GOG is the clear answer. Its voluntary refund policy allows a request up to 30 days after purchase, even when the game has been downloaded, launched and played. Steam’s standard rule is 14 days from purchase with less than two hours played. The Epic Games Store and Ubisoft Store use essentially the same 14-day/two-hour limits, while EA’s direct-store policy changes according to whether you launched the game and whether a qualifying technical failure occurred.
These are storefront policies, not a replacement for statutory consumer rights. Region, product type, preorder status and the current wording shown at checkout can change eligibility, so verify the live terms before relying on a refund window.

Refund policies at a glance
| Store | Standard time limit | Playtime or launch condition | Does it beat Steam’s standard rule? | Important eligibility detail |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Steam | 14 days from purchase | Less than 2 hours played | Baseline | Valve may review requests outside the window, but approval is not guaranteed. |
| GOG | Up to 30 days after purchase | Download, launch and play are permitted before requesting a refund | Yes | GOG can refuse abusive or unreasonable requests. |
| Epic Games Store | 14 days from purchase | Less than 2 hours of runtime | No | The PC or Mac product must be marked refundable or self-refundable. |
| Ubisoft Store | 14 days from purchase | Less than 2 hours played | No | The stated rule applies to eligible digital PC games. |
| EA app and EA.com | 14 days if not launched; 24 hours after first launch | Launch status determines the ordinary window | No general advantage | A special 72-hour technical-failure rule can apply to qualifying new releases within 30 days of release. |
The figures above are the standard limits published by the named storefronts. They are not a promise that every product, region or payment method qualifies.

Why GOG is the standout alternative
A genuine 30-day decision period
GOG’s updated policy is unusual because it gives you up to 30 days after purchase to request a refund without imposing the familiar two-hour play ceiling. The policy explicitly says the game may have been downloaded, launched and played. That makes it materially more useful for testing a demanding single-player release, checking compatibility with your hardware, or discovering whether a game’s controls and accessibility options work for you.

What the policy does not mean
The longer window is voluntary and is not an unlimited trial. GOG reserves the right to reject abusive or unreasonable patterns of requests. Repeatedly buying, finishing or heavily using games and then seeking refunds could be treated differently from an occasional good-faith test. Keep your request tied to a specific purchase and explain the problem accurately.
A 30-day policy also does not override a product’s own eligibility terms, regional rules or legal rights. If a title is a preorder, an early-access product, a bundle or another nonstandard purchase, read the terms attached to that transaction rather than assuming the ordinary rule applies.
Steam remains a two-part test
Steam’s standard guarantee has two gates: the request must be made within 14 days of purchase and the title must show less than two hours of play. Exceeding either limit removes the automatic guarantee. Valve says support may still review an out-of-window request, but that discretionary review is not a dependable extension of the policy.
The play counter is important because it measures the time recorded by Steam, not merely time spent in a menu. Leaving a game running while troubleshooting can use up the allowance. If you are evaluating performance, stop the application between tests and submit a request before crossing the stated threshold.

Epic and Ubisoft do not provide a longer standard window
Epic Games Store
Epic’s stated rule for eligible PC and Mac products is a refund within 14 days of purchase with less than two hours of runtime. Eligibility is product-specific: the store identifies products as refundable or self-refundable. A game without one of those labels should not be treated as covered by the ordinary rule.
That label requirement changes how you should shop. Check the product page before paying, especially for bundles, virtual items or products that are not conventional standalone games. The headline numbers match Steam’s, so Epic is not the answer for someone specifically seeking more than two weeks or more than two hours to decide.
Ubisoft Store
Ubisoft’s stated digital-PC policy also uses a 14-day period and less than two hours played. It therefore does not improve on Steam’s standard limits. Product eligibility and any special category terms still matter, so confirm that the particular digital game is covered before purchase.
EA uses launch status instead of a broad play allowance
EA’s direct-store terms are more conditional than a simple day-and-hours formula. If you have not launched the game, the ordinary window is 14 days after purchase. After the first launch, the window is 24 hours. That means launching a title can change your deadline immediately, even if you played only briefly.

EA also describes a special 72-hour route for qualifying new releases that suffer technical failures, provided the request falls within 30 days of the release date. This is an exception for qualifying launch problems, not a general three-day refund period for every EA purchase. Whether a particular failure qualifies depends on the product and the circumstances covered by the policy.
Because EA’s ordinary rule turns on launch status, it is not a practical substitute for GOG’s play-and-decide period. If you are buying an EA game directly, check the launch condition before starting the application and keep evidence of a reproducible technical problem if that is the reason for your request.
How to compare a refund policy before buying
Separate the calendar window from the usage limit
A store can offer a generous number of days but still impose a short play limit, or it can allow play after download and launch while reserving the right to reject unreasonable use. Compare both dimensions. “14 days” alone does not tell you whether a two-hour cap, a launch trigger or a product label applies.
Check product eligibility
Epic’s refundable or self-refundable label is an explicit example of product-level eligibility. Other stores can apply different terms to bundles, subscriptions, downloadable content, virtual currency, preorders and early-access products. The policies summarized here do not establish one universal preorder or early-access treatment across stores; read the terms attached to the exact transaction.

- An Epic Games account is required to redeem an Epic Games Store Card code
- If playing on a console platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch or Mobile) you need to link your Epic Games account to that gaming platform (one time) to redeem your gift card code
- The 16 digit code on the back of the card WILL NOT work if redeemed directly through your gaming platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch, Mobile, etc.)
- Note: Nintendo devices do not support Fortnite Shared Wallet, so V-Bucks purchased using your account balance will not show up on your Nintendo device. However, if you purchase items in the web Item Shop — or another platform where you play Fortnite — those items will be available in your Locker across all platforms.
- Redemption: Online
Look for technical-failure provisions
Technical exceptions are not the same as a general satisfaction guarantee. EA’s special rule is tied to qualifying new releases and technical failures. A game that simply does not suit your taste is a different case from one that cannot launch or has a covered defect.
Confirm where the money goes
The policy material summarized here does not specify a single refund destination for every storefront. Some transactions can involve the original payment method or store credit depending on region and payment type. Check the refund screen and the current store terms so you know what will be returned and how long processing may take.

You want to test a game thoroughly
Choose GOG when the title is available there and your priority is time to evaluate it after downloading, launching and playing. Its 30-day policy is the only clearly longer standard window in this comparison, subject to the abuse restriction and any product-specific terms.
You are comfortable deciding quickly
Steam, Epic and Ubisoft are broadly similar choices if you can test a game within 14 days and under two hours. On Epic, confirm the refundable or self-refundable designation first. On Steam and Ubisoft, monitor recorded playtime while troubleshooting.

You are worried about launch-day failures
Review EA’s launch-dependent terms before starting an EA purchase. For other stores, do not assume that a serious bug automatically creates a longer deadline; the standard window and any separate technical-failure language control.
Practical checklist before requesting a refund
- Identify the storefront that processed the payment; a key bought from a third-party seller follows that seller’s terms rather than the platform’s ordinary policy.
- Record the purchase date, product name, edition and order number.
- Check the elapsed days and the store’s recorded playtime or launch status before submitting the request.
- Confirm that the product is marked eligible where the store requires an eligibility label.
- Describe the reason truthfully, distinguishing a technical failure from a change of preference.
- Review whether the refund will use the original payment route or another method shown by the store.
- Submit through the storefront’s official support or order-history flow and save the confirmation.
If the request falls outside the automatic rule, you can still ask support to review it where the store permits discretionary review, but treat approval as uncertain. Keep any relevant error messages, crash details or troubleshooting steps concise and factual.
What to remember
For a PC storefront with a refund policy longer than Steam’s, GOG is the clear choice: its standard voluntary policy reaches 30 days and allows a refund request after download, launch and play. Epic and Ubisoft stay at Steam-like limits, and EA’s rules are governed by launch timing with a narrow technical-failure exception. Always verify the live terms for your region and exact product before purchase, because the headline window is only one part of eligibility.
