Worldwide PC shipments fell an estimated 20.1% year over year to 62.7 million in Q3 2026, according to IDC figures reported by Notebookcheck. The same report puts the sequential decline at 9.1%. Those numbers describe estimated shipments—not retail sales or the number of PCs consumers bought—and the original IDC quarter release could not be confirmed in the available reporting.
What the Q3 2026 shipment figures say
Notebookcheck’s account of IDC estimates puts worldwide PC shipments at 62.7 million in Q3 2026, a 20.1% drop from the same quarter a year earlier. It also reports a 9.1% decline from the preceding quarter. The year-over-year and sequential figures use different comparison periods; neither should be read as a retail-sales measure.

These are estimates of devices shipped into the market, not a direct count of purchases by consumers or businesses. Because the original IDC Q3 tracker and its definitions were not available to verify, the quarter figures should be attributed to IDC as reported by Notebookcheck rather than presented as independently confirmed IDC data. IDC’s broader 2026 outlook describes a market under pressure from supply constraints, macroeconomic conditions, platform changes, earlier purchasing activity and rising average selling prices. Together, those factors offer context for a difficult PC market, but they do not establish how much each one contributed to the Q3 decline.

The pull-in hangover
Pull-forward activity occurs when buyers bring planned purchases forward—for example, to get ahead of an expected change in prices, availability or technology. That can lift shipments in an earlier period and leave fewer purchases for later periods. IDC identifies earlier pull-forward activity as part of the market backdrop, but the available figures do not quantify its effect on Q3 2026.
Supply constraints and higher prices
IDC also points to structural supply constraints and rising average selling prices. Limited availability can restrict how many systems vendors can ship, while higher prices can make buyers delay or reduce purchases. These are plausible pressures identified in IDC’s outlook, not a verified causal breakdown of the quarter’s 20.1% decline. IDC’s PC market outlook

How the full-year outlooks compare
The firms’ full-year numbers are forecasts, not measurements of Q3 results. IDC’s outlook forecasts an 11.3% decline in worldwide PC shipments for 2026 and says the downturn could deepen in Q4. Gartner’s February 2026 forecast projected a 10.4% decline in worldwide PC shipments that year and anticipated that higher costs would lead to longer PC lifetimes.
| Firm and timing | Measure and period | Forecast |
|---|---|---|
| IDC, 2026 outlook | Worldwide PC shipments, full year 2026 | 11.3% decline |
| Gartner, February 2026 | Worldwide PC shipments, full year 2026 | 10.4% decline |
The forecasts differ, but the available reporting does not provide enough directly comparable methodological detail to explain the gap. They should not be merged into a single estimate or treated as confirmation of the Q3 shipment figure. IDC outlook; Gartner forecast, February 2026

What the reported vendor figures show—and what they do not
Notebookcheck reports that Lenovo led the worldwide market in Q3 with an estimated 14.9 million shipments and 23.8% share, despite a 22.6% year-over-year shipment decline. These figures, too, are secondary reporting of IDC estimates. Without the original IDC vendor table and its definitions, they should be treated as a reported snapshot, not a fully verified vendor comparison.

What to take away
- The reported 20.1% fall is year over year; the separate sequential decline is 9.1%.
- The 62.7 million figure is an estimated shipment total, not a count of retail purchases.
- IDC’s discussion of supply constraints, higher prices and earlier buying helps frame market pressures, but does not assign a definitive cause to the Q3 drop.
- IDC and Gartner forecast different full-year declines; those are separate forecasts, not actual results or directly reconciled estimates.
