A password-reset email can look legitimate without making the page it opens safe. Don’t enter your password or a one-time code through an unexpected message. Instead, open the service using a bookmark or an address you already know is correct, then check your account and use its official recovery process.
Can you tell whether a password-reset email is real?
Not from the message’s appearance alone. A familiar logo, sender name, or convincing wording does not authenticate the destination. Phishing pages can imitate financial or payroll login pages, and a lookalike address or redirect can obscure where a link leads. The FBI’s Account Takeover Fraud guidance describes fraudulent websites and social engineering as ways criminals obtain account access.

It is also possible for a real notification to appear in a situation involving a deceptive link or a later impersonation attempt. Without the original email, its headers, the full destination and redirect chain, and the provider’s records, no one can determine from the scenario alone who sent a particular message or why it led elsewhere. Treat the message and the page as separate things to verify.

Why might a reset link open a different website?
A link can pass through redirects, and attackers may use lookalike addresses or fraudulent pages to make a destination seem familiar. The FBI warns that an attacker who gets both login credentials and a one-time authentication code may sign in to a genuine financial institution and initiate a password reset. That describes a documented method; it does not prove that any particular unexpected reset email means an account was taken over. Multi-factor authentication (MFA) is valuable, but it cannot make a fraudulent login page safe. As the FBI puts it: “Multi-factor authentication will not protect you if you land on a fraudulent login page.” Never type a password or share an authentication code on a page reached through a suspicious message.

Use the row that best describes your situation. These steps are precautionary guidance, not a diagnosis of whether an account or device has been compromised.

The FTC says that even opening an unexpected email or text link can expose you to scammers, even if you enter no sensitive information. Its advice is to update security software and scan your device after clicking. Read Don’t take the bait on phishing scams (September 4, 2024).
How to verify the account without trusting the email
- Stop using the message. Don’t click again, reply, call numbers in it, or enter a password or one-time code on the page it opened.
- Navigate independently. Open a saved bookmark or type an address you already know is correct. Review account activity and security notifications after signing in.
- Use official support if needed. Find the provider’s recovery or support page from its known website. Don’t rely on a phone number, URL, or search advertisement supplied by the suspicious message.
- Secure the account if a password was exposed. Set a unique, strong password through the genuine service, change reused passwords on other services, sign out other devices or sessions if possible, and turn on MFA if available.
- Review account controls. Check recovery email addresses and phone numbers, recent sign-ins, sent and deleted mail, and forwarding rules. Remove recovery details or forwarding rules you did not add.
A compromised email inbox deserves particular attention: an attacker with inbox access may request password-reset links for other accounts and retrieve them from your email. If you’re locked out or money is involved
Recover an account you can’t access
Use the provider’s official recovery procedure rather than a link or phone number from the message. The FTC’s recovery guide links to official entry points for major email and social platforms. If you still have access on another device, use the service’s own security settings and support options there.
Respond to financial exposure
If you suspect unauthorized access to a bank or other financial account, or notice fraudulent transfers or changes such as direct-deposit redirection, contact the institution promptly through a known number or its official website. The FBI/IC3’s November 25, 2025 alert describes support impersonation and account takeover affecting financial institutions. It reported more than 5,100 account-takeover complaints and losses exceeding $262 million since January 2025; that is the period and scope stated in that alert, not a current-year total.

Report phishing or identity theft
Report phishing to the FTC. If personal information or money was lost, use the relevant official identity-theft or cybercrime reporting route as well. The FBI/IC3 alert provides reporting guidance for account takeover and relevant fraudulent transfers. Use official agency and provider sites rather than contact details in the suspicious message.
What the alert can—and can’t—tell you
An unexpected reset notice is a reason to verify your account, not proof by itself that someone accessed it. Likewise, a page that looks familiar is not proof that it belongs to the provider. The safest test is to reach the service independently and check its account activity and recovery settings there.
