Panasonic LUMIX ZS300 Review: A Pocketable Camera With 15x Zoom

The Panasonic LUMIX ZS300 is a travel camera built around a useful compromise: a compact body, a 1-type sensor and a 15x optical zoom that covers wide scenes and distant details. Its 24–360mm-equivalent range (in 3:2 format) and retracting lens make it an appealing all-in-one option for travel. The tradeoffs are significant for some photographers: it has no viewfinder, its rear touchscreen is fixed, and its lens becomes relatively dim at the long end.

What the Panasonic LUMIX ZS300 offers

Panasonic’s 2026 specification page lists a 1-type BSI CMOS sensor with 20.1 effective megapixels and a 15x optical zoom. The lens covers 24–360mm equivalent in 3:2 format; the equivalent range changes with aspect ratio and recording mode. Its maximum aperture is f/3.3–6.4, meaning less light reaches the sensor as you zoom in.

The lens retracts into the camera body for carrying. Panasonic lists the camera at 337 g with battery and SD memory card, and specifies 5-axis Hybrid O.I.S.+ stabilization. The stabilization footnote limits 5-axis compensation to video other than 4K recording. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent performance measurements. How much zoom does the ZS300 have?

It has 15x optical zoom, with a 24–360mm-equivalent range in 3:2 format. That range is the camera’s standard optical reach. Panasonic also documents 30x extended or extra optical zoom at selected reduced picture sizes. Digital zoom is a separate mode and reduces image quality, so neither should be treated as equivalent to the full-resolution 15x optical zoom.

What are the main compromises?

No viewfinder and a fixed screen

RTINGS identifies the rear touchscreen as fixed and reports that the ZS300 has no viewfinder. That matters if you prefer composing at eye level, work in bright conditions where a screen is harder to see, or need to tilt the display for high- or low-angle shots. Buyers who rely on an electronic viewfinder or an articulated screen should treat these as meaningful limitations, not minor omissions. RTINGS’ ZS300 review and comparisons

A lens that gets dimmer at telephoto

The f/3.3–6.4 maximum-aperture range means the lens is less bright at the telephoto end than at wide angle. In practical terms, this can make dim scenes and fast-moving subjects more challenging as you zoom in. A larger sensor or brighter lens system may be preferable if low-light telephoto shooting is a priority.

Not a weather-sealed interchangeable-lens system

RTINGS reports that the camera is not weather-sealed. Its fixed lens also means you cannot swap to a brighter lens, a wider lens or a different focal length. The appeal is carrying one camera with a broad built-in range; the compromise is less flexibility than an interchangeable-lens system.

Is the ZS300 good for travel photography?

It is a plausible choice if you want one compact camera for landscapes, city scenes and distant details without carrying multiple lenses. RTINGS describes it as decent for travel photography, noting the 15x range, retracting lens and compact carry, as well as the larger sensor compared with many travel zooms that use smaller sensors. The 1-type sensor does not make it equivalent to a larger-sensor camera, but it is part of what distinguishes this model from smaller-sensor long-zoom compacts.

Consider another kind of camera if your travel photography depends on a viewfinder, a screen that tilts or flips, weather sealing, stronger moving-subject autofocus, or bright telephoto shooting. Those are feature-based considerations rather than a guarantee of how any individual camera will perform for you.

ZS300 vs. ZS99, RX100 VII and G5 X Mark II

These alternatives prioritize different features, according to RTINGS’ comparisons. The table summarizes those review findings; it does not imply that every model is better for every photographer.

Camera What the review says it offers Tradeoff relative to the ZS300
Panasonic LUMIX ZS99 30x zoom and a flip-up screen The ZS300 has the 1-type sensor advantage and better RAW quality in RTINGS’ comparison.
Sony RX100 VII Smaller, lighter body; pop-up EVF; tilting screen; microphone input; more reliable moving-subject autofocus The ZS300 reaches farther telephoto.
Canon PowerShot G5 X Mark II Brighter lens; pop-up finder; flip-out screen; built-in ND filter The ZS300 offers more telephoto reach.
Entry-level interchangeable-lens camera with kit lens Larger sensor, more extensive video options and the ability to change lenses It is less pocketable, and matching the ZS300’s full range may require lens changes or a bulkier superzoom lens.

For the ZS99, the core decision is sensor and RAW quality versus greater zoom and a flip-up screen. The RX100 VII and G5 X Mark II emphasize finder and screen features, with the RX100 VII also favored in RTINGS’ moving-subject autofocus comparison. An interchangeable-lens camera is the more flexible route, but it gives up the ZS300’s all-in-one pocketable convenience. RTINGS’ comparisons

  • 52x Optical Zoom Camera: Reach distant subjects with a 24mm wide angle lens spanning sweeping landscapes to tight telephoto shots of birds, wildlife, and athletes; genuine optical sharpness, not a digital crop
  • 6fps Burst Mode: Catch the decisive moment in fast action; 6fps shooting captures rapid sequences of wildlife and sports, then review on the 3in LCD and keep the sharpest frame
  • 16MP BSI CMOS Sensor: Sharp, detailed images with better low-light performance; built-in OIS counters hand movement even at full 52x reach, so handheld telephoto shots stay crisp without a tripod
  • Built-in Wi-Fi: Share straight from the field; connect to your phone or tablet to transfer photos and post immediately, or use the phone as a live remote viewfinder; 1080p Full HD video records smooth sequences
  • Rechargeable Li-Ion Battery: Power extended sessions in the field; accepts Class 10 SD, SDHC, or SDXC cards up to 1.5TB for thousands of photos and hours of Full HD video across a full day of shooting

Should you buy the Panasonic LUMIX ZS300?

The ZS300 makes the most sense for travelers who value a pocketable camera with substantial built-in reach more than an EVF, an adjustable screen or lens choice. Its 15x optical zoom, 1-type sensor and retracting lens form a coherent travel package; the fixed screen, lack of a finder and relatively dim telephoto aperture define its limits.

Panasonic’s May 1, 2026 announcement describes the camera as combining a 15x optical zoom and 1.0-type BSI CMOS sensor to deliver clear, detailed images in challenging lighting. That is the manufacturer’s product positioning, not independent lab evidence. Regional materials use the name TZ300; ZS300 is the North American designation.
