Nintendo did not ignore Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door: it released a visually enhanced Nintendo Switch version in 2024, with an updated soundtrack and gameplay additions. But a rerelease is not the same thing as sustained attention. If “respect” means preserving and making the game playable, Nintendo’s actions count. If it means ongoing promotion, support, or a clear commitment to the series’ history, the available official record does not establish that.
What does “respect” mean in this case?
“Nintendo doesn’t respect the game” is an interpretation, not a fact established by Nintendo’s statements. A useful way to assess it is to separate several kinds of respect: preserving access to the game, improving its presentation, recognizing the people who made it, and continuing to promote or support it after release. The official record documents the first three to a degree; it cannot establish Nintendo’s motives or prove what the company thinks of the game.

The 22-year framing runs from the GameCube-era original in 2004 to 2026. Nintendo itself described the Switch edition, released in 2024, as arriving twenty years after the original. Those are different elapsed-time reference points, not evidence of a new game or sequel.
Nintendo brought the game back, but that is only one measure
Nintendo announced the Switch edition in its September 14, 2023 Nintendo Direct, calling it “a visually enhanced version of the Nintendo GameCube game Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door.” The company’s US product listing gives the release date as May 23, 2024 and describes the edition as arriving twenty years after the GameCube original.

That release is meaningful evidence of preservation and renewed access: Nintendo lists both a digital Switch version and a physical Switch edition. It also complicates the claim that the company simply ignored the game. But a rerelease alone cannot answer whether Nintendo consistently celebrates the game, supports it over time, or treats it as a continuing priority. The official product pages establish the release and features, not those broader judgments.
What changed in the Switch edition?
Nintendo’s US listing identifies several changes and additions rather than describing the Switch release as a straight port:

- 10013807
- Revamped graphics: Nintendo describes the visuals as revamped.
- Updated soundtrack: the product listing names an updated musical presentation.
- Updated quick-travel pipes: Nintendo lists these as a gameplay addition.
- Partner Ring: the feature lets players swap partner characters, which Nintendo says can be done “in a jiffy.”
These are concrete signs of work on the game, though the listings do not provide a detailed technical comparison. They do not establish exact resolution, frame rate, localization differences, sales, review scores, or whether any content was cut. Claims about those points would need evidence beyond Nintendo’s cited product descriptions.

Nintendo’s UK product page credits Nintendo as publisher and Intelligent Systems as developer, with the copyright line “© 2004 Nintendo. Game developed by INTELLIGENT SYSTEMS.” That distinction matters: Nintendo published the game, while Intelligent Systems is credited as its developer.

Nintendo lists a physical Switch edition and a digital Switch version. The physical-edition page specifies one player and TV, tabletop, and handheld modes. Nintendo also states that the game is compatible with Nintendo Switch 2 and that its behavior is consistent with Nintendo Switch; that is Nintendo’s product-page statement, not an independent performance test.

The strongest fair conclusion is narrower than the headline’s accusation. Nintendo’s 2024 enhanced edition shows the company was willing to bring the 2004 game back, update parts of its presentation and convenience features, and make it available on Switch. That is evidence of recognition and preservation—not proof of an ongoing commitment to the game or a wider strategy for honoring its legacy.

- A new paper-crafted Mario adventure unfolds on Nintendo Switch.
- The kingdom has been ravaged by an origami menace. Join Mario and his new partner, Olivia, as they battle evil Folded Soldiers, repair the damaged landscape, and try to free Princess Peach’s castle from the clutches of King Olly in this comedy-filled adventure
- Master strategic, ring-based battles - line up scattered enemies and plan your attack to maximize damage with the new, ring-based battle system that requires both puzzle-solving skills and a quick wit
Whether that feels like enough depends on the standard. For access and a refreshed release, the documented record points to respect. For continued promotion or support beyond the rerelease, the official sources cited here do not supply enough evidence to reach a confident verdict.
