Short answer: the current “P.T. PC port” is a fan-made native PC project, not an official Konami release and not a conventional remake. Its README says the game logic was rebuilt in C++, a Vulkan renderer runs the program, and the levels, models, textures, sounds, scripts and cutscenes are loaded from the player’s own copy of the 2014 PS4 teaser. The project aims to preserve the original behavior while adding optional PC features such as mouse-and-keyboard controls, graphics settings, photo mode and mod support.
That makes it fundamentally different from older PC recreations that rebuilt P.T. approximately with newly authored code and assets. It also means you cannot install the port by itself: you need compatible game data from your own PS4 copy, and support can vary by operating system, hardware and regional release.

The three things people call “the P.T. PC version”
Comparisons become confusing when three separate products are treated as one. “P.T.” originally means the 2014 PlayStation 4 playable teaser associated with Silent Hills. “The P.T. PC port” now generally means the fan project documented in the PT-PC repository. Older projects called “P.T. for PC” were usually recreations that imitated the hallway, puzzles and atmosphere without running the original game data.

- Original PS4 demo: Konami’s PlayStation Store teaser, running on PlayStation 4 hardware with the original console code and assets.
- Current native PC project: a C++ reimplementation of the game logic and a PC renderer that reads data supplied by the user from a PS4 copy.
- Earlier recreations: independent remakes or tributes that recreated selected scenes and mechanics rather than porting the original data and behavior.
The rest of this comparison uses those labels so that a feature added by the PC project is not mistaken for something present in Konami’s 2014 demo.

What the original PS4 demo was—and why it disappeared
P.T. was distributed through the PlayStation Store as a playable teaser for a planned project associated with Hideo Kojima, Guillermo del Toro and Norman Reedus. A notice on the official P.T. website, reported by Game Informer on April 25, 2015, said the distribution period would expire on Wednesday, April 29, 2015.
On May 6, 2015, Game Informer reported Konami’s confirmation that the teaser had been removed from the PlayStation Store. The representative also said the associated project had been cancelled. Those reports establish the historical Store delisting; they do not establish a universal way to redownload the demo on every current console or account.
The PS4 demo is therefore a fixed console reference point: its original controls, display options, microphone interaction and rendering behavior are the baseline the PC project says it is trying to reproduce.
Is the PC project a port, an emulator or a remake?
According to its README, PT-PC is “a native PC port of P.T., the 2014 PS4 teaser by Kojima Productions.” It is not an emulator. The project rebuilds game logic in C++ and uses a Vulkan renderer instead of executing the PS4 binary inside a virtual console.
It is also not a self-contained remake. The README says the port reads the game’s levels, models, textures, sounds, scripts and cutscenes at runtime from the user’s copy of the PS4 game. Neither the repository nor its installer includes those game files. In practical terms, the project supplies executable code and PC-side systems; the player supplies the original content data.
This distinction explains why the port can be closer to the PS4 demo than a typical fan remake while still offering PC-only options. A recreation has to reinterpret the assets and behavior. PT-PC instead claims to preserve the original data and reproduce the code-driven behavior around it.
The project also includes an ownership disclaimer: P.T. is the work of Kojima Productions and is owned by Konami, and the fan project says it is not affiliated with, endorsed by or connected to either organization. There is no official Konami PC release identified in the material available for this comparison.

Core differences at a glance
| Comparison point | Original PS4 demo | Documented native PC project | Older PC recreations |
|---|---|---|---|
| Code execution | Original PS4 build on PlayStation 4 | Game logic rebuilt in C++; native PC executable with a Vulkan renderer | New code written to imitate selected mechanics or scenes |
| Game data | Original data packaged with the PS4 installation | Reads levels, models, textures, sounds, scripts and cutscenes from the user’s PS4 copy; no game data included in the installer | Usually recreated or substituted assets; the exact approach differs by project |
| Default behavior | Original console behavior and presentation | Project documentation says original behavior is the baseline and enhancements are off or set to original behavior by default | Varies; fidelity depends on what each recreation implemented |
| Input | DualShock 4 controls and the original microphone-triggered interaction | Mouse and keyboard plus gamepads; a keyboard key or controller trigger can be assigned for the documented voice interaction | Depends on the recreation |
| Display and graphics | PS4 display settings and console rendering | Selectable display modes and resolution, V-sync, multiple upscalers and additional graphics settings | Depends on the recreation and its engine |
| Extra modes | No PC photo mode, free camera, loop browser or museum documented for the original demo | Photo mode, free camera, loop browser, museum, extra languages and mod support are listed; availability can be platform- or hardware-dependent | May include custom features, but there is no common feature set |
| Platform | PlayStation 4 | Windows and Linux paths are documented; macOS packages are also described | Project-specific |
What the PC port adds without changing the default experience
The README presents the additions as optional. Enhancements are described as disabled or configured to match the original behavior by default, so installing the project does not automatically mean playing a radically altered version.
Resolution, display and rendering controls
The PC build lists selectable display modes and resolution, V-sync and several upscalers. It also exposes graphics settings that are not available as a general-purpose menu in the PS4 demo. These controls let a player fit the game to a modern monitor or adjust performance, but the documentation does not guarantee that every option is available on every graphics card or operating system.
Photo mode and free camera
Photo mode and a free-camera mode are exploration and capture tools added by the project. They are not part of the original PS4 demo’s documented play loop. Use them when you want to inspect a scene or create an image; leave them unused if you want a straightforward first playthrough.
Loop browser and museum
The project lists a loop browser and a museum. These are convenience and archival features for examining the game’s repeating structure and content. They should be understood as PC-project additions rather than recovered menus from the original release.

Languages and mods
Extra languages and mod support are also listed. Because mods can alter assets or behavior, a modded installation should not be treated as a one-to-one reference for the unmodified PS4 demo. Keep a clean data copy if fidelity matters.
Controls: keyboard, mouse, gamepad and the microphone sequence
The original teaser was designed around a PlayStation controller and included a voice-triggered interaction. The PC project documents mouse-and-keyboard support as well as gamepads, allowing you to choose the control style that suits your hardware.
Most importantly for players without a microphone, the README says the relevant interaction can be assigned to a keyboard key or controller triggers. A microphone is therefore not an unavoidable accessory according to the project documentation. The exact binding process and available trigger choices can change with project updates, so use the control screen or current README for the build you install.

Controller support is optional rather than required. A generic PC-compatible gamepad may provide a more console-like feel, but the source material does not establish a particular model or guarantee that every controller maps identically.

Windows, Linux and macOS
The project documents Windows and Linux setup paths and also describes macOS packages. Requirements and feature availability differ by platform. The Vulkan renderer means the computer needs a compatible Vulkan-capable graphics stack; the README’s platform-specific instructions should take precedence over a generic assumption about drivers or performance.
US, European and Japanese releases
The README identifies the US release as the game data used for testing. It says European and Japanese releases can install with a note that the developer has not seen their data. That is a compatibility warning, not proof that every non-US dump fails. If you use a European or Japanese copy, expect to verify the result yourself and keep the original files unchanged for troubleshooting.
Why no universal hardware promise is possible
The project documentation describes builds and features, but the available material does not provide a complete hardware matrix, frame-rate benchmark or independent compatibility test. Performance and feature support can vary with the GPU, Vulkan driver, monitor configuration and operating system. Treat “supports Windows,” “supports Linux” or “has macOS packages” as project documentation rather than a guarantee for every machine.
How to approach installation safely
The exact filenames and menu labels can change as the repository is updated, but the documented workflow has a consistent shape:
- Obtain a legitimate copy of the PS4 game data you are entitled to use. The PC project does not include P.T.’s levels, models, textures, sounds, scripts or cutscenes.
- Choose the build for your operating system. The project describes Windows and Linux paths and macOS packages; read the current instructions for your platform rather than copying commands from an older guide.
- Install the port without mixing in unrelated recreation files. The executable and renderer come from the project, while the game data remains your own source material.
- Point the program to the required data location. Follow the repository’s current path or first-run prompt. Do not rename or modify files unless the instructions explicitly require it.
- Confirm the renderer and input devices. Check that Vulkan initializes, select a display mode, and verify either keyboard-and-mouse or gamepad input before starting a long session.
- Set optional features deliberately. Leave enhancements at their original-behavior defaults for a baseline comparison; enable photo mode, free camera, upscaling or other options only when you want them.
- Assign the voice interaction if needed. If you do not have a microphone, bind the documented keyboard key or controller trigger alternative in the control settings.
Because the installer contains no game data, an installation that launches to a missing-file message is usually a data-location or compatibility issue, not evidence that the project is an empty shell.
How close is it to the PS4 demo?
The project’s stated goal is to preserve the original experience, and its use of the original data gives that claim a different basis from a remake that recreates the scene from scratch. The project’s creator, Lorean Xavier, told PC Gamer on October 8, 2026: “I wanted to make the version of P.T. that my younger self always wished existed.”

That same PC Gamer report quoted P.T. dataminer Lance McDonald describing the result as, in his assessment, a “1:1 port of the entire codebase” that reproduces undocumented behavior he knows. McDonald’s statement is an attributed expert assessment, not an independently published benchmark or frame-by-frame verification.
No hands-on test, performance measurement or legal review was performed for this comparison. It is therefore accurate to say that the project is designed and documented as a high-fidelity native port, not to promise perfect equivalence on every computer, every regional data set or every future build. Differences can arise from the new renderer, PC timing and input, driver behavior, optional settings, mods and platform-specific limitations even when the underlying game data is original.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsHow it differs from older PC recreations
Earlier fan projects generally had to recreate the corridor, lighting, puzzles, enemy events and camera behavior in another engine. Such projects can be useful tributes, but they are not the same technical category as a port that loads the original PS4 data. A recreation may change a texture, omit an undocumented trigger, simplify a transition or reinterpret the sound mix without intending to do so.
The native project’s important distinction is not simply that it “looks better.” It claims to rebuild the game logic and retain the original content files, then adds PC systems around that foundation. If your priority is the closest documented approximation of the PS4 teaser, that architecture is more relevant than a recreation’s marketing description. If your priority is a standalone download that needs no PS4 data, a recreation may be easier to start, but it should not be labeled the original P.T. or treated as equivalent.
Common problems and what they usually mean
The program says game data is missing
Check that you supplied the required files from your own PS4 copy and that the path matches the current project instructions. Since the installer does not contain the assets, reinstalling the executable alone will not provide them.
The game starts but graphics are wrong or it crashes
Verify Vulkan support and update the graphics driver appropriate to your operating system. Test the original-behavior graphics settings first, then add upscaling or other enhancements one at a time. This isolates a renderer or hardware issue from a data problem.
A European or Japanese copy does not behave as expected
The project documentation says the US release was tested and that the developer has not seen the European and Japanese data. Record the region, use an unmodified copy and consult the project’s current compatibility notes before assuming the port itself is broken.

The microphone event does not trigger
Use the documented keyboard-key or controller-trigger alternative, confirm the binding was saved, and test with the microphone disabled if you are intentionally using the non-microphone path. Input labels can differ by operating system and build.
A modded installation no longer matches the demo
Disable mods and restore the original data when comparing behavior with the PS4 version. Mods are an explicit extension point, so altered scripts or assets can create differences that are not defects in the unmodified port.
Which version should you choose?
- Choose the original PS4 demo if you already have access to that console installation and want the historically released control and rendering environment.
- Choose the native PC project if you have compatible PS4 game data and want keyboard-and-mouse input, modern display controls, a Vulkan renderer or optional inspection and mod features while retaining the project’s original-behavior defaults.
- Consider a recreation only as a separate fan interpretation if you need a self-contained PC experience or want a project that does not depend on PS4 data. Do not assume it reproduces every original trigger, asset or undocumented behavior.
There is no generic PC disc or official Konami download identified here that substitutes for the required game data. The practical requirement for the native project is your own compatible PS4 files, plus a computer and operating-system setup supported by the project documentation.
