Yes—Alaska landscapes with discontinuous, or patchier, permafrost showed substantially stronger hillslope transport than terrain with mostly continuous permafrost. In a 2026 study of sediment from 12 lakes, average hillslope diffusivity was 2.1 to 3.0 times higher in discontinuous-permafrost terrain. The authors say continued warming could make hillslope erosion double or more, while stressing that the estimate is specific to the study regions rather than a universal Arctic multiplier.
What the Alaska lake study measured
Emrah Özpolat and colleagues reconstructed long-term catchment erosion from sediment cores collected in 12 Alaska lakes. The cores preserve material delivered from surrounding slopes and channels over intervals extending from the middle Holocene to the present, allowing the researchers to compare average sediment transport over thousands of years rather than relying only on short modern monitoring records.

In the study’s definitions, continuous permafrost underlies more than 90% of a landscape. Discontinuous permafrost covers roughly 50% to 90%, leaving more ground affected by thaw, unfrozen zones and seasonal water movement.

Hillslope transport mattered more than channel transport
Diffusive hillslope erosion
The researchers fitted a diffusion–advection Landscape Evolution Model to the lake-sediment records. In this framework, diffusion represents the gradual downslope movement of soil and regolith through processes such as creep, frost disturbance and other distributed hillslope activity. It does not require a visible channel to carry each particle.
Advective fluvial erosion
Advection represents more directional transport by flowing water, especially in stream channels and gullies. The model comparison found the hillslope diffusivity parameter to be statistically significant, whereas fluvial erodibility was not statistically significant in the fitted comparison. That result indicates that the main difference between the two Alaska settings was distributed slope movement, not a clearly demonstrated change in channel erodibility.

How much higher was erosion in discontinuous permafrost?
Average modeled hillslope diffusivity was approximately 2.1 to 3.0 times higher in the discontinuous-permafrost setting than in the continuous-permafrost setting. The lake-sediment erosion estimates also differed strongly in their central values:

| Toolik | Mostly continuous | 1.48 ± 1.16 g m⁻² yr⁻¹ | 1.28 ± 0.92 g m⁻² yr⁻¹ |
These are sediment-based, long-term average rates for the sampled lake catchments. They should not be read as a single erosion rate for every discontinuous or continuous permafrost watershed. Lake accumulation can also reflect local basin geometry and processes near the shoreline, so the rate estimates and the modeled diffusivity answer related but different questions.

Why patchier permafrost can make slopes more mobile
Discontinuous-permafrost terrain can expose soil to several conditions that increase the frequency or depth of sediment movement:
- Thicker active layers: more ground thaws seasonally, increasing the mobile soil volume.
- More freeze–thaw cycling: repeated expansion and contraction can loosen surface material.
- Longer thaw seasons: a longer period allows creep and runoff to act on unfrozen ground.
- Wetter summers: added pore water can reduce soil strength and aid downslope movement.
- Wildfire disturbance: loss of vegetation and altered soils can leave slopes more exposed.
- Tree throw: uprooted trees disturb soil and create fresh pathways for sediment transport.
Other Alaska observations show that discontinuous-permafrost landscapes can also experience creep, solifluction, gullying and shallow failures. On the Seward Peninsula, satellite radar measurements recorded faster late-summer ground displacement during periods of intense rainfall and/or deep thaw. That evidence comes from a separate study, but it illustrates why several transport mechanisms can operate at once.

What warming could change
Arctic warming can push areas that were formerly mostly continuous toward a more discontinuous pattern, with expanding thawed zones and a less coherent frozen substrate. Based on the fitted relationship in the 12-lake analysis, the authors conclude: “These findings suggest that future transition from continuous to discontinuous permafrost conditions, driven by further Arctic warming, could double or more the intensity of hillslope erosion.”
A stronger hillslope sediment supply can affect downstream water clarity and chemistry, aquatic habitat, floodplain deposition and the movement of soil carbon. The effects will depend on whether sediment reaches a channel, remains stored on a slope or is delivered to a lake during an extreme rainfall or thaw event.

Why the estimate is not a universal Arctic forecast
The comparison covers two Alaska regions and relatively small catchments. The authors identify several reasons to avoid applying the 2.1-to-3.0 factor everywhere:
- Uncertainty ranges for the diffusivity estimates overlap.
- Shoreline wave action and thaw slumping may contribute to some lake sediment signals.
- The three-parameter model is sensitive to individual data points.
- Paleo-sediment averages provide a long-term analogue, not a direct prediction for every future watershed.
- Permafrost, vegetation, topography, wildfire history and rainfall vary substantially across the Arctic.
More lake records, slope measurements and modern observations will be needed to determine where a transition to discontinuous permafrost produces the largest increase in erosion and how quickly that response occurs.
