of those conditions is missing, a high-quality Gen4 drive is usually the more balanced choice.
What changes between PCIe 4.0 and PCIe 5.0?
The interface is a data path, not a guaranteed application-speed multiplier
PCIe is the connection between the SSD and the rest of the system. Moving from Gen4 to Gen5 increases the available link bandwidth, allowing a compatible drive to transfer more data when the workload is large and sustained enough. It does not change the amount of data an application needs, remove CPU processing, or make software issue I/O more efficiently.
An SSD also has a controller, NAND flash, firmware, cache and thermal limits. A benchmark that reaches a very high peak on a fresh drive may not represent a long copy after the cache is exhausted. For that reason, interface generation should be treated as a capability rather than a promise about every task.

Sequential and random I/O measure different behavior
Sequential throughput describes large, contiguous transfers such as copying a video project or staging a dataset. These are the strongest Gen5 use cases because the drive can keep the interface busy for an extended period.
Random I/O describes smaller requests scattered across the drive. Queue depth matters: a workstation rendering several tasks can issue many requests at once, while a lightly used desktop may not. Random IOPS figures therefore need the test’s queue depth, transfer size and software specified before two drives can be compared fairly.
Neither figure alone predicts an application’s completion time. A real task can mix sequential and random requests, pause for CPU work, wait on another device or hit a software bottleneck.

Where PCIe 5.0 can make a measurable difference
Large video and media projects
High-resolution video workflows can repeatedly move camera originals, proxy files, previews, renders and scratch data. If the source and destination are both fast enough, a Gen5 SSD can shorten sustained transfers by providing more bandwidth. The benefit is greatest when the project is large enough to run beyond a short burst and when the application is actively streaming data rather than waiting on effects processing.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Disk-to-disk copies and scratch storage
Frequent transfers between fast NVMe drives are another clear case. A Gen5 destination can help when the source drive, CPU, operating-system driver and file system can supply data continuously. If the source is a slower SSD, hard drive, network share or encrypted link, the source may cap the copy before the Gen5 drive’s capability matters.
Dataset staging and intensive professional I/O
Large datasets, compilation trees, virtual-machine images and other workloads that repeatedly issue heavy reads and writes can benefit from Gen5 bandwidth. The useful comparison is not the interface label alone; it is sustained performance and consistency at the queue depths your software actually produces.
DirectStorage-enabled workloads
Crucial describes its T700 Gen5 SSD as nearly twice as fast as its Gen4 performance SSD in internal testing. Its DirectStorage discussion is tied to a supported graphics processing unit, so that result should be read as a vendor-specific, platform-dependent claim rather than a universal gaming multiplier. The GPU, game engine and storage path all have to support the feature for a comparable result.
Where PCIe 4.0 is usually enough
Windows startup and everyday applications
Booting Windows and opening ordinary applications involve many small requests interleaved with CPU initialization and system services. A good Gen4 SSD already completes these operations quickly. A faster sequential specification may not change the end-to-end time by a noticeable amount, and no neutral, identical Gen4-versus-Gen5 consumer test in the available material establishes a universal percentage gain.
Most game loading
Game loads can include decompression, shader work, asset preparation and engine initialization in addition to reading the drive. A Gen5 SSD may help a title that streams enough data to saturate storage, particularly with a supported DirectStorage path, but the cited vendor documents do not prove that every game loads twice as fast. Choose Gen5 for gaming when its other requirements and price are acceptable, not on an assumption of a fixed load-time reduction.

Office, browsing and general home use
Documents, email, browser tabs and light multitasking rarely sustain the transfers required to expose the biggest Gen5 advantage. Capacity, reliability, firmware support and a sensible price per usable terabyte are normally more important than peak bandwidth.
Peak specifications: useful anchors, not a universal ranking
The following figures belong to named products and test conditions. They are not interchangeable guarantees for every Gen5 or Gen4 SSD.
| Drive and generation | Published sequential read | Published sequential write | Published random figure | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Crucial T700, PCIe 5.0 | Up to 12,400 MB/s | Up to 11,800 MB/s | Up to 1,500K random IOPS | Crucial’s peak figures; the company calls it nearly twice as fast as its Gen4 performance SSD in internal testing. |
| Samsung 990 PRO, PCIe 4.0 | Not stated in the supplied material | Not stated in the supplied material | Not stated in the supplied material | Samsung positions it for gaming, 4K/8K content and heavy workloads; its measurements are based on IOmeter. |
| Samsung Semiconductor PM1743, PCIe 5.0 enterprise | Up to 14,000 MB/s | Not stated in the supplied material | Up to 2,500K random-read IOPS | Figures from Samsung Semiconductor’s 2024 white paper for an enterprise drive; do not transfer them directly to a consumer M.2 buying decision. |
“Up to” values are peak or vendor-reported measurements. Drive capacity, firmware, test software, queue depth, transfer size, test duration, cooling and the source or destination device can all change the observed result. A short benchmark run may also benefit from a write cache that cannot be sustained indefinitely.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteHow to read an SSD benchmark without being misled
Check the test tool and workload
Compare results only when the same benchmark, transfer size, queue depth, thread count and test duration are used. Samsung identifies IOmeter for its 990 PRO measurements; a number produced by a different tool is not automatically equivalent.
Separate burst speed from sustained consistency
Ask whether the test is long enough to fill the drive’s write cache. A drive can post a very high initial write rate and then settle at a lower sustained rate. For large project copies, the post-cache result and temperature over the whole transfer are more useful than the first few seconds.
Confirm the source and destination
A Gen5 SSD cannot make a copy faster than the slower side of the transfer. Test configurations should identify whether data came from another NVMe drive, a SATA SSD, a hard disk, a network share or memory. The same limitation applies to application benchmarks that depend on several storage devices.

Use queue depth that resembles your work
High queue-depth random IOPS can matter to a server or a heavily parallel workstation while saying little about a lightly loaded desktop. For a personal system, include low-queue-depth latency and application traces alongside headline IOPS.

Platform compatibility: verify the slot before buying
Motherboard slot generation
A Gen5 SSD needs a motherboard M.2 slot that provides PCIe 5.0 x4 connectivity. A slot that is physically M.2 but electrically Gen4 will not deliver Gen5 link speed; the drive will operate at the negotiated capability of the slot. Consult the motherboard manual for the exact slot, lane source and supported CPU generation.
Lane sharing and expansion cards
On some platforms, using a particular M.2 slot can share lanes with a graphics slot or disable another connector. Check the board’s lane-sharing diagram before installation, especially in a workstation with multiple NVMe drives, capture cards or expansion cards.
Firmware and operating-system support
Install current motherboard firmware and SSD firmware when the vendor provides stability or compatibility fixes. A drive can appear in firmware setup yet still perform poorly if the platform uses an unexpected link mode, outdated storage driver or an unsuitable power-management setting.
Backward compatibility
PCIe devices generally negotiate a common generation, so a Gen5 drive can run at a lower generation when installed in a compatible older slot. That can be useful for a future upgrade, but you pay for capability you cannot use today. Conversely, a Gen4 drive is a sensible choice for a Gen4-only system.
Heat, power and cooling are part of Gen5 performance
Higher transfer rates can increase controller power and heat. Samsung explicitly discusses thermal and power constraints for Gen5-class drives. If temperature reaches the drive’s protection threshold, firmware can throttle performance; a nominally faster SSD may then deliver less sustained throughput than a cooler Gen4 model.

Desktop installation checklist
- Use the motherboard’s supplied M.2 heatsink if it is rated for the drive and installed with its protective film removed.
- Ensure the heatsink makes full contact with the controller and NAND packages as specified by the board or SSD documentation.
- Provide case airflow across the M.2 area rather than relying only on a distant exhaust fan.
- Monitor temperature and transfer rate during a long copy, not only during a short benchmark.
Laptop and compact-system considerations
Thin laptops and small-form-factor systems have less thermal headroom and may restrict the M.2 heatsink. They also have tighter battery and power budgets. For these systems, sustained performance, power draw, firmware behavior and slot availability should outweigh a peak sequential number.
Gen5 versus Gen4 buying framework
| Your situation | Better starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Web, office, schoolwork and ordinary Windows use | Quality PCIe 4.0 | Capacity, reliability and price usually matter more than peak link bandwidth. |
| Gaming with no confirmed storage bottleneck | Quality PCIe 4.0 | No universal Gen5 load-time gain is established; game-engine and CPU work can dominate. |
| Frequent large video-project transfers | PCIe 5.0 if the platform is ready | Sustained sequential bandwidth is the clearest area where Gen5 can help. |
| Dataset staging, virtual machines or heavy parallel I/O | PCIe 5.0 after workload testing | Higher bandwidth and random-I/O capability may reduce waits when the workload can keep the queue busy. |
| Laptop or compact PC with limited cooling | PCIe 4.0 unless the manufacturer supports Gen5 thermally | Heat, power and throttling can erase the theoretical advantage. |
| Gen4-only motherboard | PCIe 4.0 | A Gen5 drive cannot use its higher link mode in that slot. |
How to choose a specific drive
1. Identify the real workload
Measure what you actually do: long media copies, VM image operations, dataset staging, game installs or mostly small everyday files. Note whether the source and destination are fast enough to feed the new SSD.
2. Confirm the platform path
Read the motherboard or laptop manual and identify the M.2 slot’s generation, lane width, CPU or chipset connection, lane-sharing rules and supported drive lengths. Do not infer Gen5 support from the presence of an M.2 socket alone.

Look for long-duration write tests, temperatures, post-cache performance and low-queue-depth results in addition to peak sequential read and write. Keep the test tool and conditions visible when comparing products.
4. Price capacity, not just the interface
Compare the cost per usable terabyte at the capacity you need. A larger Gen4 SSD can be more useful than a smaller Gen5 model if your projects, games or virtual machines routinely approach the drive’s free-space limit.
5. Check support terms
Verify warranty length, endurance rating, firmware-update method, monitoring software and operating-system compatibility. These details affect ownership after the benchmark is finished.
Installation and verification steps
- Back up important data before replacing or adding a drive.
- Update motherboard firmware if the board manufacturer lists storage or PCIe compatibility fixes.
- Install the SSD in the documented PCIe 5.0 x4 M.2 slot, or in the intended Gen4 slot for a Gen4 drive.
- Fit the heatsink correctly, removing any insulating film from the thermal pad and keeping the drive level.
- Enter firmware setup and confirm that the drive is detected and the link is negotiating at the expected generation and lane width.
- In the operating system, initialize and format the new volume only after confirming the correct disk identity; a mistaken selection can destroy existing data.
- Install the vendor’s current firmware and monitoring utility when supported.
- Run a benchmark with a known test size, then perform a representative long copy while monitoring temperature and transfer-rate consistency.
Troubleshooting common problems
The Gen5 drive reports Gen4 speed
- Confirm that the SSD is in the motherboard’s Gen5-capable M.2 slot, not a secondary Gen4 slot.
- Check the manual for CPU-generation requirements and lane-sharing restrictions.
- Update motherboard firmware and verify the negotiated link width.
- Inspect the slot and connector for installation problems, then retest with other expansion devices temporarily removed if the manual indicates shared lanes.
Performance falls during a long write
- Check temperature and whether the drop begins after a repeatable amount of data, which can indicate cache exhaustion or thermal throttling.
- Improve heatsink contact and airflow, then repeat the same test duration.
- Leave free space on the drive and compare sustained results rather than the initial burst.
Copying is no faster after a Gen5 upgrade
- Identify the slower source, destination or network path.
- Check whether the operation is dominated by CPU compression, encryption, file-count overhead or application processing.
- Use a long sequential test to verify that the SSD itself can reach its expected range before judging the application.
Bottom line for desktops, workstations and laptops
PCIe 5.0 is a targeted performance upgrade, not a universal responsiveness switch. Its strongest case is repeated large-file movement and intensive, parallel I/O on a platform with a genuine PCIe 5.0 x4 M.2 path and sufficient cooling. For ordinary desktop work and many games, a well-chosen PCIe 4.0 SSD delivers the practical speed most users need, often leaving more budget for capacity. State the motherboard slot and cooling method in any purchase decision, and treat vendor peak figures as model-specific measurements rather than promises about every application.
