Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchIf the P.T. PC port crashes on startup or opens to a black screen, first identify which project you installed. The current P.T. PC Port is a native C++ application with a Vulkan renderer; older fan recreations use Unreal Engine and have different files, settings and logs. There is no single black-screen fix. Match the steps below to your project, operating system, GPU, game-data source and exact failure point before changing settings.
Which P.T. PC project did you install?
Open the folder you downloaded and check its project name, documentation and executable. The current project’s README describes it as “a native PC port of P.T., the 2014 PS4 teaser by Kojima Productions.” You can verify that description in the P.T. PC Port README. It uses a Vulkan renderer and is not an Unreal Engine remake.

That distinction determines almost every useful next step. A native Vulkan application can fail while creating a graphics device, loading the port’s data archives or applying a display setting. An Unreal Engine recreation has its own engine version, configuration files, shader cache and log conventions. A fix for one project can be irrelevant, or actively confusing, for the other.

Signs that you have the current native port
- The project identifies itself as P.T. PC Port and documents a native C++ implementation.
- Its graphics requirement is Vulkan 1.3 rather than an Unreal Engine version.
- Its Windows or Linux data folder is named
databeside the executable. - The documentation refers to a port version and release notes rather than an Unreal project or packaged game build.
Signs that you have an Unreal Engine fan recreation
An older recreation may mention Unreal Engine in its readme, installer or project files. Treat it as a separate application: its engine version, configuration locations and log names will differ. Do not copy the native port’s data/ paths or its 1.0.1 release note into an Unreal project. For general Unreal graphics troubleshooting, Epic’s guide explains possible causes and evidence to collect, but it is not a diagnosis of this Vulkan port: Dealing with a GPU Crash When Using Unreal Engine.

If you are unsure, write down the exact executable name, the folder name and the URL from which you obtained the project. Those three details are more useful than describing it simply as “the P.T. remake,” because several unrelated projects use that description.
P.T. PC port crashes on startup: check the version first
Open the project’s release page and compare your installed build with the current suitable release. Version-specific fixes only apply when your symptom and settings match the release note. Record the version before changing settings so you can tell whether an update changed the behavior.
The documented 1.0.1 startup-close fix
The 1.0.1 release, dated October 7, 2026, states: “Fixes the game closing at start with DLSS Frame Generation in borderless fullscreen.” If your copy closes immediately and you are using both DLSS Frame Generation and borderless fullscreen, update to a release containing that fix.
If you cannot update yet, use either change only as a diagnostic: disable DLSS Frame Generation, or switch from borderless fullscreen to another display mode. If the application then starts, keep the change until you install the fixed release. Re-enable the option only after confirming that the newer build handles it. The note does not claim to fix unrelated black screens, crashes during gameplay, or failures on other display configurations.
Do not infer that any startup close is a 1.0.1 case. The documented condition contains three parts: the port is closing at start, DLSS Frame Generation is enabled, and the window is in borderless fullscreen. If one part is absent, treat the release note as an adjacent clue rather than an explanation. Save a copy of the failed log before updating when possible; it gives you a useful comparison if the behavior changes.
Does your computer meet the native port’s requirements?
Before replacing hardware, compare your operating system and GPU driver with the requirements published in the README. The project requires a GPU and driver that support Vulkan 1.3. Meeting the requirement does not guarantee that every optional feature will run, but failing it makes graphics initialization an unlikely place to expect a software-only workaround.
| Platform | Published requirement |
|---|---|
| Windows | Windows 10 or Windows 11, x64 |
| Linux | x86-64 with glibc 2.38 or newer |
| macOS | macOS 14 or newer |
| Graphics | GPU and installed driver supporting Vulkan 1.3 |
Verify Vulkan support and the driver
- Identify the exact GPU model in your operating system’s hardware information. “A gaming PC” or “integrated graphics” is not specific enough to establish Vulkan 1.3 support.
- Check the GPU manufacturer’s current driver documentation for Vulkan 1.3 support on your operating system. Check the driver actually selected by the system, not only a driver package saved on disk.
- Install a driver update only when the vendor lists your GPU and operating system as supported, then restart the computer.
- Launch the port again and record whether the failure occurs before a window appears, when rendering begins, or after a save is selected.
If you have more than one graphics adapter, note which one the application chooses. A laptop may have an integrated adapter and a discrete GPU, and the Vulkan-capable device can matter. Do not assume that moving the executable to another folder will change device selection; use the project’s documented settings and your operating system’s supported graphics controls instead.
A graphics card with Vulkan 1.3 support is a compatibility requirement, not a guarantee that every visual option will work. Optional ray-traced features have additional capability requirements. If you can reach the settings menu, turn optional ray-traced effects off temporarily; this separates a feature-capability problem from a basic launch problem. If you cannot reach the menu, record that fact rather than claiming that ray tracing caused the failure.

Buying a new graphics card is therefore a last-resort compatibility decision, not a universal black-screen fix. First establish the present GPU model, driver and Vulkan capability. A replacement has a cost and may leave a data-loading or release-specific problem unchanged.
Is the game data valid?
The native port reads files from the player’s own P.T. copy. The project says it is built and tested with the US release identified as CUSA01127, supplied either as a dump folder or a fake PKG. A retail store PKG cannot be used because it is encrypted for the console that owns it. The README documents these limitations at github.com/LoreanXavier/pt-pc.
Check the source you selected
- Confirm that the selected source is the supported dump-folder or fake-PKG form, not an encrypted retail-store PKG.
- Confirm that it is the tested US release, CUSA01127, if you are troubleshooting against the project’s documented setup.
- Recheck that the required archive files are present and readable in the location you configured.
- Check for a path typo, moved folder or inaccessible drive. A path that worked when the port was first configured can fail after a drive letter or mount point changes.
- Do not download or share copyrighted game data; use only a copy you are legally entitled to use.
Invalid or incomplete data can produce a launch failure or a window that never renders. Do not assume a Vulkan error when the log instead reports a missing archive, unreadable path or data-loading failure. Conversely, do not replace valid archives merely because the screen is black before any data-loading message appears; establish the failure stage first.
When checking files, change one thing at a time. Note the original configured location, then verify the source and relaunch. If the same data works in one build but not another, record both versions and preserve the logs instead of repeatedly moving or renaming the files.
Where is the P.T. PC Port crash log?
For the current native port, settings, logs and crash dumps are stored under the application’s data location. The exact path depends on the operating system.
| Operating system | Location documented by the project |
|---|---|
| Windows | data/ beside the executable |
| Linux | data/ beside the executable |
| macOS | ~/Library/Application Support/pt-port/pt/ |
Preserve useful evidence
- Close the game after reproducing the problem once, so the latest log and crash dump are complete.
- Copy the newest
pt.logand any newly created crash dump before trying more changes. - Write down the port version, operating system version, GPU model, driver version and whether you use fullscreen, borderless fullscreen, DLSS Frame Generation or ray-traced effects.
- Record the exact sequence: for example, “window appears black, then closes,” “process exits before a window,” or “black screen after selecting Continue.”
- Keep the original files unchanged and make a separate copy of any excerpt you share in an issue report.
A log line is evidence to interpret, not proof of a cause by itself. A graphics initialization error points toward Vulkan, driver or feature compatibility; a missing-file message points toward game data; a platform or library error points toward the operating system environment. Include the lines immediately before the failure as well as the final error, because the last line can merely report the consequence.
If no log is created, say so explicitly in a report. That observation distinguishes “the process exits before logging starts” from “a log exists but contains a rendering failure.” Do not substitute a screenshot for the log when a text log and crash dump are available; a screenshot shows the symptom but not the initialization sequence.

P.T. PC port opens to a black screen: use symptom-led checks
Black screen appears immediately, with no menu
- Confirm that the GPU and driver meet Vulkan 1.3 support.
- Check the log for graphics-device initialization errors before changing unrelated settings.
- If the port previously worked and you enabled an optional ray-traced feature, disable that feature by editing the in-game settings when possible, then relaunch.
- Check whether the installed release has a note matching your display configuration, especially the 1.0.1 DLSS Frame Generation and borderless-fullscreen fix.
- Note whether the window is visible, whether it responds to input and whether audio continues. These observations help separate a rendering failure from a complete process exit, but they do not identify a cause without the log.
The window is black and then the process closes
- Test without DLSS Frame Generation in borderless fullscreen if that is your configuration.
- Install the release containing the documented 1.0.1 fix.
- Capture the log and crash dump from the same failed launch; do not infer that every close is the DLSS issue.
- Compare one controlled launch with the changed setting and one with the original setting. Restore the original configuration after testing if you need to reproduce the report accurately.
The game reaches a menu but goes black after loading
- Check the game-data path and archive files first, because this stage may be when content is opened.
- Temporarily turn off optional visual effects you recently enabled.
- Compare the log from a failed launch with one from a launch that reaches the menu, if you have both.
- Record the exact menu action that precedes the black screen, such as selecting Continue or starting a new sequence. “Black after loading” is more actionable than “black screen sometimes.”
The problem starts only after changing a setting
Undo the last graphics or display change rather than changing several options at once. Borderless fullscreen combined with DLSS Frame Generation is the one configuration with a specific startup-close fix documented in the 1.0.1 notes. Other combinations require log-based investigation. Keep a short list of each setting and result so you do not lose the working combination.

General GPU triage when the log is inconclusive
Epic’s Unreal Engine guidance lists several broad sources of GPU crashes: content or engine defects, drivers, hardware problems, exhausted video memory and conflicts with other applications. Those categories are useful for cautious triage, but that page concerns Unreal Engine and does not establish the cause of a Vulkan-port failure.
- Read the port log around the first graphics error, not only the final “crashed” line.
- Check the GPU vendor’s driver page for a supported update.
- Close other graphics-intensive applications, overlays and capture tools for one controlled test.
- Retry with optional ray-traced or other enhanced visual features disabled.
- Change one variable at a time and note whether the failure moves from startup to gameplay or disappears.
Use this as controlled triage, not as a list of guaranteed cures. Closing another application can reveal a resource conflict, but a successful test does not prove which application was responsible. Likewise, disabling an optional effect can show that the feature path matters without proving that the GPU is defective.
Do not treat a driver update, a cleaner utility or a new graphics card as a universal remedy. First establish that the current GPU cannot provide Vulkan 1.3 or that the log identifies a reproducible hardware or driver fault. The project documentation does not provide a measured success rate for any of these generic steps.

Compare possible fixes on five axes: which project and engine you installed; whether the platform and GPU meet the requirements; whether a release note matches the exact configuration; whether the failure occurs at launch, after a graphics option or during loading; and whether the log identifies graphics, data-loading or platform behavior. This order prevents a data-loading problem from being treated as a GPU problem and prevents an Unreal recreation from being treated as the native Vulkan port.
How to report an unresolved crash
Use the project’s issue tracker for unresolved native-port cases. The tracker includes a Linux startup report, but the listing alone does not establish a general Linux fix or identify a cause for every distribution, driver or GPU.
Include:
- Port version and the release page entry you installed.
- Operating system and architecture.
- GPU model and driver version.
- Whether the source is the documented US CUSA01127 dump folder or fake PKG.
- Display mode and graphics options, including DLSS Frame Generation and ray tracing.
- The latest
pt.log, relevant crash dump and a concise reproduction sequence. - Whether the application creates a window, displays a black frame, produces audio, reaches a menu or exits immediately.
Remove personal paths or account information before posting. Do not upload copyrighted game data when a maintainer asks for diagnostic information; provide the log, version and configuration instead. A precise report lets maintainers distinguish a startup regression, unsupported capability, data error and platform-specific defect.
What the project documentation does—and does not—establish
The project documentation establishes the native C++/Vulkan design, supported platform range, Vulkan 1.3 requirement, data-source limitations, log locations and the specific 1.0.1 startup-close fix. It does not publish a universal black-screen cause, a guaranteed workaround for every GPU, or a measured success rate for these steps. Treat each change as a controlled diagnostic and keep the exact setup attached to the result.
FAQ
Why does P.T. PC close when I launch it?
First identify the project and version. If the native port closes at startup while DLSS Frame Generation and borderless fullscreen are both enabled, update to a release containing the 1.0.1 fix. Otherwise, check Vulkan 1.3 support, game-data validity and the latest log; the release note does not cover every startup close.

How do I find the P.T. PC Port crash log?
On Windows and Linux, look under the data/ folder beside the executable. On macOS, the documented location is ~/Library/Application Support/pt-port/pt/. Copy the newest pt.log and any crash dump immediately after reproducing the failure.
Is the current P.T. PC Port an Unreal Engine game?
No. The project README describes a native C++ port with a Vulkan renderer. Unreal Engine fan recreations are separate projects with different requirements, settings and logs.
Can a retail-store PKG be used?
The project says no: a retail-store PKG is encrypted for the console that owns it. The documented tested source is the US CUSA01127 release supplied as a dump folder or fake PKG.

Do I need to buy a new graphics card?
Not automatically. Verify your present GPU and driver’s Vulkan 1.3 support first. Upgrade hardware only if the documented requirement cannot be met; a new card will not correct an invalid data path or an unrelated version-specific bug.
Will disabling ray tracing fix every black screen?
No. Optional ray-traced features have additional capability requirements, so disabling them is a useful comparison when the problem follows that setting. It is not a documented universal fix for launch or data-loading failures.
What if I am on Linux?
Confirm that the system is x86-64 with glibc 2.38 or newer and that the GPU driver supports Vulkan 1.3. The issue tracker contains a Linux startup report, but its listing does not establish one general Linux fix. Include your distribution, driver and log when reporting a case.
What if the screen is black but the game does not crash?
Record whether the window responds and whether audio continues, then inspect the log. Check graphics initialization, display mode and optional effects before replacing data. A black frame alone does not identify whether rendering, data loading or a platform component failed.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsShould I change several settings at once?
No. Change one variable, reproduce the symptom and record the result. This is especially important for borderless fullscreen, DLSS Frame Generation and ray-traced options, because combining changes makes the successful or failed condition impossible to identify.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why does P.T. PC close when I launch it?
Identify the project and version first. For the native port, the documented 1.0.1 fix applies when DLSS Frame Generation and borderless fullscreen are both enabled; otherwise check Vulkan 1.3 support, game data and the latest log.
How do I find the P.T. PC Port crash log?
Windows and Linux store it under data/ beside the executable. macOS uses ~/Library/Application Support/pt-port/pt/. Copy the newest pt.log and any crash dump after reproducing the failure.

No. It is documented as a native C++ port with a Vulkan renderer. Unreal Engine fan recreations are separate projects.
Can I use a retail-store PKG?
No. The project says retail-store PKGs are encrypted for the owning console. Its documented tested source is the US CUSA01127 release as a dump folder or fake PKG.
Do I need a new graphics card?
Only if your current GPU and driver cannot support Vulkan 1.3. Verify compatibility before spending money; hardware replacement will not fix invalid game data or an unrelated software bug.
The Bottom Line
Start by identifying the exact P.T. project, then match its version, operating system, Vulkan capability, game-data source and symptom. For the native port, the only documented startup-specific fix is the 1.0.1 change for DLSS Frame Generation in borderless fullscreen. Preserve the log and crash dump, change one variable at a time, and report unresolved cases with complete machine and configuration details.
