Some people taking GLP-1 medicines report brittle nails or nails that grow more slowly. The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) connects these changes with significant weight loss; the available evidence does not establish that Ozempic itself directly causes nail trouble.
What nail changes have people reported?
The AAD says people taking GLP-1 medicines have reported slower nail growth and brittle nails. Its guidance links these changes to significant weight loss, rather than establishing a direct effect of a particular medicine.
That distinction matters: a symptom that occurs while someone is taking a medicine is not, by itself, proof that the medicine caused it. The sources reviewed do not provide a clinical incidence estimate for nail changes, so there is no supported percentage for how often they occur among Ozempic users.
Can Ozempic make your nails brittle?
It is possible to notice brittle nails while taking Ozempic, but the evidence described by the AAD does not show that Ozempic directly causes them. The guidance identifies significant weight loss as a possible explanation for reported nail changes. It does not settle whether nail changes can also result from a direct drug effect.

For hair loss, the evidence is more developed than it is for nails: the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) reports that Ozempic labeling was updated to include alopecia between December 2024 and May 2025. A labeling update documents a recognized adverse reaction; it does not prove the medicine is the cause of every person’s hair loss.
What might explain hair loss during GLP-1 treatment?
The AAD says dermatologists believe sudden weight loss may explain hair loss for some people taking weight-loss medicines. Reduced food intake may also leave some people short of protein, vitamins, or other nutrients. The AAD notes that a direct effect of the medicine on hair is another possibility, but says more information is needed to determine why people experience hair loss.

These are rates reported in WEGOVY weight-management trials, according to current U.S. prescribing information accessed in 2026. WEGOVY and Ozempic both contain semaglutide, but differ in their indications and treatment contexts. The WEGOVY trial rates should not be presented as estimates for Ozempic users.

What to do if you notice hair loss or nail changes
- Discuss hair loss with a dermatologist or prescribing clinician. The AAD recommends working with a dermatologist to identify the type of hair loss and discuss GLP-1 treatment and monitoring.
- Ask about nutrition and changes in food intake. The AAD notes that reduced intake may leave some people short of protein, vitamins, or other nutrients. A clinician can help assess individual needs.
- Do not stop or change a prescribed GLP-1 medicine without medical guidance. Talk with the prescriber about symptoms and treatment options.
- Be cautious about supplements. The AAD gives general guidance recommending a standard multivitamin for people taking a GLP-1. The available evidence here does not show that a multivitamin prevents or treats GLP-1-associated hair loss or nail changes; seek individual advice from a clinician.
