Wegovy is the semaglutide product with a U.S. FDA-labeled indication for chronic weight reduction in qualifying patients. Ozempic also contains semaglutide, but its cited FDA label is for adults with type 2 diabetes and specified cardiovascular and kidney risk reduction—not chronic weight reduction. A clinician may make an individual prescribing decision, including an off-label decision where appropriate, but the two brands are not interchangeable simply because they share an active ingredient.
Ozempic and Wegovy at a glance
Both products are prescription medicines containing semaglutide, a glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist. The decisive difference is not the molecule’s name; it is what each product is approved and labeled to do, for which patients, and in which formulation.

Which one is prescribed for weight loss?
Wegovy has the FDA-labeled weight-reduction indication
Wegovy is indicated, in combination with a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, to reduce excess body weight and maintain that reduction over the long term in specific groups:

- Adults with obesity.
- Children and adolescents aged 12 and older with obesity.
- Adults with overweight plus at least one weight-related medical condition.
The indication is conditional. It does not mean that every person who wants to lose weight is an eligible candidate, and it does not replace assessment by a licensed clinician. The label’s wording specifically pairs the medicine with eating and activity changes.
Ozempic’s cited label does not include chronic weight reduction
Ozempic is labeled for adults with type 2 diabetes to improve glycemic control, alongside diet and exercise. Its cited label also includes particular cardiovascular and kidney risk-reduction indications for people who have type 2 diabetes and the specified underlying conditions. Chronic weight reduction is not listed among those indications.
That distinction answers the title’s practical question: when the treatment goal is an FDA-labeled prescription for chronic weight reduction, Wegovy is the semaglutide brand whose label addresses that goal. A clinician could prescribe a medicine outside its labeled indication when professional judgment and applicable rules support it, but an off-label prescription is not the same as an FDA approval for weight loss. Do not assume that Ozempic is an interchangeable substitute.

Why the same semaglutide does not make the brands interchangeable
Indication is part of a prescription
An FDA indication identifies the condition studied and authorized for a product, the patient population covered and the required treatment context. It also governs how the manufacturer’s prescribing information describes benefits, risks and dosing. Two products can contain the same active ingredient while carrying different indications, presentations, devices and label instructions.
Population and diagnosis matter
Wegovy’s weight indication is built around obesity or overweight with a weight-related condition, with a separate adolescent age threshold. Ozempic’s cited indications begin with a diagnosis of type 2 diabetes and, for some risk-reduction uses, established cardiovascular disease or chronic kidney disease. A person’s body weight alone does not establish that Ozempic is appropriate, and the presence of diabetes does not automatically make Wegovy the correct product.

Presentation and labeling can differ
The labels may describe different devices, strengths, titration schedules and dosage forms even when the active ingredient is identical. The current Wegovy label includes injection and tablet forms, and the FDA announced approval of a 7.2 mg Wegovy HD injection for certain adults on March 19, 2026. Ozempic’s cited label describes a weekly injection beginning at 0.25 mg weekly before escalation. These facts should be read as product-label descriptions, not as a menu from which a patient chooses a dose.
What Wegovy is also approved to treat
Cardiovascular-event risk reduction
Wegovy’s label includes reducing major adverse cardiovascular events in adults with established cardiovascular disease who also have overweight or obesity. This is a separate labeled use from the general weight-reduction indication and applies only to the population described in the label.
Noncirrhotic MASH
The label also includes treatment of noncirrhotic metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH) with moderate-to-advanced fibrosis in adults. MASH and its fibrosis stage require medical evaluation; a person should not infer a diagnosis from weight, liver enzymes or an internet symptom list.
What Ozempic is approved to treat
Blood-sugar control in type 2 diabetes
Ozempic’s FDA-approved core use is to improve glycemic control in adults with type 2 diabetes as an adjunct to diet and exercise. FDA warning-letter language quotes the approved prescribing information: “OZEMPIC is a glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist indicated: as an adjunct to diet and exercise to improve glycemic control in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus.”
Cardiovascular risk in specified patients with diabetes
For adults with type 2 diabetes and established cardiovascular disease, the label includes reducing major adverse cardiovascular events. This is not a general cardiovascular indication for everyone taking Ozempic; both the diabetes diagnosis and the specified cardiovascular history are material.

Kidney and cardiovascular outcomes in diabetes with chronic kidney disease
The cited label also includes reducing specified kidney and cardiovascular outcomes in adults who have type 2 diabetes and chronic kidney disease. Those criteria are different from Wegovy’s cardiovascular indication, which is tied to established cardiovascular disease plus overweight or obesity.
How the weight-loss indication is framed
FDA warning-letter language quotes the Wegovy label as: “WEGOVY is indicated in combination with a reduced calorie diet and increased physical activity.” That wording matters because the medicine is not labeled as a stand-alone replacement for nutrition, activity, monitoring or follow-up.
The indication also describes long-term maintenance of weight reduction. In practice, a clinician considers whether the expected benefit, adverse effects, contraindications, coexisting conditions and ability to continue treatment make sense for a particular patient. The label does not authorize readers to diagnose themselves or start, stop or switch treatment without medical supervision.
Shared safety issues and common adverse reactions
Boxed warning about thyroid C-cell tumors
Both cited labels carry a boxed warning that thyroid C-cell tumors occurred in rodents. Whether semaglutide causes these tumors in humans is unknown. Both products are contraindicated for people with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or with multiple endocrine neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2).
This is a screening question to discuss before treatment, not a diagnosis that can be made from a general thyroid complaint. A clinician should review personal and family history and explain what symptoms or follow-up require attention.

Gastrointestinal effects
Common adverse reactions listed in the labels include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation and abdominal pain. Exact frequencies vary by the studied population, formulation and dose. A short list cannot describe the complete risk profile, contraindications, warnings or interactions; use the current prescribing information and the advice of the treating clinician for that detail.
Why dose escalation should not be improvised
Ozempic’s cited label starts at 0.25 mg weekly before escalation, while Wegovy’s current labeling includes multiple formulations and the newly announced 7.2 mg Wegovy HD injection for certain adults. Strengths and schedules are product-specific. Do not combine products, substitute one pen for another, or increase a dose because a friend or online post describes a different schedule.
Compounded semaglutide is not the same as either FDA-approved product
FDA warns that unapproved compounded semaglutide products do not undergo FDA review for safety, effectiveness and quality before marketing. The agency has also described dosing-error concerns. A compounded product should therefore be identified clearly as different from FDA-approved Ozempic or Wegovy; the existence of semaglutide as an ingredient does not establish equivalent quality, concentration, device or clinical evidence.
Anyone offered a compounded product should ask which pharmacy prepared it, what concentration and instructions apply, how it will be measured and who will monitor treatment. Those questions do not turn an unapproved product into an FDA-approved one, but they can reveal avoidable dosing confusion. Discuss the option with a licensed clinician and pharmacist rather than relying on a social-media label or a vial that resembles an approved package.

- State the treatment goal. Say whether the priority is weight reduction, blood-sugar control, cardiovascular-risk reduction, kidney-risk reduction or evaluation of a liver condition.
- Review the qualifying diagnosis. Bring records of type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, chronic kidney disease, obesity, overweight and related conditions. The diagnosis determines which label, if any, fits.
- Provide medication and family-history details. Include every prescription, over-the-counter medicine and supplement, and disclose any personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or MEN 2.
- Confirm the exact product and presentation. Ask whether the prescription is Wegovy or Ozempic, injection or tablet where applicable, the labeled strength, and the written instructions. Do not rely on a verbal brand nickname.
- Plan monitoring and follow-up. Establish how side effects, glucose or other condition-specific measures will be monitored and whom to contact if vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, abdominal pain or another concerning reaction occurs.
Common misunderstandings
“They are the same drug.”
They contain the same active ingredient, but the brands are not the same prescription. Indications, patient criteria, formulations, strengths and label language can differ.

“Ozempic is FDA-approved for weight loss.”
The cited Ozempic label does not list chronic weight reduction. Wegovy is the product in this comparison with an FDA-labeled chronic weight-reduction indication for qualifying patients.
“Wegovy is only for people without diabetes.”
The weight indication is based on the qualifying weight-related criteria, not a blanket rule that excludes everyone with diabetes. A clinician must decide which product and indication fit the individual’s complete medical picture.
“A higher labeled dose is automatically better.”
A labeled strength is not a personal target. The FDA’s March 19, 2026 announcement of 7.2 mg Wegovy HD describes an approved option for certain adults, not permission for every patient to request or use that dose.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Bottom line for the weight-loss question
For an FDA-labeled prescription intended to reduce and maintain body weight, Wegovy is the relevant semaglutide product for qualifying adults and adolescents aged 12 and older, used with reduced-calorie eating and increased activity. Ozempic is labeled for type 2 diabetes and specified cardiovascular and kidney risk reduction, and its cited label does not include chronic weight reduction. Because both medicines carry important warnings and product-specific instructions, the appropriate choice—and whether either medicine is appropriate—belongs to a clinician who can apply the current U.S. label to the patient’s diagnosis and history.
