The right choice depends on your weather exposure, willingness to clean or refinish, whether furniture must be moved or stored, the look and feel you want, and your budget. Compare the complete product—not just the label on the visible surface. A chair may combine a metal frame, a woven covering, separate hardware, and cushions made from entirely different materials.
Use the comparison below to match construction to your conditions, then verify the exact model’s finish, hardware, cushion fabric, cleaning instructions, and replacement-parts policy. “Low maintenance” means routine care is simpler; it does not mean maintenance-free.

What “material” means on a patio-furniture listing
Material names often describe only one layer of a piece. A “wicker” sofa, for example, has a woven exterior but still needs a frame, fasteners, feet, and cushions. A wood table may have a protective finish that changes how it should be cleaned. A plastic chair might be molded resin, while a heavier-looking outdoor table could be made from high-density polyethylene (HDPE) lumber. These products do not share the same performance or care requirements.
Before comparing labels, identify four parts:
- Frame: the load-bearing structure, often wood, aluminum, steel, or a plastic lumber product.
- Visible surface: boards, powder-coated metal, molded resin, or woven strands.
- Hardware and joints: screws, bolts, hinges, welds, and connection points where water and wear can cause problems.
- Soft goods: cushions, slings, and upholstery that may need separate washing, drying, storage, or replacement.
Outdoor Furniture Authority’s materials guide and BBQGuys’ comparison chart both stress evaluating construction and conditions rather than treating a material name as a guarantee: Outdoor Furniture Authority materials guide and BBQGuys materials comparison chart.

Wood, metal, wicker, and plastic compared
| Material | Useful strengths | Tradeoffs and checks | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wood | Natural warmth, substantial feel, and varied grain and color by species. Teak is commonly used as an outdoor hardwood. | Species, finish, sun, moisture, and exposure determine care. Color changes are normal, and outdoor wood is subject to weathering and decay. | People who value a natural material and accept cleaning, covering, or finish decisions. |
| Metal | Aluminum is comparatively light and corrosion resistant. Steel supplies more weight and rigidity. Finishes support many styles. | Coatings can be scratched or chipped. Inspect welds, joints, edges, drainage, and hardware. Lightweight pieces can move in wind. | Aluminum for frequent repositioning; steel when a heavier feel matters and finish care is acceptable. |
| Wicker | Woven texture and curved forms suit relaxed seating. Synthetic all-weather weave can simplify routine cleaning. | Wicker is a construction, not a single substance. Determine whether strands are natural or synthetic and what frame supports them. Check UV exposure, weave tension, trapped debris, and cushions. | People who want a woven appearance and will verify the entire assembly. |
| Plastic, resin, or HDPE | Molded resin can be light and stackable. HDPE or “poly lumber” can make substantial furniture that does not require routine refinishing. | Do not treat molded resin, HDPE lumber, and synthetic wicker as interchangeable. Verify formulation, UV and color claims, heat exposure, hardware, and care instructions. | People prioritizing straightforward cleaning, provided the maker’s product details support the claim. |
This is a trade-off map, not a durability ranking. No comparable, named statistic establishes one universal service life for all wood, metal, wicker, and plastic furniture. Longevity varies with construction, local exposure, and care; the sources do not support a single lifespan, warranty duration, or price range for every product. Homes & Gardens’ buying guide likewise frames the question of what lasts longest around care and environment rather than one guaranteed winner.
Wood: warm, heavy, and dependent on species and finish
How species changes the decision
Wood gives a patio a natural appearance and a solid feel, but “wood outdoor furniture” is not one performance category. Species differ in grain, color, density, and resistance to outdoor exposure. Teak is commonly positioned as an outdoor hardwood. If left untreated, teak can weather toward a silvery gray; preserving a more original color requires following the manufacturer’s finish and cleaning directions. Other outdoor woods may need different sealing or storage practices.
Weathering is not the same as failure
Sun and moisture can alter color and surface texture even when a piece remains structurally usable. The USDA Forest Products Laboratory states: “The best way to protect wood furniture or artwork (e.g., wood carvings) from weathering is to cover it with a roof.” Read the technical publication for the context of that recommendation: USDA Forest Products Laboratory technical publication. A roof, covered porch, or suitable storage reduces exposure, but it does not replace inspections for loose joints, cracks, standing water, or finish breakdown.

When wood makes sense
- Choose it when grain, warmth, and a substantial feel matter more than the lightest possible weight.
- Plan where the furniture will go during prolonged wet periods, intense sun, or seasonal inactivity.
- Ask whether the seller specifies a species, finish, and cleaning method; vague “wood” descriptions leave important care questions unanswered.
Metal: distinguish aluminum from steel
Aluminum for lower weight and corrosion resistance
Aluminum is comparatively light and naturally more corrosion resistant than unprotected steel, making it practical when you regularly rearrange chairs or need to carry furniture into storage. Its low weight can also be a drawback in exposed, windy locations. Examine the frame’s wall thickness, weld quality, feet, and any mechanism that joins dissimilar metals; these details affect stability and wear more than the word “aluminum” alone.
Steel for weight and rigidity
Steel generally gives a heavier, more planted feel and can provide rigid frames. Its outdoor performance depends heavily on an intact protective finish. Scratches, chips, and worn edges expose vulnerable areas, so inspect those points and repair them according to the maker’s instructions. The exact alloy, coating system, drainage design, and workmanship are not interchangeable between products. The differences between aluminum and steel are summarized in the Outdoor Furniture Authority guide and BBQGuys chart.
Metal inspection checklist
- Look underneath for unsealed tube ends where water could collect.
- Check welds and bolted joints for gaps, sharp edges, or movement.
- Confirm what the finish is and whether touch-up instructions or replacement hardware are available.
- Consider wind exposure before selecting a very light chair or table.
Wicker: a weave, not a material
Natural versus synthetic strands
Wicker describes a woven construction. Natural wicker may use plant-based fibers and generally needs more protection from prolonged moisture. Synthetic resin or polymer strands are designed for outdoor use, but their performance still depends on UV exposure, strand quality, weave tension, and the frame beneath them. Ask specifically what the strands are made from rather than assuming every “all-weather wicker” product is equivalent.

Evaluate the frame and weave together
A tightly woven seat can still fail early if its frame flexes, fasteners loosen, or water remains trapped at joints. Press gently on seating areas, inspect the underside, and look for clean transitions around arms and corners. Check whether cushions lift out for drying and whether replacement cushions are sold. The guide at Outdoor Furniture Authority recommends evaluating the weave, frame, hardware, and soft goods as separate components.
Recommended Free Tools
Cleaning a synthetic weave
Care instructions are product-specific. For its own synthetic weave, POLYWOOD recommends removing cushions, brushing or vacuuming away loose debris, washing with mild dish soap and water using a soft brush, rinsing, and allowing the weave to dry. Its instructions say not to pressure-wash that weave: POLYWOOD weave-care instructions. Do not generalize those directions to every woven product; follow the label for your model.
Plastic, molded resin, and HDPE lumber
Molded resin is not the same as plastic lumber
Molded resin furniture is often light, stackable, and easy to wipe down. Examine its underside for reinforcing ribs, drain paths, and stress points, and consider how heat and direct sun affect the particular product. A thin molded chair and a thick, reinforced outdoor table can both be marketed as “plastic” while feeling and aging very differently.

What HDPE claims can—and cannot—tell you
HDPE or “poly lumber” is a separate category made from high-density polyethylene. POLYWOOD describes its own lumber frames as 100% HDPE with UV protectant and color integrated into the lumber, and says routine cleaning uses soap, water, and a soft-bristle brush. Those are manufacturer claims about POLYWOOD products, not a specification for every HDPE listing: POLYWOOD product information.
Questions to ask before buying
- Is the piece molded resin, HDPE lumber, or a synthetic weave over another frame?
- Are UV resistance and color claims stated for this model and finish?
- What hardware is supplied, and can it be replaced?
- Does the maker specify limits for hot surfaces, fire, or prolonged heat?
- Can you obtain replacement slats, parts, or cushions?
Match the material to your conditions
| Your priority or condition | What to investigate first | Reasonable direction |
|---|---|---|
| Frequent rearranging or seasonal storage | Overall weight, handles, stackability, and locking or folding hardware | Aluminum or molded resin may be easier to move; verify wind stability. |
| Wind-exposed patio | Frame mass, base geometry, and anchoring options | Heavier steel or a substantial wood/HDPE frame may feel more secure than a very light piece. |
| Strong sun | Finish and UV statements for the exact surface, plus cushion-fabric ratings | Compare the maker’s documented UV measures; do not infer them from a generic material name. |
| Frequent rain or humidity | Drainage, finish integrity, corrosion protection, and drying time for cushions | Favor designs that shed water and provide care instructions for your exposure. |
| Natural appearance | Specified wood species, finish, and expected color change | Wood, especially teak, offers the look; decide whether weathered gray is acceptable. |
| Simple routine cleaning | Washable surfaces, removable cushions, and accessible joints | Synthetic weave, molded resin, or a documented HDPE product may reduce refinishing work. |
A step-by-step buying and inspection process
- Describe the site. Note direct sun, rain, salt exposure, wind, roof coverage, and whether furniture can be stored.
- Separate the components. Record the frame material, surface or weave, hardware, finish, and cushion fabric instead of accepting one headline label.
- Read the care sheet before paying. Look for cleaning agents to use or avoid, drying requirements, finish touch-ups, and storage advice.
- Inspect joints and undersides. Check welds, fasteners, drainage, tube ends, weave tension, and places where debris can collect.
- Test movement and stability. Sit in the chair, check for flex or rocking, and consider whether wind could move it.
- Confirm parts support. Ask about replacement cushions, slats, hardware, glides, and covers; a replaceable component can extend practical usefulness.
- Plan protection. Decide whether a roof, cover, shade, or seasonal storage is realistic for your routine.
Maintenance routines that prevent avoidable damage
For wood
Remove leaves and standing water, clean with the specified product, inspect joints, and decide whether to let the species weather or maintain a finish. Covering under a roof offers the strongest basic protection against weathering according to the USDA source linked above.

For metal
Rinse away dirt and salts, dry joints, and address chips or scratches using the manufacturer’s approved method. Do not assume a coating makes the frame immune to corrosion after the finish is breached.

For wicker
Brush or vacuum debris from the weave, clean gently, and dry thoroughly. Avoid high-pressure cleaning unless the product maker explicitly permits it; the POLYWOOD instruction cited earlier specifically prohibits pressure washing its weave.
For plastic and HDPE
Use the maker’s recommended soap, water, and brush method, and inspect for warping, stress cracks, loose hardware, or heat-related damage. A manufacturer’s claim about UV protection or integrated color applies to that maker’s formulation, not automatically to all plastic furniture.
For cushions and hardware
Clean cushions according to their fabric labels, allow them to dry completely, and store them when prolonged wet weather is expected. Tighten or replace hardware only as directed; cushions and fasteners can determine comfort and serviceability even when the main frame remains sound.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCommon mistakes to avoid
- Choosing by a single word: “wicker,” “metal,” or “plastic” does not identify every component.
- Assuming low maintenance means no maintenance: debris, moisture, finishes, cushions, and hardware still need attention.
- Using universal care advice: a cleaner or pressure washer approved for one product can damage another.
- Ignoring exposure: the same chair can age differently under a roof, in full sun, or beside salt air.
- Buying without parts information: unavailable cushions, glides, or hardware can make a repairable problem a replacement decision.
- Expecting a guaranteed lifespan: no comparable statistic supports one universal service-life number across these categories.
Bottom line: choose the construction that fits your routine
Choose wood when natural character and a substantial feel justify species-specific care and protection. Choose aluminum when low weight and corrosion resistance make moving furniture important; consider steel when mass and rigidity matter and you will protect its finish. Choose wicker for the woven look only after confirming whether the strands are natural or synthetic and checking the frame beneath them. Choose molded resin or a documented HDPE product when simple cleaning and low refinishing are priorities, while treating each maker’s formulation and care claims as product-specific.
The most reliable purchase is the one whose frame, surface, hardware, cushions, and care requirements match your actual patio—not the one with the most appealing material label.
