P.T. and Resident Evil 7: Biohazard look similar at first glance because both use first-person perspective, realistic environments and close-quarters horror. They are not the same kind of game, however. P.T. is a short playable teaser built around repeatedly interpreting changes in one domestic space, while Resident Evil 7 is a complete survival-horror game with sustained exploration, combat and resource-management systems. The resemblance explains why people compare them; available developer comments do not prove that P.T. directly caused Resident Evil 7’s design.
The short answer: a concentrated teaser versus a complete survival-horror game
The most useful distinction is scope. P.T. means “playable teaser”: it was made to advertise the planned Silent Hills, not to serve as a complete campaign. Its horror comes from returning to a constrained domestic corridor and working out what environmental changes and clues mean. The experience is intentionally compressed, ambiguous and interpretive.

Resident Evil 7: Biohazard is a full entry in Capcom’s survival-horror series. Capcom says the team wanted players to encounter horror and exploration first, then experience those priorities in a larger game set around a house and its surrounding story. The first-person view places the player directly in the character’s position, but the game uses that viewpoint inside a sustained structure that includes exploration, combat and survival systems.
That means P.T. is better understood as a tightly controlled experiment in psychological unease, whereas Resident Evil 7 turns first-person horror into a longer survival-horror journey. One asks you to interpret a changing space; the other asks you to navigate a broader world while staying alive.

The table describes the design contrast, not a claim that every mechanic in P.T. has been exhaustively documented. In particular, the safest comparison is that P.T. concentrates on a constrained puzzle-horror experience, while Resident Evil 7 embeds first-person horror in a broader survival-horror game.
What P.T. is designed to do
A teaser, not the canceled full game
P.T. was released as a playable teaser for Silent Hills. A 2026 retrospective by PC Gamer reports that it appeared on the PlayStation Network in 2014 and was delisted in early 2015 after the larger project was canceled. That history matters because the teaser’s limited scale is intentional: it presents a sample of a proposed horror experience rather than a complete campaign with all the systems a finished game would require. PC Gamer’s account is the basis for those release and delisting details.
Do not treat the teaser as a short version of Resident Evil 7. P.T. was built to make a narrow slice of space feel increasingly unstable. Its success depends on withholding certainty: the player sees a familiar hallway, notices that something is different, and has to determine whether the change is visual, spatial, supernatural or connected to a clue.
The recurring-space structure
P.T.’s central design idea is repetition with variation. You return to a domestic route that appears familiar, but the context changes from pass to pass. The player’s job is therefore partly observational and partly interpretive. Progress depends on paying attention to details, testing possible actions and deciding what a visual or audio change might signify.
This structure produces a distinctive kind of tension. A conventional level teaches you a route and then opens a new one; P.T. makes the known route itself unreliable. Familiarity becomes a source of dread because you know the geometry, yet cannot trust that the next traversal will behave the same way.
Why ambiguity is part of the horror
P.T. does not need a large map to create uncertainty. The limited space focuses attention on small changes and on the player’s own interpretation. You may understand that something has changed without immediately knowing why it matters or what response the game expects. That gap between noticing and understanding is the core activity.
It is more accurate to describe P.T. as puzzle-like and interpretive than to assign it a detailed list of conventional mechanics that the available evidence does not establish. The important point is how the teaser makes observation, inference and anticipation carry the experience.

What Resident Evil 7 is designed to do
A full survival-horror framework
Resident Evil 7 uses first-person presentation inside a complete game rather than a self-contained teaser. The player explores a broader setting, follows a sustained scenario and engages with the combat and survival systems associated with a full survival-horror title. Its house setting is not merely a loop to decode; it is part of a larger environment that supports movement, discovery, danger and progression.
Capcom’s developer interview identifies horror and exploration as the priorities the team wanted players to experience up front. The developers describe the game as starting with those two pillars rather than treating horror as a brief introductory effect. Capcom’s interview quotes the design goal: “Those are all in this game, but we wanted to start off with the first two – horror and exploration – and get you experiencing those two pillars up front.”
Exploration has a different role
In P.T., revisiting one route is the principal event. In Resident Evil 7, exploration serves a larger progression. You investigate spaces, move between areas and make decisions while the game’s survival systems remain active. The environment can still create uncertainty, but you are not only interpreting a loop; you are learning a game world and managing the consequences of moving through it.
Survival pressure changes the player’s priorities
A full survival-horror structure gives the player more than atmosphere to consider. Threats, traversal and the use of available resources become part of the decision-making. This changes the emotional rhythm: fear is not limited to wondering what a room means, but also includes deciding when to advance, when to search and how to respond to danger. The result is a broader form of tension than the teaser’s concentrated interpretive challenge.
How the horror itself differs
P.T.: psychological unease through uncertainty
P.T.’s strongest tool is uncertainty about a familiar place. The recurring domestic space is close enough to memorize that even a small alteration feels significant. Because the player repeatedly sees the same architecture, the mind becomes an active part of the scare: you compare the current pass with your memory of the previous one and look for meaning in the difference.
This is horror built from implication. The game can make you uncomfortable before you can explain what is wrong. Its short format allows it to sustain a single escalating idea without having to diversify the threat or provide a long-term progression system.
Resident Evil 7: immersion plus sustained danger
Resident Evil 7 also uses intimacy and realism, but it places those qualities inside a longer survival-horror design. First-person view keeps the character’s body and field of vision close to the player, while exploration and danger give that perspective practical consequences. A threat is not only something to interpret; it can affect where you go and how you proceed.

Capcom’s emphasis on horror and exploration means the game is structured to let discovery and fear operate together. You move through a setting to learn more, but each new area can also introduce risk, obstacles or decisions that matter beyond a single loop.

Both games use darkness, domestic realism, restricted knowledge and first-person closeness. They differ in how those ingredients are arranged. P.T. repeats a small space until the familiar becomes suspect. Resident Evil 7 uses a larger survival-horror framework in which exploration, encounters and progression keep changing the player’s immediate problem.
How the gameplay differs
Repetition versus progression
P.T.’s repeated route is the content. Each pass asks whether you can identify a meaningful change and infer the next step. The design narrows your physical options while expanding the number of possible interpretations.
Resident Evil 7 uses progression across a broader game. Exploration is still important, but it leads somewhere: through connected spaces, story developments and survival situations. The player’s question is less often “what changed in this loop?” and more often “where can I go, what have I learned and how should I handle the next threat?”
Interpretive puzzles versus survival decisions
The teaser’s puzzle-like quality comes from observation and inference. It is safest to describe those activities without claiming a complete, formally documented mechanic list for P.T. Resident Evil 7, by contrast, is explicitly framed as a survival-horror game, so combat and survival systems are part of the full experience. Those systems add an ongoing layer of decision-making that a teaser-scale loop does not need.

Pacing and duration
P.T. can concentrate escalation because it does not have to maintain a campaign’s worth of variety. A small change can carry enormous weight when the player has just passed the same point several times. Resident Evil 7 has to pace fear across a complete game, alternating discovery and danger so that the experience remains playable as well as frightening.
This is why someone can prefer P.T. even if they enjoy Resident Evil 7. The teaser’s intensity comes from compression; the full game’s appeal comes from sustained systems and progression. They solve different design problems.

Perspective as a design tool
First person does not automatically make two games alike. In P.T., the viewpoint increases disorientation because the player is physically close to a space that keeps changing. In Resident Evil 7, it also supports navigation, encounters and the feeling of occupying the protagonist’s position throughout a larger adventure.
Capcom’s investor interview says the first-person view was chosen to put players directly in the character’s position. The same interview states that Resident Evil 7 biohazard was fully compatible with PlayStation VR and calls it Capcom’s first VR title at the time. That is an official historical statement, not a guarantee that every current headset, console configuration or edition offers identical support. Read Capcom’s investor interview for the original context.
Is Resident Evil 7 like P.T.?
It is like P.T. in presentation and mood, not in overall structure. Both helped popularize a comparison based on first-person horror, photorealistic environments and the feeling that an ordinary domestic setting has become unsafe. Both place the player close to the action rather than viewing it from a distant camera.
The comparison stops being useful if it implies that Resident Evil 7 is a longer P.T. Resident Evil 7 is built as a complete survival-horror game. It has a broader setting, sustained exploration and systems for dealing with danger. P.T. is a teaser whose power depends on a constrained recurring space and on the player interpreting what has changed.
A useful shorthand is: P.T. is a controlled horror puzzle about one unstable place; Resident Evil 7 is a survival-horror journey in which first-person immersion supports exploration and ongoing danger.

The games were publicly compared around Resident Evil 7’s 2016 reveal, but comparison is not proof of direct influence. In a 2016 interview, producer Masachika Kawata praised P.T. as an excellent demonstration or game while discussing how it differed from Resident Evil 7. GameSpot’s interview report documents that discussion.

Availability: what the two labels mean for players
P.T.’s delisting and the limits of what can be claimed
According to the 2026 PC Gamer retrospective, P.T. was delisted from PlayStation Network in early 2015 after Silent Hills was canceled. That does not establish that every original copy is inaccessible, nor does it turn unofficial ports, recreations or emulation into an official current release. A current official storefront listing or a complete account of legitimate access methods is not established here.
If you see a modern recreation described as P.T., check what it actually is. A fan project or technical recreation may imitate the concept, but it should not be presented as the original official teaser.

Resident Evil 7 is the full released game in this comparison. Platform editions, regional listings and included content can change, so verify the current store page for the system and region you use before purchasing or installing. The important distinction is not a particular price or edition name: it is that Resident Evil 7 is available as a complete survival-horror product, while P.T. was a teaser tied to a canceled project and later delisted.

Common misconceptions to avoid
“P.T. was the first chapter of Resident Evil 7”
No. P.T. was a teaser for the planned Silent Hills, while Resident Evil 7 is a separate Capcom survival-horror game. Similar presentation does not make them one project.
“Resident Evil 7 is just P.T. expanded”
No. Resident Evil 7 shares a first-person horror vocabulary with P.T., but its complete structure adds exploration, combat and survival systems. The recurring-space interpretation that defines P.T. is not the same design as a full campaign.
“Capcom confirmed that P.T. directly inspired it”
The available interview material does not say that. It shows that P.T. was discussed and praised by producer Masachika Kawata. That supports a comparison and an appreciation, not a proven causal influence.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems“The first-person camera tells you the games play the same way”
Camera position is only one design layer. P.T. uses first person to make a familiar loop feel intimate and unreliable. Resident Evil 7 uses first person to place the player inside a larger survival-horror framework. The same viewpoint serves different gameplay goals.
Bottom line
P.T. and Resident Evil 7 meet at the level of atmosphere: both use first-person closeness and realistic domestic horror to unsettle the player. Their actual play is different. P.T. is a compact, puzzle-like teaser about revisiting one space and interpreting its changes. Resident Evil 7 is a complete survival-horror game in which horror and exploration support a broader journey with combat and survival systems. The resemblance made the comparison inevitable, but the evidence available today does not prove that P.T. directly inspired Resident Evil 7.
