Paper Girls and Saga are both Image Comics series written by Brian K. Vaughan, but they deliver fundamentally different reading experiences. Paper Girls is a completed, 30-issue coming-of-age mystery that starts with four 12-year-old newspaper carriers in suburban Ohio in 1988 and expands into time travel. Saga is an ongoing, mature space-opera fantasy about Alana and Marko, lovers from enemy worlds, raising their daughter Hazel while fleeing authorities and surviving a galactic war. Choose Paper Girls for a finished adolescent ensemble adventure; choose Saga for a larger, adult-oriented family epic that is still continuing.

The contrast in scale is an interpretation of the publishers’ premises, not a sales or page-count measurement: Paper Girls concentrates on one group of friends whose lives are disrupted by a time-bending mystery, while Saga continually opens outward into new planets, factions and family crises.

The different premises that drive each series
Paper Girls begins with a local mystery
Image introduces Paper Girls as a mysterious young-adult adventure. The opening hours after Halloween 1988 place Erin, KJ, Mac and Tiffany on their newspaper routes in a suburban community. Their ordinary job exposes them to events that do not fit their neighborhood or their understanding of history. The story’s engine is discovery: each answer about what happened to their town creates a larger question about time, identity and the futures they may—or may not—inhabit.

Saga starts with a family that should not exist
In Saga, Alana and Marko come from extraterrestrial races locked in a long-running conflict. Their relationship crosses that divide, and Hazel’s birth makes their family a target. The opening situation is therefore both intimate and political: the parents are trying to keep a newborn safe while authorities and combatants treat the child as a threat.
Hazel’s presence changes how the series tells its story. She is not merely a passenger in her parents’ escape; she occasionally narrates, framing events with knowledge that the adults and readers do not yet possess. The family’s movement through the galaxy allows Vaughan and Staples to shift from war zones to strange communities, but the central question remains personal: how can parents build a life when every power around them wants to define or destroy the family?
How the narrative engines differ
Mystery and time in Paper Girls
Paper Girls asks readers to assemble a puzzle alongside the protagonists. Information arrives through encounters, reversals and glimpses of possible futures. Time travel is not a decorative setting; it changes what the girls believe about their town, their families and the adults they may become. The compact cast means that revelations are measured against established friendships. A plot turn matters because it can alter the girls’ understanding of one another as much as it alters the timeline.
This structure rewards a concentrated read. Vaughan described the complete run as a “complex journey through time” that works particularly well as “one epic binge-read” in Image’s 2021 complete-series announcement (publisher announcement). That description is about the finished collection, not a claim that every reader must read it quickly; the point is that all 30 issues form one designed arc rather than an unfinished sequence.
Family survival and world expansion in Saga
Saga uses flight, parenthood and war as recurring pressures. Alana and Marko must protect Hazel, negotiate with people who have their own reasons to intervene, and deal with the consequences of belonging to opposing cultures. New locations and supporting characters can redirect the plot, but they remain connected to the family’s attempt to stay together.

The series can therefore feel episodic in its settings while remaining cumulative in its emotional consequences. A decision made during an escape can affect the family many volumes later. Since the comic is ongoing, readers should expect unresolved developments rather than a final endpoint. Image’s catalog currently lists Saga through issue #72 and collected editions through volume 12; neither fact supports calling the series complete.
Protagonists: four friends versus a young family
The ensemble in Paper Girls
- Erin: One of the four delivery riders whose first encounter with the mystery defines the group’s early direction.
- KJ: A member of the team whose perspective helps show that the girls’ private lives and assumptions differ even when they share the same danger.
- Mac: Part of the original quartet and a source of friction as the girls test what courage and independence mean.
- Tiffany: The fourth rider, completing a group whose contrasting personalities make cooperation necessary rather than automatic.
The names are less important as a roll call than as a promise about the reading experience: the story distributes attention among four peers. No single hero has to explain the whole world, and the friendships are tested collectively.

- Alana: A parent and former member of one side of the interplanetary conflict.
- Marko: Alana’s partner, from the opposing extraterrestrial race.
- Hazel: Their daughter and, at times, the narrator who places the family’s experiences in a wider context.
That arrangement makes parenthood an active plot problem. Alana and Marko cannot simply pursue individual goals; every choice affects a child whose existence has political meaning. Hazel’s narration also creates distance between the moment an event occurs and the perspective from which it is remembered.
Setting, tone and content guidance
What the T+ and M labels mean here
The cited Paper Girls collected editions carry a T+ rating, while the Saga Box Set carries an M rating. These are publisher labels attached to specific editions, not universal judgments about artistic quality or a guarantee that every reader will find one series suitable. Check the rating and content information for the particular edition you plan to buy.
In practical terms, the labels signal different expectations. Paper Girls uses peril, violence, frightening science-fiction imagery and adolescent characters while retaining a young-adult orientation. Saga is aimed at mature readers and combines graphic violence, sex, profanity, disturbing situations and adult emotional themes with its fantasy and science-fiction world. The rating difference is one of the clearest reasons not to treat the books as interchangeable.

Local nostalgia and alien scale
Paper Girls anchors its first act in a recognizable suburban setting and the period detail of 1988. Bicycles, newspaper routes and the morning after Halloween establish a familiar baseline before the impossible intrudes. The contrast between ordinary surroundings and giant, unfamiliar forces is part of the comic’s appeal.

Saga starts with a family on the run in a universe shaped by war. Its settings can be fantastical, grotesque or technologically strange, and its conflicts are not limited to one town or one historical period. Readers who want a tightly bounded mystery may find that scale overwhelming; readers who enjoy continual world-building may find it essential.
Completion status changes the buying decision
Paper Girls is a finished 30-issue story
Image’s series information and complete collection identify a 30-issue run, ending with issue #30 dated July 31, 2019. That makes it suitable for readers who want to begin with confidence that the central story has an established ending. You can read the full arc without waiting for future installments or tracking publication gaps.
Saga remains ongoing
Image’s current Saga page lists issue #72, dated March 19, 2025, and collections through volume 12. The available material is substantial, but it is not the entire series. Starting Saga means accepting that later chapters may change the family’s circumstances and that a final conclusion has not been announced in the cited catalog information.
Art and collaboration
Cliff Chiang and Matt Wilson on Paper Girls
Cliff Chiang’s line work gives the four girls and their environments a clear, readable presence, while Matt Wilson’s colors help distinguish the familiar 1988 world from the story’s more uncanny moments. In Image’s 2021 announcement, Chiang described the 30 issues as filled with “mystery, friendship, and giant robots” (announcement). The phrase captures the blend of intimate group dynamics and oversized science-fiction spectacle without reducing the series to either one.

Fiona Staples on Saga
Fiona Staples is Vaughan’s co-creator and the series artist. Her work has to make alien species, planets, weapons and domestic scenes feel part of one visual world. The result is a comic in which the family’s quiet interactions and the galaxy’s large-scale conflicts belong to the same visual language.
Vaughan explained the role of Hazel’s viewpoint in Image’s 2014 deluxe-edition announcement: “Saga is the story of Hazel, and each hardcover edition will feature her at a different stage of life in a new cover from co-creator Fiona Staples” (announcement). The statement identifies Hazel as the series’ long-term organizing perspective, even when individual volumes focus on her parents or other characters.

Choose the complete paperback if you already know you want the entire finished story or prefer one large volume. Choose the Backpack Edition Vol. 1 if you want a lighter, lower-cover-price entry and would rather test the premise before buying the remaining material. The backpack edition is only the opening 10 issues, so it is not a substitute for the complete collection.

The box set is a substantial starting collection, but it does not reach the end of the ongoing series. Image’s catalog lists later collections through volume 12, so readers who finish the box set should expect additional books rather than a conclusion.

Pick Paper Girls when these priorities fit
- You want a complete story with a known endpoint.
- You prefer a small ensemble whose friendships remain the emotional center.
- You enjoy 1980s suburban settings, mystery clues and time-travel paradoxes.
- You want a T+ publisher rating on the cited collection rather than an M-rated book.
- You would rather buy one complete paperback than begin an ongoing series.
Pick Saga when these priorities fit
- You want space opera and fantasy built around a family rather than a school-age friend group.
- You enjoy stories that keep introducing planets, cultures and political factions.
- You are comfortable with mature content and the M rating on the cited box set.
- You prefer a long-running saga and do not require a finished ending before starting.
- You are interested in Hazel’s evolving perspective as a framing device.
If you are deciding on format rather than premise
- For a self-contained purchase, select Paper Girls: The Complete Story TP.
- For a smaller trial of Paper Girls, begin with the Backpack Edition Vol. 1 and continue only if the first 10 issues suit you.
- For a substantial introduction to Saga, use the box set’s volumes 1–9, then continue with later collections listed by Image.
- Check the edition-level rating and content information before giving either collection to a younger reader.
Common mistakes when comparing them
Assuming both are the same kind of science fiction
Time travel is the disruptive technology in Paper Girls, and the story keeps returning to the girls’ relationships and possible futures. Saga uses speculative elements as the foundation of an entire interplanetary society. Calling both simply “sci-fi comics” hides the difference between a focused mystery and a family-centered space fantasy.

- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.

Calling Saga complete because a box set is available
A box set is a packaging choice, not a completion marker. The cited set ends at volume 9, while Image lists collections through volume 12 and issue #72 dated March 19, 2025. Verify the latest catalog information if you need the newest available volume.
Treating cover prices as current shop prices
The $49.99 and $12.99 figures on the Paper Girls release pages are publisher cover prices. They are not guarantees of what a retailer currently charges, whether a copy is in stock or whether a promotion applies.
Recognition and historical context
Image’s 2025 Backpack Edition page describes Paper Girls as a five-time Eisner Award winner; that statement does not specify the award years. Image’s 2021 complete-series announcement calls the run 30 issues and presents the compendium as the finished collection. These are publisher-reported distinctions, useful as context but not a substitute for deciding which premise and format fit you.
Recommended Free Tools
Image’s 2014 announcement also reported that the three Saga volumes available at that time had reached number one on The New York Times bestseller list, with volume one spending more than 70 weeks in the top 10. Those figures describe the historical 2014-era releases and should not be read as current rankings.
A practical decision in one minute
Ask yourself two questions. Do you need a finished story? If yes, start with Paper Girls. Do you want a mature family epic whose world can keep expanding, and are you willing to follow an ongoing publication? If yes, start with Saga. If both answers appeal to you, read Paper Girls first for its contained 30-issue arc, then use the Saga box set as the larger commitment.
