Neither grading option is universally better. Pass/fail is often the better risk-management choice for an eligible elective when protecting your cumulative GPA or exploring a subject matters more than displaying a precise grade. A letter grade is usually safer for required, major, and prerequisite courses, and for students whose graduate-school plans, scholarships, honors, financial aid, or athletic eligibility depend on conventional grades.

Your institution’s catalog and the receiving program’s rules control the decision. Before the election deadline, confirm how a Pass, Fail, or attempted credit affects GPA, degree requirements, satisfactory academic progress, and admissions.

What the two grading options actually do

Letter grades

A letter grade (such as A, B, C, D, or F) records a level of performance and normally converts to grade points. Those points are multiplied by the course’s credit hours and included in the grade-point average under your institution’s formula. A high grade can raise your cumulative GPA; a low grade can lower it.

Letter grading also creates a detailed transcript signal. An admissions reader, scholarship committee, or future instructor can see whether you earned an A, B, or C rather than only knowing that you completed the course.

Pass/fail, pass/no-credit, and satisfactory/unsatisfactory

Pass/fail systems replace the usual letter with a completion threshold. A Pass generally awards credit without adding grade points to the GPA. A Fail may earn no credit and, at some institutions, is included in GPA calculations as a failing grade. Other institutions treat a Fail differently, so never assume that “pass/fail does not affect GPA” applies to both outcomes.

Schools use different labels—P/F, pass/no-credit, satisfactory/unsatisfactory, or S/U—but the practical questions are the same: What mark appears on the transcript? Is the course credit counted toward the degree? Are Pass and Fail included in GPA calculations? Is the option allowed for this course and student?

Pass/fail versus letter grades at a glance

Decision factor Pass/fail Letter grade
GPA A Pass commonly contributes credit but no grade points. A Fail may count in GPA, depending on institutional rules. Every letter grade normally contributes grade points, so it can raise or lower cumulative GPA.
Transcript detail Shows completion, but not whether your work was barely above the threshold or exceptional. Shows a specific performance level and course grade.
Required or prerequisite courses Frequently restricted or prohibited; a Pass may not satisfy a requirement. Usually the default and most widely accepted way to satisfy the requirement.
Exploratory electives Can reduce GPA risk and make it easier to try an unfamiliar field, if permitted. Rewards strong performance with GPA points and a more informative transcript.
Graduate or professional admission May be accepted, questioned, or rejected for a prerequisite; the target program decides. Provides the conventional evidence most programs expect.
Aid, scholarships, honors, and eligibility Rules may count attempted credits, earned credits, or grades differently; a local review is essential. Usually fits standard GPA and progress calculations, although minimum-grade rules still apply.
Reversibility Changing the grading basis may have a deadline and may be irreversible after the add/drop period. Often the default if no election is made.

When pass/fail is usually the stronger choice

An eligible elective is threatening an otherwise stable GPA

If a course is outside your major and is not needed for a prerequisite or professional application, Pass/fail can limit the downside of a middling letter grade. A Pass generally leaves the existing GPA unchanged while preserving credit. This is most useful when your current GPA is already near a cutoff for a scholarship, honors program, or internal progression rule and the course is unlikely to provide a meaningful admissions signal.

Do not treat Pass/fail as a way to erase risk. You still need to meet the Pass threshold, and a Fail may affect GPA or completion requirements. Ask the registrar exactly how both outcomes are recorded.

You are deliberately exploring a field

An approved Pass/fail elective can let you test a subject outside your preparation without making one experiment a permanent GPA liability. That benefit is strongest when you have checked that the course will still count toward your degree’s elective total and that your future plans do not require a graded version of it.

The course has little value as a performance signal

For a general-interest elective unrelated to your intended work, a Pass may communicate all that a reviewer needs: you completed the class. This is a judgment call. If the course is unusually relevant to your application—such as statistics for a data-focused program—a letter grade may be more useful even when Pass/fail is allowed.

When a letter grade is usually safer

The class is required, part of your major, or a prerequisite

Departments often require a letter grade for courses that establish progression. South Carolina’s policy generally limits an individual Pass/fail option to courses outside the major and not required. McGill states that Pass is not normally used for required courses. Colorado prohibits pass/fail for courses fulfilling graduate-degree requirements. These examples are not a universal rule, but they show why a Pass can fail to satisfy a requirement even when the registration system permits the election.

Prerequisite rules can be stricter than degree rules. A department may award elective credit for a Pass while a later course, licensing board, or professional school requires a C or better shown as a letter. Obtain written confirmation from the department that owns the prerequisite.

You need GPA points

If your expected grade is above your current cumulative average, taking the letter grade can raise your GPA. Choosing Pass/fail would give up that upside. The same logic applies when you are trying to reach a stated threshold such as 3.0 for graduate standing or an honors designation.

For a simple illustration, suppose you have completed 60 graded credits with a 3.20 GPA. You expect an A (4.0) in a three-credit class. Under a conventional 4.0 calculation, your new GPA would be approximately (60 × 3.20 + 3 × 4.0) ÷ 63 = 3.24. A Pass would normally leave the 3.20 unchanged. Use your institution’s own repeat, plus/minus, and rounding rules for an exact result.

The transcript needs to demonstrate mastery

A letter grade can be valuable evidence in a competitive application. It shows how well you performed, not simply that you crossed a pass threshold. This matters for advanced coursework, quantitative classes, writing-intensive courses, and any subject central to your intended field.

How Pass and Fail affect GPA

Northwestern documents that pass/no-credit marks are excluded from GPA calculations, while letter grades carry points. McGill likewise excludes Pass from GPA calculations. Those policies illustrate the common treatment of a successful Pass, not a guarantee about every school or about a Fail.

Ask these separate questions before electing:

  • Does a Pass earn degree credit, elective credit, and credit toward full-time enrollment?
  • Does a Fail appear on the transcript and enter the GPA as zero grade points?
  • Are attempted pass/fail credits included in satisfactory academic progress or completion-rate calculations?
  • Does a repeated pass/fail course replace an earlier grade, or do both attempts remain?
  • Are plus/minus letter grades handled differently from a Pass?

Do not calculate the decision from your expected grade alone. Compare the GPA effect of the likely letter grade with the consequences of failing under the pass/fail policy.

Prerequisites, majors, and degree audits

Course eligibility is often the first hard gate. A registration portal may display Pass/fail as an option even though your department later refuses to apply the credit to a major or prerequisite. Check the catalog entry, your degree audit, and the department’s written guidance.

Some programs permit a limited number of Pass/fail electives; others restrict the option to courses outside the major. Graduate programs may impose separate rules. Colorado, for example, prohibits pass/fail for courses fulfilling graduate-degree requirements. The University of Alabama allows no more than 20% of required graduate credit on a pass/fail basis. That 20% ceiling is an institutional graduate-catalog rule, not a national standard.

Approval can also be part of eligibility. South Carolina requires program and dean approval for an individual Pass/fail option. If approval is needed, an informal conversation with an instructor does not substitute for the documented process.

Graduate and professional-school admissions

There is no single admissions rule for Pass notation. A target program may accept a Pass as elective credit, require a letter grade for a prerequisite, or ask applicants to explain substantial Pass/fail usage. A Pass also prevents the program from seeing whether your result was equivalent to an A or a low C.

Read the current prerequisite and transcript instructions for every program on your list. Look for wording such as “graded credit,” “a minimum grade of B,” or “letter grades required.” If the language is unclear, email admissions with the course number, title, credit hours, and your institution’s definition of Pass. Keep the response with your application records.

Use a letter grade when the class is a core preparation course, when the program publishes a minimum letter-grade requirement, or when you want to demonstrate readiness in that field. Pass/fail can be reasonable for an unrelated elective if the program confirms it will not be used to evaluate a prerequisite or competency.

Financial aid, scholarships, honors, and other eligibility rules

Changing grading mode can affect more than GPA. Financial-aid offices may evaluate satisfactory academic progress using attempted credits, completed credits, completion percentage, and maximum time frame. A Pass may count as completed credit while a Fail counts as attempted but not completed; the exact treatment is local.

Federal Student Aid guidance says a nonnumeric scale generally needs a documented numeric equivalent or a comparable performance standard for certain eligibility purposes. The guidance states that Pass/fail or satisfactory/unsatisfactory grading ordinarily does not meet the requirement unless the school can show that a Pass has a numeric equivalent to a traditional 3.25 GPA or higher, or that test and assignment performance yielded such an equivalent. This is a federal eligibility standard, not a promise that every aid calculation will treat your course the same way.

Scholarships, honors programs, athletic eligibility, veteran benefits, and employer-sponsored tuition can impose their own definitions of “graded credit,” minimum GPA, or satisfactory progress. Ask the office that administers the benefit, not only your academic adviser. Get the answer in writing before the deadline.

What official policies show about institutional variation

Institution or authority Documented rule or example What it means for your decision
Northwestern University Pass/no-credit marks are excluded from GPA; the cited policy also requires a 3.0 cumulative graduate GPA. Successful Pass may protect GPA, but graduate standing still depends on the stated cumulative threshold.
McGill University Pass is excluded from GPA and is not normally used for required courses. A Pass can preserve GPA while failing to satisfy a required-course expectation.
University of South Carolina An individual option is generally limited to courses outside the major and not required; program and dean approval may be required. Eligibility and approval must be verified before registration changes.
University of Alabama No more than 20% of required graduate credit may be taken pass/fail; the cited policy requires a 3.0 cumulative graduate GPA. Even where Pass/fail is allowed, a percentage cap and GPA floor can apply.
University of Colorado Pass/fail is prohibited for courses fulfilling graduate-degree requirements. A graduate student cannot assume that an approved registration option will satisfy the degree.
Penn State graduate policy “A grade is given solely on the basis of the instructor’s judgement as to the student’s scholarly attainment.” The instructor’s evaluation and the institution’s grading policy, rather than a student’s preferred outcome, determine the recorded grade.
Federal Student Aid Nonnumeric grading generally requires a documented numeric equivalent or comparable performance standard; the cited guidance references a traditional 3.25 GPA or higher equivalent. Aid eligibility may require documentation beyond the transcript’s Pass notation.
Carnegie Mellon University Administrative policy changes were recorded as recently as October 24, 2025. Older explanations found online may be obsolete; check the current catalog and registrar notice.

A decision process you can complete before the deadline

  1. Identify the course’s role. Mark whether it is a university requirement, major requirement, prerequisite, degree elective, or unrelated elective. If it is required, in the major, or a prerequisite, start with letter grading unless the catalog explicitly permits Pass.
  2. Read the current rule for your program. Check the registrar’s grading page, catalog, department handbook, and degree audit. Record restrictions on course level, major status, credit limits, approvals, and deadlines.
  3. Calculate the GPA stakes. Estimate the likely letter grade and use your institution’s GPA calculator. Compare the benefit of a higher grade with the risk of a lower one. Include any published GPA floor, such as a 3.0 graduate-standing requirement.
  4. Check external requirements. Review each target graduate or professional program’s prerequisite language. Confirm scholarship, honors, aid, athletic, veteran-benefit, and employer rules with the responsible office.
  5. Ask how every outcome is recorded. Get a clear answer about Pass, Fail, attempted credits, earned credits, repeats, and degree-audit application. A statement that “Pass does not affect GPA” is incomplete unless it also explains Fail.
  6. Confirm approvals. Submit program, department, dean, or adviser approvals through the required system. Keep confirmation emails or screenshots.
  7. Submit before the published deadline. Note the exact date and time zone. Some elections close after the add/drop period and cannot be reversed.
  8. Recheck your record. After processing, verify the grading basis in the registration system and degree audit. If it is wrong, contact the registrar immediately while correction windows are open.

Practical scenarios

You are taking an unrelated elective and expect a C

If the course is outside your major, does not satisfy a prerequisite, and your school confirms that a Pass earns elective credit without GPA points, Pass/fail may protect your average. Check the Fail treatment and any scholarship or aid completion rule first.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You are taking a course required for a later class

Choose a letter grade unless the department explicitly confirms that Pass satisfies the prerequisite. A Pass that appears on your transcript is not automatically equivalent to the required C or better.

You have a 2.95 graduate GPA and expect a B+

Because a published 3.0 floor may control graduate standing, the positive GPA effect of a letter grade can be more valuable than the privacy of Pass/fail. Confirm your institution’s calculation and whether the course is eligible for the option.

You expect to earn an F

Do not assume Pass/fail hides the result. At some schools a Fail is included in GPA, and it may also reduce your completion rate. Ask the registrar whether withdrawal, an incomplete, tutoring, or another permitted remedy is available before changing the grading basis.

You are applying to a professional program next year

Map every course to the program’s prerequisite list. Keep letter grades in subjects the program names or evaluates heavily. For unrelated electives, ask admissions whether a Pass is acceptable and retain the written answer.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

  • Relying on a friend’s experience: Policies can differ by college, program, catalog year, and course level. Use the current rule for your own record.
  • Reading only the GPA paragraph: A policy may exclude Pass from GPA but still deny major or prerequisite credit.
  • Assuming all Pass marks are equal: P, S, and other notations can have different thresholds and degree-audit treatment.
  • Ignoring the Fail outcome: Confirm whether Fail contributes zero grade points, remains outside GPA, or affects only completion.
  • Missing approval or deadline requirements: An unapproved election can be invalid even when the online system accepts it.
  • Using an old web page: Carnegie Mellon’s documented administrative changes as recently as October 24, 2025 illustrate how quickly rules can change. Save the current policy version you relied on.
  • Assuming aid uses GPA alone: Completion percentage, attempted credits, and documented grading standards may matter independently.
  • Choosing Pass/fail to conceal a weak core grade: Admissions readers may see the missing detail and ask for an explanation, especially in a prerequisite subject.

The bottom line for most students

Use Pass/fail selectively: an eligible, nonessential elective is the strongest case when protecting GPA or exploring a subject outweighs the value of a detailed grade. Use letter grading for requirements, prerequisites, major courses, subjects central to future applications, and any class in which a strong grade helps you reach a published threshold.

Because institutional rules differ—and can change—make the final choice only after checking your registrar, department, financial-aid or scholarship office, and target programs. There is no reliable national statistic showing that one grading mode produces better outcomes for all college students; the right answer is the one that fits your course, GPA position, obligations, and next step.
