Palantir UK executive Tom Watson reportedly accused Labour MP Clive Lewis of making “incorrect claims” about the company’s public-sector work, citing figures about the NHS Federated Data Platform (FDP). Those figures show trusts reporting benefits, but the NHS regulator says the before-and-after comparisons cannot establish that the platform caused the changes.
What did Tom Watson say to Clive Lewis?
According to The Register’s 1 October 2026 report, Watson, Palantir’s newly appointed UK senior vice president, wrote to Lewis challenging statements about Palantir’s work in healthcare, policing and defence. The report says Watson drew on public statements, parliamentary material, interviews, opinion writing and social posts, and cited NHS FDP uptake and benefit figures to support his objections.
Watson’s description of Lewis’s claims as “incorrect” is Watson’s reported position, not proof that every claim in dispute was wrong. The original letter was not available for independent review, so its contents should be attributed to The Register’s account. The Register also reports that Lewis said the letter’s detail felt like “we’re watching you.” That is Lewis’s reported characterization; the reporting does not establish that Watson made a threat.
What do the NHS FDP figures show?
The Register reports that Watson said the FDP was live at 142 NHS trusts and that 137 were “already reporting benefits.” These are reported uptake and benefit-reporting figures. On their own, they do not tell readers how benefits were defined, how large they were, or whether the platform caused them.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The report describes examples tied to particular tools and outcomes. They should not be treated as equivalent measures or generalized beyond their stated groups:
- Inpatient coordination tool: NHS England’s reported benefit calculation associated the tool with 111,589 additional patients undergoing procedures in operating theatres. The Register reports that Foxglove found 13 of the 41 trusts using that tool carried out fewer operations after its introduction.
- Outpatient waiting-list tool: Chelsea and Westminster Hospital NHS Foundation Trust accounted for 84 percent of the reported fall across the 16 trusts using the relevant tool, according to The Register.
The first figure is a calculated benefit associated with one tool; the other figures describe variation among trusts using specific tools. They are not three independent measures of the FDP’s overall effect. The Register notes that staffing, case complexity and bed capacity can also affect procedure numbers. Those factors make simple before-and-after interpretations uncertain; they do not demonstrate that the platform had no effect.

Why can’t before-and-after figures prove the platform worked?
The Office for Statistics Regulation (OSR), the UK statistics regulator, explained the limitation in its 22 July 2026 statement on NHS England’s FDP metrics. The relevant figures compare performance before and after an FDP product was introduced. Because other variables were not controlled, the comparisons show observed changes, not a demonstrated causal effect.
OSR says NHS England added this caveat to relevant methods sections on 6 June 2026: “We cannot therefore draw conclusions about cause and effect as other variables have not been controlled for.” In practical terms, a metric can record a change after a product arrives without showing what would have happened over the same period without it. Changes in staffing, demand, capacity or the complexity of cases may contribute to the result.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
OSR also distinguishes between counts of actions taken through FDP products and calculated benefits based on before-and-after performance comparisons. A count of actions describes recorded activity; a calculated benefit makes a broader comparison that depends on assumptions and methodology. Neither should be described as proof of causation unless the evaluation design supports that conclusion.
What do the trust-level examples establish?
The reported results that 13 of 41 trusts using the inpatient tool carried out fewer operations after its introduction, and that one trust represented 84 percent of the outpatient waiting-list fall across 16 trusts, complicate broad claims that benefits were evenly distributed or straightforward to attribute. They do not settle whether the FDP helped overall.

To judge any specific benefit claim, readers need to know what outcome was measured, which trusts or patients were included, the comparison period and denominator, and whether other influences were accounted for or a suitable control group was used. Without those details, an aggregate before-and-after figure cannot show how much of an observed change was due to the platform.

OSR welcomed NHS England’s commitments to label before-and-after metrics clearly, explain the limits on causal interpretation in public communications, clarify methodological changes, publish trust-level benefit information and consider comparisons with controls. Its statement says NHS England commissioned Imperial College to conduct an independent academic evaluation, prioritising the Inpatients and OPTICA products.

The OSR statement records those commitments and the evaluation plan; it does not provide completed evaluation findings. Until results from a suitable evaluation are available, the reported figures support a narrower conclusion: trusts have reported benefits and some performance measures changed after product introductions, but these comparisons alone do not establish that the FDP caused the changes.
