The Paradigm Premier 220B v2 is a large, passive two-way standmount speaker whose appeal is clarity and scale rather than a deliberately warm sound. In ecoustics, reviewer Ian White describes it as open, precise and revealing, while noting that its brighter treble and leaner midrange will not suit everyone. The Canadian listings cited here put it below $1,500, but their prices use different units, so there is no single dependable market price to quote.
What the Premier 220B v2 is
Paradigm’s official catalog describes the Premier 220B v2 as a two-driver, two-way bookshelf speaker with a ported enclosure. It is passive, so it requires an amplifier or receiver; it is not a powered speaker with amplification built in. The review and Audio 5.1 list a 1-inch (25 mm) AL-MAC ceramic dome tweeter and a 6-inch (152 mm) AL-MAG cone mid/bass driver. The review says the tweeter is ferrofluid damped and sits behind Paradigm’s PPA lens and OSW waveguide.

The review also describes binding posts that support bi-wiring and bi-amping. Those options concern how compatible amplifiers and speaker cables are connected; they do not remove the need for an amplifier.

Ian White’s ecoustics review characterizes the 220B v2 as clear, quick, open and precise, with an ability to convey a convincing sense of scale. These are listening impressions, not standardized measurements or a guarantee of how the speaker will sound in every room and system.

Clarity and detail versus warmth
White reports that the Paradigm gives Nick Cave’s “Avalanche” more edge and definition than the Wharfedale Super Denton, while the Wharfedale gives male vocals more tonal weight and fleshiness. His broader comparison also describes the Q Acoustics 5020 and Wharfedale as warmer or more romantic than the Paradigm. The trade-off is not simply “better” or “worse”: listeners who prioritize explicit detail and image specificity may prefer the Paradigm’s presentation, while those seeking a fuller, warmer vocal balance may prefer the alternatives.
White’s own conclusion is that “The tonal balance will not work for everyone.” That is a useful qualification for a speaker whose strengths are closely tied to a comparatively direct, revealing character.
Size, placement and amplification
This is a substantial standmount, not a compact speaker that disappears onto a shallow shelf. The ecoustics review gives dimensions of 14.6 × 8.3 × 12.9 inches (37.1 × 21.1 × 32.8 cm), height × width × depth, including the grille. Each speaker weighs 20.1 lb (9.1 kg). Check the depth and load capacity of any shelf or stand, and place it on a stable support.

It needs a separate amplifier. Audio 5.1 lists 8-ohm compatibility and a suitable amplifier range of 15–130 W; it also lists maximum input power as 80 W. These are retailer-published specifications, not independent measurements verified here. The review reports successful pairings with several amplifiers and use of matching stands, but the available material does not establish exact stand compatibility dimensions. Match the speaker to your amplifier’s guidance and your room rather than treating the seller’s power range as a promise of a particular listening level.

Finishes and Canadian availability
Paradigm’s bookshelf catalog listed Black Walnut as “Coming Soon” on the page accessed. Trutone’s listing offered black, walnut and black/walnut selections. Retailer listings can differ from the manufacturer’s catalog, and a listed finish is not proof of current stock.
Trutone states that its Premier v2 lineup can be heard at its Mississauga showroom, that it ships free across Canada, and that it provides a five-year warranty. Those are Trutone’s stated terms, not universal terms for every Canadian seller or a warranty claim independently confirmed here. Ask the retailer to confirm current audition availability, delivery conditions and warranty coverage.
Quick Recap
Who should consider it?
- Consider it if: you want a passive standmount with a revealing, open presentation and value image precision and apparent scale.
- Listen first if: you are sensitive to treble energy or prefer fuller, warmer-sounding vocals. The review’s tonal comparisons are useful guidance, but listening preferences and room results vary.
- Check your setup if: you plan to use a shelf or compact stand, or have not confirmed amplifier compatibility. Its dimensions and weight make support and placement practical concerns, not afterthoughts.
- Compare the offer carefully if: a price looks especially attractive. Check the currency, finish, stock, and whether the listed amount is for one speaker or a pair.
