Pakistan’s Jinnah-1 is planned to travel to the Moon aboard China’s Chang’e-8 mission, but its launch year is not settled in the public information available: SUPARCO’s program page still lists 2028, while coverage of the agency’s August 2026 naming announcement reports 2029. The rover is intended for the lunar south pole and is designed to study the surface and test technologies for future lunar exploration.
When will Jinnah-1 go to the Moon?
The public schedule is inconsistent. SUPARCO’s Lunar Rover Program page labels the launch as 2028 and says Chang’e-8 is set for that year. But the Associated Press of Pakistan’s report on the naming announcement says Jinnah-1 is scheduled to launch in 2029, as does Dawn’s August 13, 2026 report, which attributes the schedule to SUPARCO.
The available statements do not establish whether SUPARCO formally revised the schedule or whether its program page has not been updated. For now, 2028 is the year shown on the agency’s program page; 2029 is the later schedule reported alongside the naming announcement. Neither should be presented as a confirmed launch date without a newer, explicit schedule statement.
What is Jinnah-1, and where is it going?
Jinnah-1 is SUPARCO’s first named indigenous lunar rover. The agency plans for it to travel as part of China’s Chang’e-8 mission, whose work SUPARCO associates with the International Lunar Research Station (ILRS) project. The intended landing region is the lunar south pole.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
SUPARCO describes the rover as weighing approximately 35 kilograms. That is the agency’s stated figure, not an independently verified measurement. Public information cited here does not provide a detailed instrument list, dimensions, travel range, power budget, expected operating life or communications design.
What will the rover study?
The planned work focuses on lunar surface science and technology demonstration. SUPARCO lists lunar-soil study, surface mapping and tests of technologies relevant to later lunar and planetary exploration and sustainable human presence. Reports on the naming announcement also identify lunar plasma and radiation studies, terrain mapping and experiments connected to future lunar research and human presence.

These are mission objectives, not results: Jinnah-1 has not yet carried out the work on the Moon. The available sources do not describe the specific instruments or experiments in enough detail to say how each measurement will be made.
How was the rover named?
SUPARCO announced the name in August 2026 after a nationwide naming contest. Dawn reports that the agency received 4,000 proposals, with seven entrants independently suggesting “Jinnah-1.” The winner was selected by balloting: 17-year-old Tayyab Karim Khan of Bahawalnagar.

Jinnah-1 is a planned surface rover, distinct from iCube-Qamar, Pakistan’s earlier lunar exploration effort. SUPARCO says iCube-Qamar launched from China’s Hainan province aboard Chang’e-6 on May 3, 2024. Developed with Pakistan’s Institute of Space Technology and China’s Shanghai Jiao Tong University, the spacecraft is an orbiter carrying two optical cameras—not a rover operating on the lunar surface.
