PayPal says opening one is free and there is no monthly maintenance fee, but accepting payments can incur transaction fees. A sole proprietor can apply without forming an LLC, using their own name and Social Security number, according to PayPal’s US signup guidance.
What is a PayPal Business account?
It is an account intended for people or organizations that receive payments for goods or services. PayPal distinguishes business use from personal account use and identifies PayPal Checkout as one of its business products. The account can also support a business-facing setup, including features PayPal describes for merchants operating under a company or group name.

PayPal says a Business account can provide a customer-service email alias and limited employee access. Those features may be useful when more than one person handles payments or customer inquiries; they do not mean every business tool is automatically enabled or available to every account. What can you do with a PayPal Business account?
Accept payments online
PayPal Checkout provides an online payment flow for PayPal payments and major cards. Other payment methods depend on the product and eligibility. PayPal also describes Expanded Checkout as a more merchant-managed flow, with pricing that differs from PayPal Checkout. The applicable setup and fees depend on the product you choose; there is no single processing rate that describes every Business account. See PayPal Checkout solutions.
Send invoices
PayPal lets businesses send invoices that customers can pay using a preferred payment method, including when the customer does not have a PayPal account, according to PayPal’s signup page. Invoice payments have their own fee category, so check the fee schedule for the payment type that applies.

Yes. PayPal’s US signup guidance says a sole proprietor does not need an LLC or another formal business entity to sign up. PayPal says there is no fee to open a US Business account and no monthly maintenance fee. That is separate from the cost of processing payments. PayPal’s US merchant fee schedule, last updated October 1, 2026, lists these standard rates for the named transaction categories:
Best Value
- COMPATIBILITY: Custom-designed protective case specifically made to fit PayPal card reader devices securely
- PROTECTION: Durable bumper design shields against drops, scratches, and daily wear while maintaining full device functionality
- ACCESS: Precisely cut openings ensure unrestricted access to all ports, buttons, and card slot without removing the case
- GRIP ENHANCEMENT: Textured exterior surface provides improved handling and prevents slipping during transactions
- PORTABLE DESIGN: Lightweight and slim profile allows for easy storage in pockets or bags while maintaining complete protection
| US transaction category | Listed fee |
|---|---|
| PayPal Checkout and PayPal Guest Checkout, standard domestic commercial transactions | 3.49% plus a $0.49 fixed fee |
| Standard credit and debit card payments | 2.99% plus a $0.49 fixed fee |
| Pay Later options | 4.99% plus a $0.49 fixed fee |
| International commercial transactions | An additional 1.50% percentage-based fee on top of the applicable domestic fee, subject to PayPal’s definitions and terms |
These are US schedule figures for the listed categories, not universal prices for every payment or country. Other payment types, services, and circumstances can have different fees. Check PayPal’s current US merchant and business fee schedule and the terms for the specific product before estimating your costs.
When does a Business account make sense?
Consider it if you receive money for goods or services and want a business-oriented account setup or access to PayPal’s merchant payment products. It may be unnecessary to choose Business solely to accept a one-off personal payment: PayPal distinguishes commercial from personal use, and the appropriate account depends on what the payments are for. Compare the products and fees you expect to use, rather than treating the no-monthly-fee statement as evidence that processing is free.
