What Crude Oil does in Palworld
Crude Oil is an advanced crafting ingredient used after your character reaches the late-game technology tiers. It is not a general-purpose fuel that you pour into every machine; instead, it is consumed by specific recipes for high-end materials, weapons and ammunition. Because the extractor has an unusually heavy electricity requirement, obtaining oil is both a resource problem and a base-power planning problem.

You can obtain smaller amounts from oil-rig treasure chests and from certain hostile Pal drops, but those methods depend on exploration or combat and do not provide the same repeatable production as an extractor operating on a field.
How to unlock the Crude Oil Extractor
Technology requirement
The Crude Oil Extractor appears at technology level 50 and costs two technology points to unlock. Reaching the level alone does not place an extractor in your build menu: you must spend the points on its technology entry first.

The recipe is a significant investment. If you are close to level 50, it is sensible to avoid spending the two points on a lower-priority unlock when your immediate goal is oil production. Conversely, unlocking the extractor before you can supply it with electricity leaves an expensive structure idle, so material preparation and power preparation should be treated as one project.

Recognizing a usable field
Oil fields are visible resource deposits in the world. The extractor does not work merely because it is built at a convenient base location; its footprint must overlap an oil field. Think of the field as the placement target and the extractor as a structure that has to sit on that target.

A reported low-level option
A location guide published on August 14, 2026 identifies Sunlit Isle near coordinates (405, -483) as a lower-level base option and reports six crude-oil nodes there. Coordinates and node counts can change with patches, so treat those figures as a lead rather than a permanent guarantee. Check the current in-game map or a recently updated map before committing your main base to that location.
Choosing between a field and your existing base
The best oil base is usually the field that lets you place the extractor correctly while giving you enough room and electrical capacity to operate it. A visually convenient spot that is not on a field cannot produce oil. A field with no practical room for power infrastructure may also become frustrating once the extractor is running. Scout the deposit first, then decide whether to establish a dedicated outpost or relocate your production footprint.
Building and placing the extractor
- Reach technology level 50. Open the technology menu and spend two technology points on the Crude Oil Extractor.
- Prepare the recipe. Collect 250 Pal Metal Ingots and 50 Circuit Boards before traveling to the field. This avoids making a long trip only to discover that construction is incomplete.
- Scout the field. Identify the visible oil deposit and choose a location where the extractor’s placement area can overlap it.
- Open the build menu. Select the Crude Oil Extractor after it becomes available from the level-50 technology unlock.
- Align the structure with the deposit. Move the preview until the extractor is directly on the oil field. If the game does not accept the placement, adjust the structure rather than building beside the deposit.
- Complete construction. Spend the Pal Metal Ingots and Circuit Boards to finish the extractor.
- Connect reliable electricity. The extractor only generates oil while powered. Build or reserve enough generation and storage capacity before you depend on its output.
- Observe the base after activation. Start with the extractor powered and check whether other powered structures remain online. If they shut down or stored electricity falls rapidly, increase generation or storage before adding further extractors or machinery.
Placement and power are separate checks. An extractor can be perfectly positioned and still produce nothing if electricity is unavailable; it can also have power available but fail to operate if it was built beside, rather than on, the field.

Power planning: the mistake that stops oil bases
The extractor has exceptionally high electrical demand. When generation is insufficient, it can rapidly drain stored electricity and cause other powered structures in the base to shut down. This is the most important operational risk once the structure is built.

Prepare capacity before switching it on
- Calculate your current electrical load in practical terms: note which machines already consume power and whether your reserve normally remains stable.
- Build or reserve additional generation before construction is complete, rather than waiting for the first blackout.
- Keep storage capacity available so brief fluctuations do not immediately stop production.
- Bring the extractor online before expanding other high-load machinery, allowing you to identify its effect on the base.
- Scale oil production gradually. A second extractor or additional powered equipment can turn a stable base into one that repeatedly empties its reserve.
Symptoms of an undersized power system

Do not judge the base solely by whether the extractor starts. A sustainable oil base is one that keeps the extractor operating without repeatedly sacrificing every other powered function.
Emergency sources when you need oil now
If you have not reached level 50, lack the construction materials or cannot yet support the extractor’s power demand, two limited routes can bridge the gap.

Use rigs and hostile-Pal drops to finish a specific craft or keep moving through progression. Use an extractor when your consumption is regular enough that repeated combat and chest runs are becoming the bottleneck.

Setting a priority
There is no universal best use. Allocate oil according to the obstacle in front of you:
- Choose Plasteel when advanced construction or progression materials are the limiting factor.
- Choose Flamethrower Fuel when you need a compact fuel conversion and already have the weapon use planned.
- Choose Frag Grenade Mk2 when explosive damage is the immediate combat requirement and you can supply Gunpowder and Pal Metal Ingots.
- Choose Missile Ammo when launchers are your priority and Circuit Boards, Pal Fluids and Pal Metal Ingots are available.
Because every one of these recipes draws from the same oil reserve, avoid spending the entire stock on a secondary craft immediately before a progression gate that requires Plasteel or ammunition.
Choosing the right oil-base strategy
For a small emergency quantity
Start with an oil-rig chest or an eligible hostile-Pal drop if you need only enough oil to complete one near-term recipe. This approach avoids the level-50 unlock and the heavy infrastructure commitment, but it is intentionally temporary.
For regular crafting
Move to an extractor when oil is repeatedly limiting Plasteel, Frag Grenade Mk2, Flamethrower Fuel or Missile Ammo. The extractor’s construction cost is high, yet its continuous operation removes the need to depend on the next chest or favorable enemy drop.
For a dedicated oil outpost
A separate field base can make sense when your main base cannot safely absorb the extractor’s electrical demand. The trade-off is travel and another site to maintain. The field must still be directly under the extractor, and the outpost must have enough generation and storage to keep production from starving other facilities.

For an existing central base
Using an oil field inside or near your established base is convenient, but convenience does not reduce the power requirement. Protect the machines you cannot afford to lose by bringing the extractor online only after generation and storage have been expanded.

- Plan where generation and storage will go before placing the extractor.
- Decide whether your first oil batch is for Plasteel, Flamethrower Fuel, Frag Grenade Mk2 or Missile Ammo.
- Keep a temporary chest-run or combat route in mind in case the extractor base is not yet power-stable.
Troubleshooting an extractor that is not producing
The extractor is not on the field
The most common placement error is building beside the visible deposit. Re-enter building mode or inspect the structure’s position and move it so the extractor directly overlaps the oil field. A nearby location is not equivalent to a valid one.
The extractor has no electricity
Confirm that your generation system is active and that stored electricity is not empty. The extractor generates oil only while powered, so a disconnected or exhausted electrical supply stops production.
The extractor repeatedly causes blackouts
Increase generation and storage, then test the extractor without adding other high-load equipment. If other structures still shut down, the base remains undersized for the extractor’s demand. Running fewer machines at once may stabilize the system while you build more capacity.
You cannot yet afford the recipe
Continue using oil-rig chests and eligible hostile-Pal drops for limited quantities while collecting Pal Metal Ingots and Circuit Boards. These sources do not remove the level-50 requirement, but they can keep a single recipe from halting your progression.
Your planned coordinates no longer match the map
Do not assume that a coordinate published on August 14, 2026 is permanent. Recheck the current map and inspect the terrain in your own game before investing in a base at Sunlit Isle or any other named field.
How to manage oil once production starts
Keep your spending tied to a stated goal. If you are building toward Plasteel, calculate the required oil by multiplying the number of units by five before using oil on grenades or fuel. If ammunition is the priority, count rounds and include the other recipe materials so oil does not become the only stocked component.
Separate emergency consumption from planned production. A chest run can cover a one-off shortage, while the extractor should be reserved for the sustained supply that justified its technology points, materials and power infrastructure. This distinction prevents a temporary combat need from consuming the reserve intended for a major build.
Finally, monitor the electrical system whenever you change the base. Adding powered machinery can alter whether the extractor remains continuously active, even if it worked correctly when first installed. Oil production is reliable only when both conditions remain true: the structure stays over an oil field and the base continues to supply enough electricity.
